Sheridan at Cedar Creek, Oct. 19, 1864 By Jonathan Lucci Frederick County Report As most residents of Frederick County probably know the horror and carnage of the American Civil War flooded into the Shenandoah Valley 150 years ago. Six large full scale battles and a number of skirmishes seared wars consequences into the soul of Frederick County, while farms everywhere were destroyed during The Burning in 1864. Much of that history has been preserved, while sadly much of it has also been lost to development. Anyone interested in the Civil War will quickly notice the myriad collection of historical markers lining the roads all throughout the county. A Civil War buff of any level of enthusiasm can find parts of most of the

Queen of Pearl Catholic Church in Arlington. Several other groups were there also, and two young volunteers Ty and Matt were with the Foundry United Methodist group. Its a way to give back, it feels like it helps the community, said Ty. We came out here last year and we were looking forward to coming back and its nice to be out on a farm, Matt added. Its great to see mountains and trees where we usually see streets and buildings. Ty said, looking around at the blue sky and distant hills. As Betty walked through the orchard, some of the participants asked her questions about how the fruit would be used. Well, the recipients could eat it fresh or make jam, but theyll probably eat it the way it is. A lot of people in need dont have the means to make jam because its expensive, you need equipment for that and fresh fruit is scarce in their lives. she explained. One of the volunteers who came out was Puwen Lee, who is the head of volunteers from the
Society of St. Andrews (SOSA) District Coordinator Betty Heishman By Carol Ballard Frederick County Report On the bright morning of September 10 in Winchesters Marker-Millers plum orchard, busy, smiling, people were gathering fruit for hungry people they didnt even know. They had taken the time to drive from hours away to participate in an activity called gleaning. The volunteers are from civic, church, and community groups, said Betty Heishman. She has been the Winchesters Society of St. Andrews (SOSA) district coordinator for 12 years. Today, in her pink cowboy hat, she was in charge of the gleaning operation at the orchard, and energetically walked through the scattered clusters of pickers making sure everyone was doing okay.
Volunteer gleaners She explained that SOSA is a non-denominational, non-profit organization, and has branches all over the United States. Food gathered after the harvests in our area is donated to Lord Fairfax Food Banks, C-Cap and Salvation Army in Winchester and is delivered to 15 places in the Front Royal area and Martinsburg, as well as Luray and Purcellville. The gleaners were friendly and willing to share their reasons for volunteering while they continued to pick the ripe fruit and fill up the pink buckets placed around the orchard. Our church group was interested in gleaning and I liked the notion of spending a few of my Saturday mornings in beautiful surroundings and helping people at the same time, said Paul Rupport, with a smile. He explained that their group of 15 had come from Our Lady

Volunteer NIck from Our Lady Queen of Pearl Catholic Church in Arlington Arlington Food Assistance Center. Were serving over 1,300 families a week now in Arlington. Despite the fact that its a wealthy community, lots of people dont have enough money to purchase food. she said. Betty continued outlining the summer and fall harvest. She said it starts with the strawberry harvest in June and goes through November 5 and from now until November, they will be gleaning three times a week. Right now, theres a need for help during the week, not just on the weekend, which is perfect for those who have odd work shifts or are retired and Betty wants people to know how important even a small amount of time can be. I calculated that we collected 450 servings of food per person yesterday in two hours time. Isnt it amazing to think that in two hours of work you are providing to one of those people who deserves that serving? she asked, and continued, People are so busy, they forget to plan for an event like this one and then the season is over. This year, Saturday Nov. 5 is the last day of gleaning. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in a two-acre turnip field which Marker-Miller Farms has set aside for SOSA members to grow

Humidifier May Help Dogs Skin Allergy
DEAR PAWS CORNER: I have just read your column about Cara, the 7-year-dog with skin allergies who itches and scratches terribly. My dog had this problem, too, and I was helped by the Tibetan Terrier Club of Canada with a very simple solution run a humidifier for at least eight hours per day in the room where Cara sleeps. I did this with my scratchy fellow, and the problem was solved within a few days! Neither my vet nor groomer had ever heard of such a thing. I also switched to Science Diet Sensitive Skin kibbles. No more scratching at my house. Hope you can pass this on to Caras owner. Pattie R., via email DEAR PATTIE: Thanks for the helpful advice! A change in diet and the humidifier may have a positive effect on Caras allergies. Pets can be very sensitive to seemingly benign dog or cat foods, and its often a trial-and-error process to find a diet that such pets can tolerate. Be sure to include your pets veterinarian in the process so that he or she knows what your pet is eating and is able to offer advice and expertise that could help. The Tibetan Terrier Club of Canada can be found online at www. tibetanterriercanada.com. The site has general information about the Tibetan Terrier breed and basic care guidelines, as well as links to other Tibetan Terrier clubs around the world. Readers, have you found a diet or medical remedy for your allergic pet? Let others know by sending in your pets story to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paws Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Admission prices are under discussion, likely between $10-15. All proceeds benefit historic St. Thomas Chapel. This event is a primary fundraiser for St. Thomas. We hope to gain regional attention for the event in order that more people and organizations become aware of St. Thomas and its history Saturday, October 15 8am - 1pm Frederick County Recycling, Southern Scrap/Williams Recycling and Dominion Document Shredding will partner to offer a free community shredding event. The event will be held at 370 Stine Lane, just off Martinsburg Pike. (See our website for directions.) Residents may shred up to five boxes of paper documents free of charge. The business rate is 10 cents per pound. Shredding done on site, no waiting. We unload and you go! Protect your personal info. Recycle paper. Refreshments and giveaways.
