THIS WEEKS COMMENT

John Bevere in his study entitled Under Cover shows scripturally how submission to authority is fundamental to the Christian walk in life. In Romans 13:1 2, Paul states Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgement on themselves. The submission to authority that God desires is not to be a submission based on ill will from a heart that is cold and resentful but is to be a whole-hearted acceptance of the direction that the authority over you has nominated. In Psalm 51:16 17 David says, For you do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it ... the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart these O God, You will not despise. It is this attitude of heart that God desires in our submission to His authority. In 1 John 3:4 the Bible declares that Sin is lawlessness where law is the expressed will of the governing authority. John Bevere points out that the only time we are not to obey the directions of the authority over us is when that authority instructs us to do something that is contrary to the written Word of God. It is sobering to realise that when Jesus said he would say to many seeking entrance into the Kingdom of God Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness! (Matthew 7:23) he was speaking to church attendees. We all need to examine our submission to the authorities in our lives husbands over wives, parents over children, pastors over congregations, bosses over employees, governments over populace etc and realise that those authorities are appointed by God. Failure to submit leaves us open to the charge of lawlessness and the consequences are eternal. Bruce Goodall
