This standard will be updated when necessary by distribution of a complete replacement. Amended or additional parts of revised pages will be marked by a vertical black line in the adjacent margin. Issue 1 Date Sept. 95 Comments Original document
This standard shall be complied with by all persons who are responsible for the design, installation, inspection, or maintenance of the track on Railtrack controlled infrastructure.
Implementation
The provisions of this Railway Group Standard are mandatory and apply from 6th April 1996.
Railtrack PLC makes no warranties, express or implied, that compliance with all or any of Railway Group Standards is sufficient on its own to ensure safe systems of work or operation. Each user is reminded of its own responsibilities to ensure health and safety at work and its individual duties under health and safety legislation.

Issue One
This standard specifies the method of categorising track, based on usage, and thereby provides a method for applying the variations in track requirements which other track standards may reference. The contents of this standard apply to all infrastructure controlled by Railtrack. 3.1. As the mandatory requirements relating to design, maintenance, renewal and inspection of the track vary according to usage and speed, sections of track must be categorised such that the variations in the requirements can be correctly specified and applied. 3.2 For the purposes of safe interworking all parties must use the same criteria to calculate the categories. This standard is referenced by the other standards in the GC/RM5600 Track Standards Manual. 3.3. The categories to be used are based on speed and Equivalent Million Gross Tonnes Per Annum (EMGTPA). EMGTPA takes into account variations in damage caused by normal traffic and the calculation for EMGTPA is based on that specified in UIC leaflet 714 for Theoretical Traffic Load. 3.4 The boundaries of the categories are based on historical and experimental data and are described on a graph which has speed plotted against EMGTPA.
2 Scope 3 Principles
EMGTPA = Sp(Kp.Tp + Kt.Ttp) + Sf(Kf.Tf + Kt.Ttf) Where: Tp = Tonnage of passenger vehicles hauled. Tf = freight vehicles hauled. Ttp = passenger tractive units. Ttf = freight tractive units. Note: Tonnages are Annual but based on mean daily values. EMUs & DMUs to be considered as hauled passenger vehicles. HST power cars to be considered as passenger tractive units. Bogie load and wear coefficients: Kp = 0.80 for DMUs * see note below Kp = 1.00 for other passenger stock. Kf = 1.15 where either: all freight vehicles have axle loadings of less than 20.0T or freight vehicle with axles loadings between 20.0T and 22.5T account for less than 50% of total freight traffic.

The horizontal portions of the track category boundaries are based on the maximum speeds of the principal traffic types; the curved portions of the track category boundaries up to 25 equivalent gross million tonnes per annum (EMGTPA) are based on current and past experience. Above 25 EMGTPA the curves have been extrapolated to reflect the anticipated track damage for very heavily used lines. The 6 basic track categories may be defined as follows: Category 1: Category 2: Category 3 Category 4 Category 5 Category 6 For high train speeds and high tonnage. From moderate to high train speeds and high tonnage. For moderate train speeds and moderate to high tonnage. For moderate train speeds and moderate tonnage For moderate train speed and low tonnage For low train speeds and low tonnage
