Perform an upgrade, if eligible. The Windows Vista installation program will automatically transfer your settings, documents and applications by selecting "Upgrade" during the installation process. If you must perform a clean install, proceed to Step 2. 2 Create a new folder on your desktop by right-clicking on it and selecting "New Folder." Name it "Vista" or another easyto-remember name. 3 Find any downloaded application setup packages on your hard drive. These will either be compressed files (.zip) or executable (.exe). Move all installation packages to the "Vista" folder you created in Step 2. 4 Copy the "Vista" folder to a CD/DVD, a USB thumb drive, an external hard drive or to any other storage device. 5 Write down any license keys that you have purchased. Programs often list license keys under the "Help" selection in the menu bar. 6 Download and install the Easy Transfer Wizard for Windows XP (see Resources). (You may also manually back up your settings and folders and copy them to an external storage device or media.) 7 Close all programs. Run the Easy Transfer Wizard. Click "Next." 8 Select an appropriate media type or external storage type. 9 Choose "This is my old computer." 10 De-select any user accounts that you don't want to preserve. 11 Enter a password, and confirm the password if you desire. (Write down the password if you decide to password-protect your data.) Click "Save." 12 Navigate to the appropriate external storage device. Click "Save." 13 Click "Next" when Windows prompts you to do so. 14 Write down the name and location of your backed up files if necessary. 15 Click on "Next," then "Close." 16

Browse to your storage device and ensure that your backed-up files are listed. Eject your external device or disk. 17 Insert your Windows Vista installation disc. Perform a "Custom Installation." 18 Insert or connect your external media device that contains your file backups. 19 Navigate to your saved "Easy Transfer" file. Double-click it. 20 Enter your password if applicable. Click "Next." 21 Click "Transfer." 22 Click "Close," then "Restart now." 23 Reinstall all of the programs that you have on installation disks and that you saved in the "Vista" folder earlier.
