I had a discussion with Susan tonight, alluding to the structure of our Local G8 Committee.
As I should have known, she was aware already of the General Committee/Sub-Committee
Structure & was not pleased at being relegated down. She seemed to feel she &Janet Peake
always get shunted this ~ a y .
I did my best, but it was a difficult conversation.
Can you try your luck with her? She clearly feels she will be a second-class Mayor. Perhaps
we have the same problem with Janet Peake too.

Hello Tony and Claude - sorry I could not join you Friday -I did not make it back from my appointment in Toronto in
time
I have just heard (sat 11:00 am) from our PR person that she has been contacted by Rita Smith (working for Tony's
office we understand) from Ottawa that the structure/committee announcement will be at the resort Tuesday at 0900.
Rita was asking for our suggestion on participants. Not having been privy to the meeting on Friday I will have to defer to
the two of you as to appropriate invites and assume she will contact you shortly (if not already done).
We did suggest Tourism reps like Chamber of Commerce and Muskoka Tourism would be good - but did not want to
err in suggestions.
Claude or Tony - please send me an update to your meetings and plans from Friday as soon as you can so I can ensure I
am on the same page.

Great seeing you too. I was happy you had to chance to meet Wendy and the kids. I appreciate
you mentioning me to the Mayor of Huntsville. I am definitely interested but would like to
get a sense of the scope of the responsibilities, time commitments, and expectations. Perhaps
there is a chance to have a call with the Mayor's office and get a sense of the project?
Also as a company we are keen on providing a mini information network within G8 facilities
(and elsewhere) aimed at stakeholders, the media and the public. I assume this would be more
under the watch of Foreign Affairs. I assume it is a bit early re the planning for this but
it would be great if we could make a pitch at the appropriate time.

Today I was pleased to read in the September 1st issue of McLeans that Minister Clement, M.P.
is supporting an investigation of the development of a media centre/ice pad for the 2010 GS
Summit.
We are confident that we can work together to design and build a world class, environmentally
responsible media centre that can transition into a legacy for our community as well as to
fulfill one of the prime objectives of our recently completed Community Master Plan.
Council has begun the process to work with a skilled consulting team to design and build a
world class facility. We look forward to working with the the Minister and the Federal
government to finalize the project plans over the next several months. We anticipate a
construction period of approximately one year, so moving forward in an expeditious manner is
required to meet the timelines of the Summit.

Gerald Cossette, currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Passport Office, has been assigned to take on the
responsibility of heading up the new Summits Management Office. The Office will be established over the
coming months and tasked with the logistical preparations for the G8 Summit to be held in Canada in 2010.
While Mr. Cossette will fully retain his current responsibilities with the Passport Office until mid-2009, he will

I talked with Joseph this morning. Mr.Cossett will be coming to Deerhurst on the night of Sept 11. He would be available
to meet our committee on the morning of Sept 12 at 10 am. I suggest we meet in our Council chambers here to conserve
his travel time. Joseph and I think that the meeting should not be open to the media at this time - although perhaps a
short media serum after the meeting would be appropriate.( my thought)
In reviewing travel distances for everyone on our team it is sixes and halves re Bracebridge so if you are OK with that we

I have been in contact with Alan Graham, Events and Tourism Manager, Economic Development, Perth and Kinross
Council regarding their experience in preparing for and hosting the 2005 G8 Summit. It is one region that has some.
similarities to Muskoka ... and also sharing the English language, they are a valuable comparison. I earlier circulated the
Economic Impact Study to you on the effects of that Summit.
Alan notes: "Perth and Kinross Council (the host local authority) did use every opportunity to enhance the profile of the
area on the back of it including a programme of events in the lead up to the conference. This programme of events and
activities included consular visits to the area for G8 member countries, a tourism seminar, climate change conference,
business fair as well as a range of community activities (many with an international theme). The Summit also coincided
with the launch of a new place brand for Perthshire and this gave added impetus - outputs including a range of marketing
materials (print, DVD etc) which were distributed to press and others at the "Scottish Village" pavilion at Gleneagles.
>From a personal point of view, the event did give a real focus for the area (and Scotland) and demonstrated our
credentials as a major conference destination."
I think this provides some incentive for the Muskoka Leadership Team to "go for it" in determining just how the region will
be readied for the Summit and perceived by all attending (officials, media, campaigners, observers).
I will be holidaying near this region next week and could, if it was of value to you, drop in to continue gathering feedback
on running a successful event.

But your summit organizers should get some good names registered and blocked off. There is a cottage industry of
domain name squatters who try to anticipate what domain name will be useful for you and then register it before you.
It costs them about $10 per name. Once they have it they offer to sell it to you an exorbitant price.
Worst case scenario is that a name that is logical for the summit will get registered. They might even direct visitors to a
bogus or rude site. Life on the Internet. ..
Someone on the summit organizing team (not you) should tell this guy "Thank you very much for your kind offer but we
have our domain names registered alreadyll.
Get your people on this ASAP because the squatters will be registering all the common sense ones and you don't want to
get beaten to the punch.
Ken Banks and I already talked about this. Ken has g8summit.ca registered so no one else can grab it.

No doubt life is busy these days for you.
I want to update you on our proposal for the media centre. We met with our project
management group again yesterday, January 20. All hands have been working very hard on this
project over the last several months. As you will see in the attached letter from our engineer, we
must make a decision on the go ahead for the project by Friday, January 30
th
at the very latest.
You will recall that our initial proposal was conditional upon having a go ahead by January 5. I
understand why that was not met, and I am sure you can understand why we need a solid
answer if we are to guarantee completion in time for the G8. I do not want to set this project up
for failure to deliver on time, as I am sure you don't either.
I am optimistic that we will get a go ahead in the budget next Tuesday. Ifthat is the case, we
will need some form of firm confirmation to allow the Town ofHuntsville to issue the Purchase
Order for the steel by Friday January 30
th
As you may know, the lead time for steel is long
these days as no o n ~ is carrying much inventory due to the tenuous business climate.
On another topic, we expect to hear back from our trip to the Waterloo area within the next
week. I would be happy to share our ideas on that topic with you when you have time.

biggest concern is parking around the Centennial Centre. I will be spending some time with him
tomorrow to show him the MTO building, Jim Rogers new acquisition, Hidden Hitch and Algonquin.
He needs an additional 25,000 sq. feet. He loved the High School and we met with Jan Olsson who
was great to work with.

We had the property appraised at 122k. we offered 145k to be fair. They came back at 165k +60k for two years in
chartwell. Council would likely go to 165 and I told her I was somewhat confident that I could get them that much and
asked her for direction as to how she wanted to proceed. I will forward that email.. She has now overplayed her hand in
my view. I suggest that we now tell her that we don't need the p r o p ~ r t y as we have bought the 11 acres. Her
grandmother can stay there.

We had another public meeting last night with Tim Charlebois and Alphonse put on by the chamber of commerce.
Maybe 75 people tops. Janet and I met with them first at their request. They announced both to us and publicly that
highway 60 will be "controlled access" which means closed to through traffic but open to accredited residents etc. They
then in our closed meeting asked me to pursue improvements to east Browns Road to make it passable for large trucks
and possibly dignitaries. If you have travelled this route you will know if has huge challenges topographically. We would
be in the range of 3m to do that work. They asked how much of the SOm was left - told them I thought it was pretty
much gone. Any thoughts as to how we should proceed if at all?

We had a good meeting with rim charlebois this am.
He says all costs need to go as one complete package to treasury board. Sounds like that
could take a few months by the way he spoke.
By the end of this week the town will have spent all of its operating capital and will be
borrowing to fund operations and capital.
We both know that this has some political dynamite attached to it. Can you give me any
guidance as to how we navigate this issue as we have yet to receive anything from Ottawa.
On a more pleasant note kim says that Arowhon pines is a far better choice for our dinner
together. It is an hour from our house but is worth the drive. If you and Lynn have time we
can do drinks here around four and head out around five or so. Otherwise we could do the
trattoria downtown. Your thoughts?

I am doing a radio show tonight about Ga. Maybe you can clear something up for me. All of the
army opp and RCMP are currently paid by some form of taxation at some level. Is their base
salary included in the big number and if so does that revenue not flow back to the individual
governments as an unplanned revenue?

Thanks for attending yesterday. I have heard lots of positives about the event.
Just wanted to give you a heads up re our status with cash flow re our Contribution Agreement.
We are owed the following:
January 1.79m
February 1.83m
March 1.S1m
April 2.41m
Total 7.57m
In fairness we actually send them the invoice package about 50 days after the month end. ie January invoices are paid
here in February and in mid march sent to the feds. Usually they review and have questions and we clarify. At this point
we have answered all their questions. As well we have sent them requested pictures of the projects, substantial
completion certificates etc.
Any support you can give us to advance this issue would be appreciatedo

Thanks again for everything. I am still pissed off with the Ian Austin article. I have wracked my
brain about his comment about your riding. I think I laughed at his derisive question and went
on to say that all of muskoka and parry sound were part of the local area leadership group. He
then asked if that was your riding boundary and I agreed it was.
what a negative bastard.
On more positive notes kim and I will host a thank you party in mid july. Thinking maybe 12th.
How does that work for you?
Finally kim needs your home address for a personal invitation to send out for labour day
saturday.
