recording minus your voice part. A copy of this CD is available to all choral directors and can be
easily duplicated for your use in preparing for this audition. The CD will indicate the tonic pitch of
Gb, will pause briefly to enable you to establish your starting pitch, and will begin by saying “3, 4,
Sing..”

x Judging for the Silver Swan is based on Quality, Intonation and Musicianship.

6. Tonal Memory
Tonal Memory exercises are four measures long and are pre-recorded on a CD. When you enter the Tonal
Memory room, you will be directed to a music stand upon which will be a Tonal Memory Exercise sheet.
The Room Chairperson will indicate which exercise you will hear. You will hear the exercise twice and
then you must sing it back on the syllable “LA” or Solfege. You will NOT hear the starting pitch again.
BEGIN SINGING AS SOON AS THE SECOND EXERCISE HAS FINISHED!

STUDENT AUDITION INFORMATION

REGISTRATION:
x Every school is assigned a registration time. If you arrive early to the audition site, please proceed to the warm-up
room, NOT the registration table. Shortly before your assigned time, your SCHOOL NAME will be called by the
staff at the registration table. All students who are present from your school should then approach the table IN
ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY LAST NAME for speedy service at registration.
x At Registration, you will receive your two-part (Bass/Tenor) or three-part (Soprano/Alto) Registration Card. Do
not lose this card. Your audition number has already been recorded in a database which will then record the scores
you receive for the day. NOTE: If for any reason you decide NOT to complete any part of your audition, you
MUST return the unused portion of your card to the Registration Table. Please do NOT leave the building
without completing all parts of your audition or turning in your Registration Card!

the lobby or cafeteria or connect with them via cell phone.
WARM-UP ROOMS:
x Proceed to the warm-up room.
FINAL ROOMS:
x Final Rooms will proceed as indicated on the STUDENT AUDITION INFORMATION Sheet.

ƒ YOU must ask to replay the pitch and the judge will state, “Second and Final Time”. No judge
will initiate the repeat of any of the scales.
x You do not drop the proper octave?
ƒ If you realize your mistake after a few notes ask to repeat the scale. The judge will replay the
pitch and state “Second and Final Time”.
x You think you received a wrong pitch from a judge?
ƒ Ask the judge to replay the pitch and clarify the pitch he/she is playing. If you still have a
concern, ask the monitor to walk over and check that the judge is playing the proper pitch.
x You sing a nine-note ascending chromatic scale?
ƒ It’s wrong and the scoring will reflect that lack of preparation.
x You lose your concentration in the solo?
ƒ You may ask and the judge will replay the starting pitch and state, “Second and Final Time”.
You should be PREPARED for these auditions!
x You lose your concentration in the Silver Swan?
ƒ There are no second chances. You must try and recover at the next phrase.
