In the January 2002 issue of R.O.B.

Magazine a study was issued which indicates the top 100 companies to work for in Canada. As indicated in the study each of these corporations offer a wide range of appealing benefits and advantages. For instance, Flight Centre Ltd., which is located in Toronto, holds monthly parties and travel discounts for all employees. Among these companies was also Procter & Gamble Inc. Like these other companies, Procter & Gamble offers prime benefits and utilizes several of the Organizational Behaviour concepts or theories. These are some of the reasons that it was ranked #34 in the field of 50. The manufacturing company of Procter & Gamble Incorporated is known globally with locations in 80 countries and distribute to over 5 billion consumers in 130 countries. They have begun producing goods in Canada since 1915 but were established in 1837 as a small family business making soaps and candles in Cincinnati, Ohio. The nature of the company is the manufacturing of products which consumers use in everyday life, for example some of their 250 products which they manufacture are: dishwashing detergents, household cleaners, laundry and fabric care, paper, feminine care, personal soaps, water filtration systems, cough and cold medicine, dog and cat food, healthcare, deodorants/antiperspirants, hair care, skin care, cosmetics, and prescription drugs. Some familiar product names which are well recognized include the following: Tide, Bounce, Camay, Tampax, Pampers, Zest, Olay, Hugo Boss Fragrances, Giorgio Fragrances, Head and Shoulders, Pert Plus, Cover Girl, Max Factor, Old Spice Fragrances, Cheer, Ivory, Febreze, Mr. Clean, Swiffer, Joy, Sunny Delight, Folgers, Pringles, Vicks, Nyquil, Crest, Scope, Iams, PUR, Pepto-Bismol, Bounty, Charmin, and Puffs, to list a few . Procter & Gamble Canada has various locations beginning with the general office in Toronto at 4711 Yonge Street, the manufacturing facilities are located in Belville and Brockville, and the original distribution centre is still located in Hamilton, Ontario. The regional sales offices are located in Halifax, Montreal and Calgary to cover from coast to coast. In Canada Procter & Gamble has 2716 employees; in Toronto alone they have 650 employees. Globally the company employ's an estimated 106,000 people. In 2001 Procter & Gamble made revenue that exceeded $37 billion globally, with Canada contributing 1.9 billion of that revenue. Many reasons can explain the cause of Procter & Gamble's success; some of these are expressing workforce diversity, values, job satisfaction, and motivating to accommodate individual differences. Procter & Gamble displays excellent workforce diversity by hiring a person not on the basis of background characteristics such as race, age, sex, culture or disability, rather by their dedication to the job. The company awards pay raises and bonuses not based entirely on past knowledge or seniority but on how the individual performs. This way of giving bonuses is logical because, one could have an employee work at a job for two months and get more work done than the employee who has been working their for twelve years, therefore the employee who performs better and gets their work completed should be awarded a raise or bonus. However, also being a loyal employee to the company should be rewarded with a raise. Procter & Gamble is perhaps the most well respected company, as it is renowned for its continuing monetary contributions to the underprivileged around the world. Because of the diversity evident in the workforce at Procter & Gamble, employees are granted 13 paid holidays, which are both personal and statutory in nature. As mentioned previously, also contributing to Procter & Gamble's success is their value system; referred to as core values, including P&G People, Leadership, Ownership, Integrity, Passion for Winning, and Trust. P&G People refers to the companies act on conviction that their employees both men and women will be their most important assets. Leadership refers to the company's clear vision of what is going to happen. With this they can produce strategies and obtain the capability to deliver them and eliminate organizational barriers. Ownership refers to the employers all acting as though they are owners and every decision is in the well being of the company for long-term, they also strive to help other improve their effectiveness. Integrity refers to being honest, doing the right thing and being straightforward with each other. Passion for Winning refers to the company having a realistic desire to improve and win in the business world. And lastly Trust, which refers to the notion of treating others the way we would like to be treated, also referring to having the confidence in fellow employees capabilities and intentions. Procter & Gamble's Core Values all work relative to one another and are a major contribution to the success of the company and making it one of the top fifty places employees enjoy working. This leads us to the next issue that indicates job satisfaction at Procter & Gamble. Many of the employees seem to be satisfied with their jobs due to the fact that there is plenty of leeway in Procter & Gamble for promotions or transfers to different sectors or even countries. Procter & Gamble offers the most rewarding benefits from the time an employee is hired to the time they leave. This being said Procter & Gamble offers plenty of benefits that cover not only the employees themselves but their dependants also. Examples of the company's comprehensive benefits include: health, dental, disability, life and accident insurance. Procter & Gamble has ranked at the top in many magazines and has won various awards for employee satisfaction poles, to list a few: the Cinergy Inclusion Network Leadership Award 2001 for the company's outstanding efforts in providing workplace access and accommodations to workers with disabilities.4 Procter & Gamble have also won many awards for being a good place to work, eight of them being from last year alone. The company also offers counselling to its employees with work or home related problems, this is to ensure that the employees well-being is

taken care of and also that of the company's. In order for Procter & Gamble to remain successful they should maintain operating the way they are and keep offering these wonderful benefits to satisfy their employees. Lastly, one other contribution to the success of Procter & Gamble would be motivating to accommodate differences. This is evident with the proof of the awards they received for example; the Cinergy award spoken about earlier shows how they accommodate their disabled employees. They also won an award for working mothers, the company's benefits is relieving to pregnant women because they could leave 15 weeks before their due date and earn 95% of their earnings.5 Procter & Gamble offers a good retirement plan for those individuals planning ahead and want to enjoy the luxuries of live a bit earlier are able to due so with an early retirement plan that the company offers. The employees normally get together for outings and interact with each other in order to keep good communications with one another. Another great motivator could be that when employees are hired they may not have the knowledge of certain things in order to be granted a promotion. What Procter & Gamble has done is give the employees an education benefit where if they successfully complete the course Procter & Gamble will cover the tuition fee. This gives the employees motivation to strive for a promotion within the same company and also allows the company to keep a knowledgeable staff up to date with the fast changing world. In retrospect, Procter & Gamble displays various evidence, which contributes to the company's success. The employees are satisfied with what the company offers in terms of benefits and the company is satisfied with the production of their satisfied employees. In order for an organization to progress in today's modern world they must offer their employees an appealing offer so that they can be at the top of the business world. Procter & Gamble offers recognition to all their employees by giving them many benefits that other companies don't offer. If Procter & Gamble was on a list of companies that one must choose to work for then, they would be ranked in the top fifty every year. Procter & Gamble is an excellent company to work for due to the fact that they not only offer their employees great benefits but they contribute quite a bit to the community around them. These contributions made them one of the most respected companies by their fellow business associates and one of the better places to work for employees.
