LITERARY ANALYSIS DISCUSSION SEMINAR RUBRIC Pre-IB English I / Knight

TITLE OF WORK BEING DISCUSSED: ___________________________________ WRITTEN BY ___________________________________________ TASK: Using your knowledge of the elements and styles of literature, your individual (and/or group) study of the assigned work, and ability to make inferences and participate in an intelligent discussion, students will actively engage in a student/teacher led discussion seminar based on a specific work of literature. OBJECTIVE: After students have read and annotated the assigned work of literature, and responded to pre-seminar discussion questions they should be able to facilitate and/or participate in a discussion seminar. Students should be able to do the following: (1) recognize certain literary devices used within the work; (2) identify specific styles of writing; and (3) lead and/or contribute to an intelligent discussion of the work. STANDARDS: LA.910.1, LA.910.2, LA.910.5 MATERIALS: textbook (or copy of the work), journal, literary terms, analysis outline, Paedeia discussion questions, study aids/notes, paper, pencils, etc. AREAS OF EVALUATION: 1.
NOTE: I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU READ THIS

PARTICIPATION [PT]*: this score will be based on not how frequently you participate, but the quality of your participation. You must make LEVEL THREE and LEVEL FOUR type responses. That means, if you simply raise your hand and ask an inane question or make an of topic response you will not acquire any credit. Your comments and responses must be of both substance and value backed up with evidence from the assigned text. VALUE: 25 points
*NOTE: IF YOU SAY NOTHING or DO NOTHING (i.e. daydream, fail to take notes, exhibit off task behavior, etc.) DURING THE DISCUSSION YOU WILL SCORE AN F (no exceptions).

PREPAREDNESS [PR]: this score will be based on how well you are prepared for the discussion. I will be looking for assigned materials (i.e. rubrics, outlines, annotations, question responses, journal entries, study aids/notes, paper, textbook, pencils, etc.) being used. In order to be an active participant in the discussion, you MUST have the materials to achieve that goal. This section also includes whether or not you have the content knowledge to participate/contribute to the discussion. VALUE: 25 points [PT] _______/25 [PR] _______/25 [TOTAL] _______/50
