About project management

Why project management

...I already know all the ins and outs of my companys business

Everybody uses the term project management these days. Most people would say they ve heard of it and that they know what its all about. Yet project management covers a vast field of knowledge and it involves more than just the haphazard implementation of projects.
he word management is derived from the Latin term, manum agere, which means to lead by the hand. Project is a term that means something thrown forth and it also has Latin roots in the word projectum. So the meaning of project management is to direct and implement something that is currently in progress and will continue into the future. Thats no easy task. Also, there is more to leadership than simply leading the way. A project manager has to understand the projects complexities right from the outset so that he can coordinate and direct it appropriately. Regular checks guarantee that the project will, for the most, run smoothly.

In our globalised world, projects are no longer location-specific, which means that project participants from different countries with different cultures often find themselves on the same team. This only works if the team members activities are efficiently coordinated. Organisations around the world are now coming to realise how important it is to have qualified and competent project managers on their payroll if they want their projects to be effectively and efficiently implemented. All kinds of sectors of industry use project management tools. Correctly understood and applied, they can provide an organisation with a distinct competitive advantage. They help it to save valuable time, they facilitate the smooth implementation of mergers and they enable the faster and more cost-effec-

tive development and marketing of new products. Project management isnt just indispensable to global players and market giants. Small and mediumsized companies can also benefit from consistent and properly applied project management practices. Sometimes, even a small construction site or a new store opening can lead to unforeseen and seemingly insurmountable problems that well-trained project managers know how to avoid. People who manage projects, no matter how big or small, need project management skills because surveys regularly confirm that a projects success or failure depends, most of all, on the competence of the project management personnel.

I urgently recommend anyone with project responsibility to be consistent in learning project management skills and applying them properly.
Ingo Cammans Projects Director IPMA Level A Management Board Multi-project Management Business Unit MAN Utility Vehicles

People who work in complex projects, which means they are involved in project processes, regularly encounter new requirements and problems which can be quite challenging for the project manager. In addition to the general management skills and decision-making routine that they learn over time, project managers have to be persevering individuals who can cope with stress and heavy workloads. They have to retain an overview of all aspects of the project so that they can make sustainable decisions. A project manager doesnt just need the technical know-how to implement the project but also, and very importantly, the right social competences. Soft skills should never be underestimated or neglected. Project management provides a practical range of tools which the project manager can use in a variety of methods and approaches that are essential to a successful project.

Project managers often have to be self-reliant

About Ottmann & Partner

What does Ottmann & Partner do

...and do they have good coffee?

Dont worry. We have good coffee. But that wont be the only thing keeping you awake. Our workshops, coaching, advice and analyses ensure that you derive maximum benefit from your work and that you embark on your next projects refreshed and reinvigorated.

ttmann & Partner was founded in 1992 and it has always been headquartered in Rthenbach an der Pegnitz near Nuremberg. Dr. Ottmann and his trainers provide project management training to the employees of organisations that implement projects. Ottmann & Partners clients profit from the trainers extensive knowledge and experience. They teach course participants about developments in the rapidly changing environment and demonstrate possible solutions. Ottmann & Partner perform project assessments as recommended by GPM Deutsche Ges-

ellschaft fr Projektmanagement and the IPMA International Project Management Association (Project Excellence Model) to assess the status of an organisations project work. This assessment identifies any actions which have to be taken in the project. Ottmann & Partner then discuss the results of the assessment with the relevant manager so that they can jointly define project optimisation measures and provide support in their implementation. As a result, standard project management and project consultation structures are created directly within the organisation.

Ottmann & Partners project management training products and services are supplemented by further project-related services such as project analysis and statements of work, project planning and control, project documentation, project assessment and project coaching. Project coaching gives managers and future managers the opportunity to brush up their knowledge and learn project management skills that are tailored to their organisations specific requirements.

In their courses, Ottmann & Partner make every effort to give participants a hands-on experience of real projects. They dont just involve a trainer standing at the front of the room like a schoolteacher. Participants actually work in small teams on transfer projects over a several week period. Initially, they are taught the theory so that they can use it in the transfer project, which helps to deepen their understanding of it and its practical application. Participants also learn methods of discussion and argumentation in small teams, and then to present the results of their work. The workshops help them to assimilate the material they have learned and they also promote teamwork, which is absolutely indispensable in projects, as well as communicating methodical competence in management and the essential soft skills. In addition to the weekend courses and workshops, Ottmann & Partner provide preparatory courses for IPMA certification. At the end of the courses, participants can take an examination leading to an internationally recognised certificate at their competence level.

Workshop participants got a first-hand experience of project work in the Tower Building project.

We received some excellent advice from Ottmann & Partner. Our project processes are now much more efficient.
Dipl.-Kfm. Alexander Stock Project Management Associate IPMA Level D Management Consultant

Ottmann & Partners project coaching really helped me to advance on a personal level. Its opened up a new perspective for me because I can now structure projects more effectively and I know what things I ought to avoid in future. Sometimes you make mistakes that you arent even aware of making.

All about the IPMA

...everything you always wanted to know but never dared ask

If you already know everything about the IPMA, you can skip the next few pages. If you dont, theyll provide you with quite a lot of interesting information about the association. After all, you may be planning to obtain certification soon, and its good to know who youre getting it from.
ounded in 1965, the IPMA International Project Management Association was originally a discussion group for international project managers, though it soon developed into an organisation with over 60,000 members around the globe. As an umbrella association with over 50 national project management associations as members, the IPMA is responsible for ensuring uniform international standards for project management certification. This is important to ensure standardised project management quality. If you decide to obtain IPMA certification, you know that youll be getting a valuable certificate that is valid all over the world.

Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Projektmanagement, GPM, is the largest professional association for project management in Germany. The GPM is networked with project management associations around the world via the IPMA. It is a non-profit association which has been providing services to science, research, business, politics and associations since 1979. Members in all sectors of industry with all types of organisations benefit from the comprehensive range of services offered by the GPM. As a result of its involvement in the development of international project management standards, the GPM makes an important contribution to the advancement and professionalisation of project management. It also has an award scheme, the German Project Excellence Award, which pays tribute to people who achieve project manage-

ment excellence. It was initiated by Roland Ottmann and implemented as a project for the GPM and IPMA. In addition to the national associations, the IPMA also has certification bodies (PM-Zert). These provide independent certification to project managers in accordance with standard procedures. They are assessed by the IPMA and, as is customary in Germany, they are ISO 9001 certified and accredited. As the GPMs independent certification body, PM-Zert issues various project management certificates. PM-Zert is financially independent from the GPM and it has its own organisational units. PM-Zert uses a team of assessors at each certification level to test certification candidates in accordance with a range of parameters such as knowledge, ability and personality.

Roland Ottmann is author and trainer in the project management scene with an excellent reputation as certification trainer. He has written a textbook that stands apart from conventional ones (...). Its a completely original publication with a clever didactic concept. The textbook is based on a consistent story. (...) The author aims (...) to prepare candidates for PM-Zert certification without them having to process vast quantities of reading material. (...) Although the textbook reads just as fluidly as a novel, the story contains a great deal of important material that is conveyed in a practical and interesting way. (...) Theres no easier way to acquire project management knowledge. Hopefully, other project management authors will follow his lead.
