Estimated weekly out of class time: Reading Problems Assessment: Class Assigned Problems Midterm Test Final Exam Total NOTES:

15% (See Note 6) 20% 65% 100%

1. The Final Examination is for evaluation purposes only and will not be returned to the student. 2. To pass this course the student must obtain 50% of the total marks and must also pass the Final Examination in the course. 3. A mid-term examination will be held (if rooms are available) on October xx, 2011 at 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. The location will be announced later. IF ROOMS FOR THE MID-TERM ARE NOT ARRANGEMENTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN CLASS. AVAILABLE OTHER

4. Lecture notes will be posted on the Course WebCT site prior to the lectures.

5. PA assignments: A set of assignments will be given each week. The assignments are relevant to the course material and the solutions can be discussed at the PA sessions. The PA assignments will not be collected or marked.

6. Class Assigned Problems One question will be assigned during each lecture which covers the material covered in that lecture. The question can be downloaded from WebCT. The solution to the problem, in the prescribed format, can be submitted to the course lecturer at the beginning of the next lecture. Only one solution will be accepted per student. The problem solution will be reviewed by the course lecturer and marked by the TA. The marked paper will be returned by the TA at the PA session of the following week. The marking scheme for the problem will be: 5 correct; 3 partially correct: 0 - not correct It is planned that there will be approximately 15 Class assigned Problems given throughout the term and the value of these problems will count as 15% of the final grade. One question from these assigned questions will appear on the Midterm and Final examinations.

The goals of the Class Assigned Problems are as follows: (i) to encourage students to stay current with the course material through the term (ii) to encourage students to attend lectures (iii) to encourage students to follow a logical solution procedure (iv) to require students to present their problem solutions in a legible format

Peer Assisted Study Sessions

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) are voluntary weekly study sessions led by peer students who have earned at least an A- in this course. This is a chance for you to get together in a safe, friendly environment with people in your class to compare notes, to discuss important concepts and to develop strategies for studying the subject. Whether your goal is to survive the course or maintain your A average, the PASS facilitator can help you achieve your goal. The PASS facilitator for this course is Anne Wice and can be reached by email (pass@carleton.ca) (Important - be sure to include Annes name in the subject line so your message can be forwarded!) or by phone at 520-2600, extension 8480. Information on the PASS sessions can be obtained on the PASS website (www.carleton.ca/pass).

Accommodation Statement:
You may need special arrangements to meet your academic obligations during the term. For an accommodation request the processes are as follows: Pregnancy obligation: write to me with any requests for academic accommodation during the first two weeks of class, or as soon as possible after the need for accommodation is known to exist. For more details visit the Equity Services website http://www.carleton.ca/equity/accommodation/ Religious obligation: write to me with any requests for academic accommodation during the first two weeks of class, or as soon as possible after the need for accommodation is known to exist. For more details visit the Equity Services website http://www.carleton.ca/equity/accommodation/ Students with disabilities requiring academic accommodations in this course must register with the Paul Menton Centre for Students with Disabilities (PMC) for a formal evaluation of disability-related needs. Documented disabilities could include but are not limited to mobility/physical impairments, specific Learning Disabilities (LD), psychiatric/psychological disabilities, sensory disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and chronic medical conditions. Registered PMC students are required to contact the PMC, 613-520-6608, every term to ensure that I receive your Letter of Accommodation, no later than two weeks before the first assignment is due or the first in-class test/midterm requiring accommodations. If you only require accommodations for your formally scheduled exam(s) in this course, please submit your request for accommodations to PMC by the deadlines published on the PMC website: http://www2.carleton.ca/pmc/new-and-current-students/dates-and-deadlines/
