TALKING POINTS: 30th Anniversary of AIDS

AIDS 30th Anniversary & HIV/AIDS


2011 marks the 30th anniversary of when AIDS was first reported to the CDC in June 1981. Before AIDS became a known disease, the first cases reported to the CDC started with five Los Angeles gay men carrying pneumonia, in June, 1981. Currently 33 million people live with HIV/AIDS in the world, plus 40,000 new HIV/AIDS infections each year in the United States. As of 2005, there have been nearly 3,000 AIDS cases reported in Hawaii HIV/AIDS is now considered to be a chronic illness with HIV/AIDS positive survivors living longer and healthier lives today. National Organizations like, Until Theres a Cure and Project RideRED also commemorate the 30th anniversary for HIV/AIDS by promoting awareness. Anderson Coopers AC360 CNN show aired a program special titled Hope survives 30 years after first U.S. AIDS diagnosi," on January 14th to support the AIDS 30th anniversary. This program featured celebrities and public figures that are active in the HIV/AIDS community. CNN invites people to celebrate the 30th anniversary of AIDS by sending a video of personal thoughts about the disease and any personal experiences.

Life Foundation
Life Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps fight and prevent HIV/AIDS in Hawaii and the Pacific. Started in 1983, the organization has grown to be the largest HIV/AIDS organizations in Hawaii. Life Foundation serves nearly 700 men, women and youth living in Oahu, providing them with HIV testing, outreach assistance and education. The Life Foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary AIDS Walk, April 17th 2011. Life Foundation has been serving AIDS education and health services and assistance to the community and HIV-AIDS positive people since 1983. Life Foundation works with over 700 HIV positive people, helping them obtain the emotional, physical, and financial support that they need. Rapid HIV testing (results in 15 minutes) and counseling are free and confidential, at Life Foundation. Life Foundations mission is to stop the spread of the HIV/AIDS disease, to empower the effected and improve those living with the disease.

Timeline of HIV/AIDS in Hawaii


1981: 1st U.S. cases of AIDS reported in Los Angeles on June 5. 1983: 1st AIDS Cases reported in Hawaii; Life Foundation is founded. *3 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1985: Celebrity actor Rock Hudson dies of AIDS; The 1st International AIDS Conference is held along with the 1st Federal funds to Hawaii DOH for testing, counseling, education and prevention. *34 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1986: AIDS Community Care Team (ACCT) is organized; ASO/DOH/Consumer reps meet to discuss and share information about service needs, service delivery and funding; First Neighbor Island ASOs form along with Maui AIDS Foundatin and Malama Pono in Kauai County. *66 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1987: Big Island has their AIDS Project; Governors Committee on HIV/AIDS is formed; ACT-UP in NYC begins their protests against drug companies; AIDS Quilt begins. *97 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1988: Gregory House opens its AIDS Housing facility; People with AIDS Coalition (PWAC) is started; 1st World AIDS Day is recognized on December 1st. *143 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1989: 1st major state funding for AIDS services is started; Hospitals start implementing AIDS clinics; DOH creates STD/AIDS Prevention Branch and starts H-SPAMM data collection program. *143 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1990: Ryan White CARE Act createdHawaii qualifies for Title II funding; AIDS Clinical Research Program at UH is developed; Hawaii syringe access law is created, becoming the first statewide program in the U.S. *185 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1991: The Ryan White Funding is available for H-DAP, H-COBRA and H-NAP. *235 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1993: PWA FoodBasket is started by PWAC-Hawaii. *395 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1994: West Hawaii AIDS Foundation (WHAF) becomes separate ASO based in Kailua-Kona. *477 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1995: Governor Cayetano cuts funding for GCHA committee continues to function on an all-volunteer basis; FDA approves first protease inhibitor. *500+ people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 1996: FoodBasket Saved is created; AIDS death rate begins to decline; Clinton & Gore view Quilt display on National Mall. *600+ people living with AIDS in Hawaii.

1997: Housing Opportunities for People With AIDS (HOPWA) funding for Gregory House Programs is started. *747 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 2002: DOH provides Cumulative AIDS Case data 1983-2002 and Percent of total cases by County: Oahu cases (1859, 72%), Hawaii County (367, 14%), Maui County (263, 10%), Kauai County (115, 4%), Total Cases Statewide (2594, 100%) 2003: BIAP and WHAF merge to form Hawaii Island HIV/AIDS Foundation (HIHAF). *1,279 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 2004: GCHA ceases operation due to opposition from Lingle Administration; Prevention Planning and Care Planning groups merge. *1,293 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 2006: NIH cuts funding for Hawaii AIDS Clinical Research Program (HACTU); Clint Spencer Clinic threatened with closure. *1,2xx people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 2007: Legislature provides $1.2 million to sustain HACTU change to Hawaii AIDS Clinical Research Program (HACRP) *1,259 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 2008: Hawaii begins Named Reporting of HIV cases; HACRP becomes official UH center with name change to Hawaii Center for AIDS. *1,291 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 2009: New Hawaii law removes requirement for written consent for HIV testing; Obama administration releases National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States. *2,169 people living with AIDS in Hawaii. 2010: Abercrombie elected as governor for the state of Hawaii. *? people living with HIV/AIDS in Hawaii. 2011: 30 years of AIDS. *? people living with HIV/AIDS in Hawaii.
