UPG-0006 Ver. 1.0 Standard Operating Procedure - Power Generation 3/7

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
Between September and November 2006, a modification phase took place on the
DLB Acergy Polaris. The main steps were :
- the installation of a new J-Lay Tower system
- the upgrade of the power generation.

Therefore the purpose of this document is describe the power generation on board
the Acergy Polaris.

2. ELECTRICAL CONFIGURATION
2.1 POWER GENERATION
See drawing Annexe 1, Polaris distribution one line diagram.

§ Polaris power generation is divided in three electrical rooms:

- the generator room inside the barge including 3 new Wartsila generator sets
(3x1980kVA) with their main switchboard ;
- the generator room inside the Clyde crane tub including 2 Caterpillar
generator sets (3x1800 kVA) with their main switchboard
- the emergency generator room inside the Clyde crane tub including 1
Wartsila generator set (800 kVA) with its main switchboard.

§ These switchboards are on a loop allowing redundancy and flexibility to the

power generation. Each generator set can power supply each switchboard. See
§2.

§ This power generation feed (See document UPG-0005 : Power balance analysis
for more details) :
- The barge needs (accommodation, welding machines,…) ;
- The 2 ROV needs ;
- The J-Lay Tower needs
- The S-Lay tensionners and welding machine
- The two electrical tunnel thrusters.

2.2 PROPULSION DETAILS

Polaris propulsion is based on :

§ 4 independent azimuth thrusters.

Each thruster is powered by its own diesel engine Bergen and a 240kVA shaft
generator and its associated switchboard is connected to its shaft generator. In
case of trouble on this shaft generator, the switchboard can be automatically
fed from the barge main power distribution.

§ 2 electrical tunnel thrusters (1700kW each)

These two thrusters are connected to the barge main power distribution.

3. POWER GENERATION – NORMAL USE

§ The normal consideration for the power generation use is the following :
- 3 generator sets in use
- 1 in stand-by
- 1 in maintenance.

§ It has been fixed that 4 generator sets have to run when the tunnel thrusters
must be operated at a high level.

§ During this power generation modification (fall 2006), a new power

management system (PMS) has been installed on board to ensure continuity of
electrical supply under all operating conditions by monitoring the power network
and controlling the power generation components (generator sets,
switchboards, circuit breakers,…)

§ In case of black out, the emergency generator set takes over automatically and
supplies all emergency consumers (fire pumps, cooling pumps, fans, emergency
lighting,…)

§ See document UPG-0005 : Power balance analysis for more details on power
availability and power consumption on board the Polaris.

§ See document UPG-0002 : Power Management System for more details on the
power Management System philosophy on board the Polaris.

4. BLACK OUT RECOVERY AND SEQUENCE RESTART

§ The four incomers of emergency switchboard (2 shore connections, emergency
generator set, emergency bus tie) are equipped with voltage controllers.

§ When a black out occurs on the main source, the three phase voltage controller
detects voltage loss on the main source and after a time delay cycle sends a
temporary closing order to the emergency generator set PLC that delivers a
starting order to the emergency engine when the following conditions have been
met:
- voltage is present on emergency source
- no voltage on shore connections and bus tie supplies.

§ The emergency circuit breaker is automatically closed on the bus bar that
supplies every emergency consumers.

§ When voltage is restored on the main network and at end of cycle, the time
delay relay is energised, sends a temporary opening order to the emergency
circuit breaker and a temporary closing order to the main circuit breaker.

5. EMPHASIS ON PARTICULAR TOOLS

5.1 ROV
§ The Polaris is equipped with two ROVs. They need power for their winch HPU
and for their own supply. This power comes from the barge main power
generation.

5.2 CRANE

§ The Clyde crane installed on the Polaris is powered by independent diesel

engines. Swinging, hoisting and masting are independent from the barge power
generation.

§ Only small auxiliary consumers are powered through the barge power
generation like lighting.

§ The crane has its own emergency generator set.

5.3 J-LAY TOWER

§ The J-Lay towered is integrally power supplied by the barge power generation.

§ The following consumers are connected to the barge emergency switchboard :

- MCR normal supply
- MCR emergency supply
- PES emergency supply
- EPU emergency supply

§ That means that in case of black out, the tower turns to safety mode. Every
operation stops. See document A04-48000 J-Lay Tower operating manual for
more details.
