Evaluation

Technical Presentations/ Bonus Mark

Additional evaluation scheme: Each graduate student should select one of the following options and present his/her work at the end of the term. The presentation (15-20 min) will include 25% of his/her final mark. Undergraduate students may opt to do the same and it will be considered as a 10% worth bonus project. Option 1: With the help of your supervisor, define a mini-project related to your research field and apply some of the methodologies you learned in this course to improve your system/design/material/etc. Option 2: With the help of the course instructor, choose a relevant book chapter or technical paper from the literature and present it in the class. Multidisciplinary design case studies will be given priority.

Attendance and course mechanism

Students are expected to attend all lecture and lab sessions and hand in the assignments/projects on time. Given that there will be a significant amount of material to cover, you should make every effort not to miss any lecture, unless you have an acceptable reason and notify the instructor ahead of time. There will be a series of assignments that need computational tools (preferably Excel, Matlab, or C-programming). You should start working on your assignments ahead of time and during the lab sessions you can resolve your problems with your TA, before submitting each assignment. In the lab sessions, the TA will review some Excel skills that you may need for this course. To facilitate class discussions, a few videos/interview clips from different aspects of decision making in real life situations will be presented.

Main learning objectives

- Study how to conduct experiments effectively and efficiently - Evaluate alternatives in your material/product/process design - Obtain a knowledge of the optimization of engineering systems - Make successful decisions in multiple criteria domains - Be able to perform parameter estimation and basic statistical analyses - Learn about more advanced topics in the DOE and MADM fields

Classroom Policy No Laptops are allowed in the classroom unless it is absolutely necessary for taking notes. A laptop loses value in the learning environment if it becomes a distraction. Also you should pay utmost attention not to disturb your colleagues during lectures. Students who do not follow this policy will be kindly asked to leave the classroom.
