BRECON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

PASTOR LINDAs LETTER

Behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it. Revelation 3:8 The above quote is said to be Anna Olivers favorite quote from scripture. Anna Oliver and her colleague, Anna Howard Shaw, applied for ordination in the Methodist Church in 1880. Prior to this time, both women had been serving as pastors of churches using licenses to preach, but in 1880, they each decided independently to seek full ordination. Both were denied. Despite 500 percent church growth and strong leadership in the churches they were serving, both women found themselves on the outside of a closed door looking in. When did the church begin ordaining women? In a book entitled When Women Were Priests, reference is made to paintings of women on catacomb walls from the earliest days of the church, before 300 A.D. In these paintings, the women, dressed in traditional clerical robes of the day, are standing with arms outstretched overhead, a typical position of prayer for a person leading worship. Women were leaders in the Christian church from the beginning, starting with Mary Magdalene. In the Methodist Church, women were able to get a license to preach from the early 1800s. This license allowed them to preach in worship, but not to officiate over the sacraments. When Anna Oliver and Anna Howard Shaw sought ordination, their Conference rescinded all womens licenses to preach in retaliation. Undeterred, both Annas continued to lead worship in their congregations. Anna Howard Shaw persisted and eventually received ordination, and both women became active in issues of womens suffrage. Anna Howard Shaw also completed a medical degree after receiving ordination, and she spent many hours working tirelessly among the poor. Women received full clergy rights, in addition to ordination, in 1956 in the Methodist Church. Recently, in 2006, the United Methodist Church celebrated 50 years of full clergy rights for women. Full clergy rights means that women who are ordained can vote at Annual and General Conference on issues and people, the same as their ordained male colleagues. When Anna Oliver was serving her church in Passaic NJ in the late 1800s, her local newspaper was quoted as saying with a woman in the pulpit, the buzzing grows apace! Currently there are 16 female bishops in the United Methodist Church, and approximately 22 percent of clergy are female. Grateful for those who have gone before and opened the door, Pastor Linda

United Methodist Women & Men

September 13, 2011 We had 9 women and 2 men attending the Halloween themed lunch provided by host Harry Schueschner and hostess Elaine Henline. Lora Maddux presented the program on Prayer and Self Denial. The business meeting was called to order by Tom Lillie. He opened with several verses of inspirational scripture and thanked God for the miracle of Doriss recovery from her recent fall. Doris reported that she had received in excess of 40 cards during her recovery and expressed her thanks as well. The August 27 Classic Car Show was a success. We helped serve the lunch and provided the desserts. Terry Haucke gave $100 of the proceeds to the UMW & M. Ruth Sies reported that plans for the upcoming Rummage Sale on September 30th and October 1st are coming along. Tents will be set up on Tuesday of that week, tables on Wednesday and pricing on Thursday. She is still in need of helpers for those wishing to participate. Proceeds go to the operation of Samaritans Closet. Tom brought up an idea of reaching out to seniors that need a place for activity in their life. He asked for our group to provide the food for this. We voted in favor of his request. Discussion followed as to what day of the week we would offer this and a Friday was suggested. Pastor Linda passed out a flyer about a meeting at Stewart School on September 22nd concerning partnering with the businesses in our community. It starts at 9 AM and includes breakfast.
th

We were reminded of the Crafters Pumpkin Party on October 15th. Everything pumpkin will be the theme, from crafts to food items. Next meeting will be October 11 at noon for a pot luck lunch, with Dorothy Robertson and Joyce Huff as hostesses. Bob Moak will have the program. All are invited to enjoy a great meal and Bob always has an interesting program.

Samaritans Closet Activities

During the first 10 days of September, there have been 14 families who have come in for food. Keeping the shelves stocked with food is a big issue at this time. We have had an increase in requests for food and are always appreciative of donations. The proceeds of the Rummage Sale will help to fill this need. Private donations are always appreciated, too. We wish to thank all those who helped to make the Rummage Sale a success. Many large items (furniture, etc) were donated for this cause. Volunteers filled the jobs of setup, selling and clean-up. Special donations of preparing and serving lunch added to the excitement. We thank the Boy Scouts for setting up two large tents and thank Paul for the blue tent. A complete report will appear in the November Newsletter. Meanwhile, at the Closet, we are sorting and removing summer clothing and bringing winter clothing down from storage. Its quite a job and extra volunteers are always appreciated. Call Dawn Federle at 398-8189 to offer your help. Someone is needed on the 1st Thursday of the month to work with Joyce Reed from 9:00 - 1:00. Nancy Young is her partner, but has been unable to work for several months. We hope you will soon be well, Nancy. We welcome back Mickey Giuliani after recovery from her injury. Mickey volunteers on the 3rd Thursday with Angela Kern and were glad to have her back. As we move into the beautiful month of October, remember: Autumn is the years last, loveliest smile. Ruth Sies

Boy Scouts
The Scouts have had a busy summer. In July, 32 Scouts and 10 adults spent a week at Camp Chief Logan in south central Ohio. For 9 of these Scouts, it was their first time at a camp like this. They spent the week learning the basic outdoor Scout skills. For the others they spent the week working on various merit badges, earning 90 merit badges, 17 rank advancements and 3 special awards. The Troop came in second in the camps weekly intertroop skill award race. We have also been camping in August, but this time it was a family campout. September, we camped at Woodland Trail Camp in Camden, OH. We will have our fall Court of Honor when all the awards from this past summer will be formally presented. Week of Sept. 9th, one of our scouts, Joseph Kaufman Jr., was elected Chief of the Dan Beard Council Order of the Arrow Lodge. As Chief he is the senior Youth of the Lodge and also the only youth member of the Executive Committee of Dan Beard Council.
