Undergraduate Career Pathways Checklist


FIRST YEAR STUDENTS
___ Meet with OCD staff to discuss your interests, values, and abilities (Steps 1 & 2 of iSucceed Career Development Process Model) ___ Meet with your advisor (Fall & Spring) ___ Join clubs/organizations/student activities/student government (e.g. Cue & Curtain Players Theatre, Immaculatan Newspaper) (Fall & Spring) Attend Involvement Fair after Convocation (Fall) Explore Work Study positions (Fall) o Attend Work Study Job Fair (August) Explore Emerging Leaders Program (Fall, see Greg Striano for details) ___ Meet your professors. Develop a relationship with them in and out of the classroom. ___ If Undecided, sign up for vocational testing at Office of Career Development (Fall) Participate in Major Decisions: The First Step in Your Career Plan workshop Utilize career resource library to research majors and careers Meet with Career Services to learn more about the online FOCUS system Enroll in Psych 100 (Spring) ___ Explore learning style profile (as discussed in FYE class) with OCD staff. ___ Explore Temperament profile (as discussed in FYE class) with OCD staff. ___ Attend Major/Minor Fair (Fall) ___ Participate in the Externship Program (Job Shadowing) (Spring) ___ Begin resume/cover letter preparation ___ Look for summer jobs or volunteer experiences relevant to your major. ___ Participate in career workshops & events ___ Participate in MacEd series ___ Declare a Major (Spring, Declaration of Major Week)

SOPHOMORE YEAR STUDENTS


___ Meet with OCD staff to discuss your career goals (Step 3 of iSucceed Career Development Process Model). ___ Explore a double Major or minor if you are interested (Fall & Spring) ___ Get involved in your major. Meet with your advisor on a regular basis to discuss opportunities within the department. Participate in independent study opportunities or creative projects. Join professional organizations relevant to your major. Student memberships are often offered at a reduced rate (e.g. National Education Association). Participate in Informational Interviews (e.g. TechTrek for IT majors). Utilize career library to gain more information about careers available within your major. Utilize online FOCUS system. ___ Explore leadership opportunities on campus (Fall & Spring) (Talk with Office of Career Development and Office of Student Development & Leadership) ___ Learn Interviewing Skills via Career Workshops and mock interviews ___ Join clubs/organizations/student activities/student government (e.g. Fashion Club, Psychology Club) (Fall & Spring) ___ Consider registering for electives that will increase your employability, making you more marketable and versatile. JUNIOR YEAR STUDENTS ___ Meet with OCD staff to discuss your career action plan and timeline (Step 4 of iSucceed Career Development Process Model) ___ Connect with your academic department regarding internship requirements (OCD may serve as an additional resource) ___ Visit the Bruder Center to explore the employer binders and job/internship binders ___ Attend career fairs ___ Keep your resume updated! ___ Participate in a video taped Mock Interview ___ Participate in the Externship Program ___ Find a part-time/summer job related to your Major ___ Select business attire for interviews. See Office of Career Development for wardrobe tips. ___ Utilize the Career Resource Library to research occupations and graduate schools Explore options for graduate or professional school. Consider 2-3 years of employment first to enhance learning. Take graduate school practice tests and attend strategy sessions Meet with your advisor to discuss graduate testing and application procedures. SENIOR YEAR STUDENTS
___ Obtain additional career counseling assistance (What to do after graduation?) ___ If planning to attend graduate school, complete all application materials and write a statement of purpose. ___ Network with friends, family, faculty, alumni, and others. Most jobs are found through networking. ___ Connect with your academic department regarding internship requirements (OCD may serve as an additional resource) ___ Tailor your resume for each position you plan to apply, and write cover letters for each application. Bring to Office of Career Development for critique. ___ Read professional journals relevant to your field in order to stay on top of current trends. This may help you during interviews! ___ Visit the Bruder Center to explore the employer binders and job/internship binders ___ Attend on-campus and off-campus career fairs Look for those specific to your field of interest (e.g. DVEC Teacher Job Fair) ___ Attend career workshops & events Senior Career Social (Spring) ___ Participate in the Externship Program ___ Analyze job offers based on Step 4 of the iSucceed Career Development Model.
