of St.

Johns in Pine Meadow

St. Johns mission is to nurture all people in their spiritual growth, in their Christian education, and in their relationship with God. The Rev. Salin Low, Rector October 2011

MINISTRY OUTSIDE OUR WALLS

The month of September brings a psychological change of seasons, though the true change to autumn occurs much later in the month. Days get cooler and shorter, kids get back to school, and the scenery here in New England becomes spectacular. In the church September brings the start of church school, and what many of us consider the true start of the church year. For the first time St. John's has the space it needs and so richly deserves for the young people. The Rector and parish administrator each have new offices, and the choir finally has a room to practice in. We even have been blessed with a recently ordained Deacon to share in some of the Rector's duties. There is indeed much to be thankful for in our new addition and our beautiful existing church. At a recent meeting of the Vestry and stewardship committee, it was ministry to the greater community, however, that garnered much discussion. Outreach is so vital to nurturing our souls and those outside our walls. The Watoto concert in May organized by the confirmation class was a huge success. Various activities on the green over the summer, the upcoming party in the park auction, pencil boxes for Hartford school children, and the monthly trip to Peter's Retreat are valuable outreach programs that give us exposure to the greater community. These are the type of program the Vestry is looking to expand upon. All these programs, as well as the day to day activities of the church, require funding. After an extremely successful capital campaign three years ago, the stewardship committee has set another lofty goal of reducing the years-long budget deficit. Members of St. John's will again in October be called upon to prayerfully consider their financial commitment to the parish for the future year. Just as costs of maintaining our own homes has increased, so has the cost to maintain God's house. We all want a vibrant, thriving, safe and secure church home to call our own. I am confident our goals can be met for 2012 and beyond, with God's help! Faithfully yours,

Stan Moraski

Shopping Cards
An Easy Way to Help When you buy shopping/gift cards through St. Johns, you are making a contribution that does not cost you financially. It may take a little planning. Orders are taken the 1st and 3rd Sundays, and cards are delivered on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. Order folds are available in the narthex and can be placed in the lockbox at any time.

COMMITMENT SUNDAY IS OCT 30

That day we make our financial commitment to the parish for the coming year. This year we will be involved in an every member canvass, which means a member of the stewardship committee will call on you sometime between October 16 and 30 to encourage your pledge. Please make time for that visit and consider what St. Johns has given you and contribute what you can in thanksgiving. This year we are asking parishioners to consider increasing their annual pledges by some portion of the amounts pledged during the recently completed capital campaign. It will be a stretch that can make a difference in St. Johns future ministry.

Canon Jack Spaeth to Speak Oct 2

Jack Spaeth, Canon for Stewardship and Administration, has served the Diocese of Connecticut for 30 years and will retire at the end of the year. He has been a friend of this parish in many ways over the years. He will speak on stewardship at both services and will be available for questions and comments after each service. This is a wonderful opportunity to call on his wisdom and experience, as well as to thank him for his service.

There was quite a group from St. Johns at Denise Adessas ordination at Christ Church Cathedral on September 10. It was a wonderful way to support Denise in her new ministry.

It was a busy day on September 11. Classes began with the usual cookout. There was a special service in honor of 9/11/01. After the cookout there were games on the green and some kids explored the fire engine. Check out www.reddoors.com for updated pix and information about parish activities.

On September 18 the hurricane-delayed baptism of Jonathan Wallace Truss, son of Susan and Tony, grandson of Wally and Debbie, finally took place. It was joyous!!
