MESSAGE

by Stephanie Felker
It seemed as though the summer would never arrive and now we are in August already and soon the children will be returning to school and fall will again be upon us. We had a very successful and well attended Soccer Wind-Up with over 500 people attending and even the weather held up in the afternoon for the kids activities. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to bring this event to our community. The BRCA was pleased to oer an exciting Eco Art Camp from August 15-19th that will challenge every eco-friendly young artist! Each day started with a morning of sketching outdoors in Bridgeland (weather permitting), which develops fundamental drawing skills at every level. Students worked on multiple art projects including: Paper Mache Animals, Glass Sculpture/Vase Painting, and a large Canvas Painting. All sketching and art projects focused on nature, the environment, and use of natural or re-purposed materials. There was also be a variety of outdoor games and activities oered throughout the week. We also have a skateboard park running for a week in September after school so please be sure to check our website for more information and details on registration! Continued on page 5

BRCA COMMUNITY NEWS

Protecting Riverside Bungalow School and our communitys heritage
As many have no doubt heard, the old Riverside Bungalow School No. 2 is being sold by the Calgary Board of Education. The school was designed by William A. Branton in the Arts & Crafts style, and completed in 1920. A number of residents have expressed to us their concern that it might be knocked down. In response to this possibility, the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association has been advocating for the respectful development of school and the surrounding green space. On July 15th, we sent a letter outlining our concerns to the Calgary Board of Education, Trustee Pat Cochrane, and Alderman Gian-Carlo Carra. On July 27th, a group of us from the BRCA and the Langevin Parents Council met with Alderman Carra to follow-up on the letter. Weve been assured by the CBE that their bidder-evaluation process takes into consideration the proposed use of the building, and that protecting heritage is an important component of that. Still, we intend to remain vigilant. We dont want the school to be knocked down. Going forward, we have created a bit of an ad hoc team comprised of a number of Bridgeland-Riverside residents. We intend to develop a more detailed vision in relation to the green space and what kinds of uses we would like to see in regards to the school building itself. Were also going to continue communicating with the relevant decision-makers. The Riverside Bungalow School is an important part of our communitys architectural and historical identity, and were letting everyone know it. Our eorts to ensure Riverside Bungalow School is developed sensitively is part of a larger community heritage project that we have embarked on. As a community association, were committed to celebrating our heritage and exploring creative options for utilizing the buildings that make our community unique. I believe the basic vision thats beginning to get articulated is sensitive development to create homes, oces and other spaces, while retaining and enhancing our green spaces and local heritage. The next major step will likely be to create a Heritage Sub-Committee under the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association. Well certainly need volunteers for that. If youre interested in getting involved, or have any questions or concerns, please dont hesitate to contact me. Matt Grant,BRCA Communications Director communications@brcacalgary.org

Presidents Message, continued from page 3 Recently the Calgary Board of Education made a decision to put the Riverside bungalow on 711-2nd Avenue NE up for sale and as a community association we want to safeguard the preservation of this historical building for our community. This building has been put on the inventory of the Citys list of buildings with historic value. The BRCA met with Councillor Carra on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 to discuss dierent strategies for historical preservation in Bridgeland. The CA will be leading the charge on this one. Please contact our Planning Director if you would like to help. Mark Stouts contact email is located on the BRCA web site. The community voted in favour of our Multi-Purpose Outdoor Recreation Project and we are in the environmental assessment and Financial and Technical Review Stages. The BRCA is currently receiving quotes for equipment and nalizing the design of the rink/splash pad as well as establishing a working drawing and details. The challenge is waiting for responses this time of year with summer vacation in mid-swing and we hope to have more information for the community and status review in September. I wish everyone a happy end of summer and as always I enjoy hearing from you so please feel free to drop me a line through the Presidents email located on our web page. Events Report
I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who came to have fun and help out at the Family Fun Day in the spring. It turned out to be a great time for everyone involved, so thank you very much for coming out and supporting the event. There are a few programs to watch out for in the near future. As part of the Be Fit for Life Program out of the University of Calgary, our community is participating in a walking challenge starting in October with mapped routes and incentives. There will be more details about this program soon! On October 14th, we are planning an Oktoberfest-themed pub night, so don your nest dirndl and lederhosen! We may even break into a polka or two! We are also planning to host a family Halloween event for the afternoon of October 30th, so watch for details about that. Also in October is the Community Clean-Up. On October 1st, we will be collecting garbage and litter, and will have bins available for garbage drop o at the Bridgeland Community Association Building. Everyone is welcome to lend a hand. BRCA Hall Report
I cant believe that by time you will be reading this summer will be over. Typing this update is my last task before leaving for the August long weekend which is promising to provide us with wonderful weather. The hall was kept hopping over the month of July as we hosted a number of Stampede breakfasts, lunches and suppers. It was fun watching the hall transform for each groups individual theme. I thank everyone for choosing BRCA as the home for their Stampede and summer parties. I have received endless compliments on our building and location. Almost every booking has led to another booking showing us we are doing things right. For the fall, there are a number of weddings, craft shows and business functions. I love working with wedding couples- they are so excited yet nervous. I enjoy being able to be a part of their special day. Speaking of special days, weddings are booking well into 2012. Time to give me a call and choose your date! The hall is also ling up with Christmas parties, so be sure to book your spot for these as well. Art is a popular theme as we host Beacon Hill Arts again on October 22nd. Also, Andrea Lau will be putting on a new art show in late November watch for more details. I am excited to do my holiday shopping at these. Id like to congratulate past and present board members Helen Tam, Carly Duerr and Matt Grant on their summer weddings. And Carla Johnsons second child is due any day. Thank you for tting in time as a board member around such busy personal events. Remember to call me anytime you have questions about Bridgeland or would like to rent the hall. Tracy Moland, Manager BRCA Hall, 403-263-5755 hall@brcacalgary.org

Community Survey
What do you think about your neighbourhood? We want to know. In 2009, the City of Calgary, Community & Neighbourhood Services, launched the Strong Neighbourhood Initiative in Bridgeland-Riverside. The purpose of this initiative is to strengthen neighbourhoods by working in partnership with residents, community associations and other community groups. Since its inception, the goal of the initiative has been to encourage people to become more involved in their neighbourhoods to address common concerns and enhance all aspects of community life. Crucial to this initiative is hearing from residents to better understand their thoughts and feelings about their neighbourhoods. Over the next few months, City of Calgary sta from Community & Neighbourhood Services, along with community volunteers will be asking residents to ll out a survey about their neighbourhood. You may see us at your door, at special events or asking you to ll in an online survey. This information will be anonymous but your opinions are critical to helping us get a picture of your neighbourhood and to understand what is important to you. Are Your Childs Eyes Ready for School?

by Dr. Debbie Luk, BSc(Hons), O.D. and Alison Leung, BSc Vision is an integral part of a childs learning and development. Vision is the fourth most common cause of disability in North America. This is an important statistic as 80% of what children learn comes from their visual processing of the world. Vision problems can sometimes be the root of learning diculties. Fortunately, they are treatable, especially with early detection. Frequently Asked Questions: When should my child have an eye exam? The rst eye exam should be at six months old and yearly thereafter. Alberta Health Care covers childrens annual eye exam until 19 years of age. Albertas Eye See Eye Learn program also covers a pair of spectacles for a child attending kindergarten. How is vision related to learning? Vision is more than just seeing 20/20. Good vision means being able to read eciently, clearly and comfortably for an extended period of time. Good vision is the ability to interpret visual information so we can discriminate similar looking shapes and letters such as b, d, p and q. Furthermore, good vision allows us to visualize information in our minds, enabling us to succeed in reading comprehension, math and abstract concepts. Many children who have diculties in school often have a vision problem. It is important to emphasize that vision is a learned skill, similar to walking and talking. If your child is falling behind in school, vision therapy can help acquire these fundamental visual skills. How can we treat vision problems? Glasses, visual hygiene and/ or vision therapy may be prescribed. Vision therapy is an individualized program of neuroptometric exercises performed both in-oce and at home which will help remediate the aforementioned vision problems. As parents, you play a vital role in your childs development. An annual eye examination can detect risk factors for vision problems. If additional testing and treatments are indicated, then a developmental optometrist will be able to help your child improve visual skills and excel to his/her full potential. Visit www.covd.org or www.oepf.org for more information and nd out whether your child needs vision therapy.

Ward 9 - Councillor Message

The biggest issue on your City Councils plate this fall is the Budget - the challenge of transforming municipal government will begin, or not, based on how we plan to spend our tax dollars over the next three year cycle. The broad themes driving the Neighbourhoods First mission were supported in the feedback we received from the public consultations. The question remains as to whether our civic bureaucracy has taken that input, the fairly clear direction of Council, and the more austere parameters we gave them to plan with over the summer, in the direction I believe is the best expression of our collective ideals, and the best remedy to the variety of issues that confront us. As Calgarians we can transform our City Government and begin to build a prosperously sustainable city of vibrant neighbourhoods - a City that we can actually aord. Further, we can restructure our civic bureaucracy into a civil service specically designed to achieve such ends. Unfortunately, the biggest moves we can make in terms of meaningfully transforming municipal government are maddeningly outside of our direct control. It is only as Albertans in the Provincial Election that we can tell our Government that we need to empower our City with the ability to be the master of its own fate. The prosperity of Calgary is a boon that we must responsibly share with the rest of the Province (and the rest of the Nation) but the $0.08 that trickles back to us from every dollar that gets taxed out of Calgary pockets is far too little to be fair, responsible, or sustainable. I hope every citizen of Ward 9 asks their potential MLAs what they will do to help put the City of Calgary and its community neighbourhoods onto a sustainable path. Its important that our elected representatives hear this message from the general citizenry. I had the opportunity this summer to have breakfast with our new MP, Michelle Rempel. We were also joined, for this initial meeting, by my colleague, Councillor Druh Ferrell (who also shares constituents with Michelle (as does Councillor Gael McLeod who was unable to attend but who will be at successive meetings). We decided that wed like to explore ways of working together and coordinating our representation so as to maximize the eectiveness of the dierent levels of government in delivering services to our citizenry. The upshots are that following the Provincial Election we plan to formally constitute ourselves and meet regularly as City, Provincial, and Federal Representatives of the citizens of your community. Further, weve identied the North Central LRT, and the necessary neighbourhood transformation that will need to accompany this major project, as potentially the single biggest bang for our bucks that we can work together towards. I look forward to engaging with you, and all of the elected representatives of the communities of the North Central LRT, as we work to bring this project forward. I fully expect that by the time you read this my long-anticipated website will nally be live: www.gccarra.ca. Please write in and let us know about your neighbourhood. Were expecting an exciting fall season that begins to see the transformation were committed to achieving in Calgary. Gian-Carlo Carra Calgary City Councillor, Ward 9 September 2011

Bridgeland

...back in the day

by Larry Simon

You might remember that last month, I wrote about Ken Shoults, and his great many accomplishments, mainly in the musical area. On July 10th, 2011, Ken left Calgary to play in Austria with a Calgary Orchestra. Ken had a wonderful trip to Europe, and he did some sightseeing of the musical kind as well, since thats where his interests and talents lie. For example, he toured the house where the great Mozart was born, and also saw the other house where Mozart had lived for seventeen years. He also got to tour the Emperor Maximilions amazing golden roof . The group played in the Mid-European Music Festival. They had a choice of going to the Von Trapp home area, but the group chose to visit the Eagles Nest which was outstanding. For you young uns, the Von Trapp family is the one featured in the famous Julie Andrews movie The Sound of Music from 1965. However, it sounded like the Eagles Nest was a real treat to see, because its a castle built on a mountain, and has an exclusive elevator to carry tourists.

The orchestra played several engagements, and all of the performances were well-received by citizens of both Austria and Germany. Before that trip, and back on our home continent, just a few months ago Ken had also played in Carnegie Hall in New York. For a hometown boy, it is surprising what can happen if you believe in trying, and Ken Shoults is a perfect example of that philosophy. - This regular column running in your Bridges community newsletter is edited by Lori Losowy. Larry spent his formative years in BridgelandRiverside and went on to become a multi-talented artist. He loves to share his stories and memories of the way things were, back in the day.
