B.A.

(Hons) Visual Communication

Module: Investigation & Practice I

Module Code: 202-860-05 (20 credits)

Lecturer/s: Katherine Szeto + Marta Kusztra

Cross-Site Project Brief: Hybrid

Introduction: A hybrid is an offspring of two animals or plants of different

species or varieties; it is a thing or a word composed of
incongruous elements.

All disciplines have structural patterns of thinking that can be

borrowed and combined with graphic design disciplines and
concepts.

What is the hybrid if the indexing system of the street finder of

Shanghai / Beijing / Singapore is combined with a novel?

What if the editorial content of a newspaper met 48 face-up

OMO washing detergent packets?

What would happen if typography collided with genetics?

What would be the result if chemical formulae combined with

poetry?

What would occur if grammar met electric circuit diagrams?

Learning Outcomes:
A6 Comprehend and analyse a range of examples of visual
communication that reflect a variety of sources and
applications.

D1 Apply a higher level of independence in resolving a

design problem.

D4 Resolve creative, technical and structural constraints in

relation to design process.

Brief: The purpose of this module is to consolidate, reinforce and

develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of your
chosen specialist area of Visual Communication.

You are required to prepare a proposal that outlines your hybrid

and your means of investigating and exploring this hybrid.

You should select an area of graphic design that you are

interested in, for example, signage, packaging design,
editorial, typography, identity systems, display graphics or
corporate identity. You are then required to construct a hybrid
that combines with this area of graphic design.
The emphasis of your investigation should be on exploring
different patterns of structural thinking.

Work Required: A proposal that reflects the hybrid identified
