SUMMARY

I wrote my rules based on middle and fifth grade level reading comprehensions. I wanted
to keep the rules simple. Some sites included elaborate punishments and complicated
laws about copyrighting in general. I felt that in the cases where some authors ask others
to obtain their permission first, getting that permission should be within the rules for
students and teachers to adhere to. In the cases where students are turning in assignments,
I felt that they should know revision and paraphrasing are examples of plagiarism and if
they know this, the teacher can elaborate more on examples in their classroom. I looked
at the Kentucky University version because it was on an education based website for
Granada High School. The definition they used was based off of the Kentucky University
rules, I think, because their policy went in depth and used examples of what plagiarism
looks like and what teachers look for. Again, I think teachers of their subject should speak
directly to their students about the rules and how they will look for it. As long as students
understand that teachers will look for it, and have explained this agreement to students, it
seems that they will be responsible instead of being too scared to use any references.
Using references is also a learning process and I wanted my policy to reflect that they
should ask first, if they are unsure as well as know that sometimes, authors request
permission directly even for noncommercial reproduction of their materials.
