E5164 : COMPUTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS Lab No: 5 TITLE : POWER SUPPLY AND CABLE CONNECTION

OBJECTIVE: From the practical, students would be able to;

1. Identify the voltage on each colour-coded wire.


MATERIAL REQUIRED: 1. A computer set. 2. Multimeter 3. Computer tool-kit. 4. Screwdriver. INTRODUCTION A computer power supply unit (Computer PSU) is the component that supplies power to a computer. More specifically, a power supply is typically designed to convert 100-120 V (North America and Japan) or 220-240 V (Europe, Asia and Australia) AC power from the mains to usable low-voltage DC power for the internal components of the computer. Some power supplies have a switch to change between 230 V and 115 V. Other models have automatic sensors that switch input voltage automatically, or are able to accept any voltage between those limits. WORK STEP:

1. Turn the computer OFF. 2. Disconnect the power cord cable before open the computer casing. 3. Open power supply case and identify internal parts as transformer, rectifier, filter and
regulator. 4. Draw power supply block diagram.

5. By using multimeter test voltage on each colour coded wire. Touch your multimeter
black probe to black wire and red probe on each colour-coded wire as below. Fill up your answer on table given. 6. Check disk drive supply by using multimeter and test voltage to on each color-coded

7. Check Floppy disk drive connector and determine which one is pin no 1. Why there
are twists part on FDD wire?

8. Check hard disk drive connector and determine which one is pin no 1. ________ 9. Check COM1 and COM2 port and determine the total number of COM port pin.

10. Check LPT1 wire. Number of wire is ____________. 11. Touch your multimeter black probe to black wire and red probe to green wire on
power connection to motherboard. By using two jumpers (touch one jumper to black wire and another one to green wire on power connection to motherboard). Then touch both jumpers to each other.
