Ghost Stories The Grey Man-Pawley's Island Perhaps the most frequently told ghost story in Georgetown County is that of the Grey Man. According to numerous documented accounts, he appears on the beach at Pawleys Island prior to hurricanes. Everyone who has seen the Grey Man says that he warns them to leave the island. Residents who are wise enough to heed the Grey Man's warning always find their homes undamaged after the storm. Encounters with the Grey Man have taken place before every major hurricane that has struck the island for more than a hundred years. The Grey Man is unquestionably a permanent resident of Pawleys Island, but what causes this kind spirit to warn unsuspecting residents of approaching danger? The answer may lie in one of three different accounts that exist about the origin of the Grey Man. According to one legend, a young woman was walking the windswept, lonely beach not far from her parent's Pawleys Island home. She was in mourning for her childhood sweetheart who had recently died in a tragic accident on the island. Her love had returned to Georgetown by ship after an absence of several months. He was so eager to see his beloved fiancee that, rather than wasting one more precious moment away from her, he took a shortcut across previously untraveled marshland. With his faithful manservant riding a short distance behind, the eager fellow and his horse came to a sudden stop and began to sink rapidly into a patch of deadly quicksand. His manservant watched in horror, unable to help his young master, as the young man and his horse disappeared into the mire. When the young woman heard of her finance's tragic death, she was heartbroken. After the funeral, she took to walking the stretch of beach where she and her beau used to stroll in happier times. This particular day was windier than most, but it suited her recent mood. She was alone with her sadness in the whipping wind, with the ocean crashing by her side. Suddenly, a figure appeared ahead. As she walked closer, the young woman could have sworn it was her finance. With no fear, she walked toward him. "Leave the island at once," he said. "You are in danger. Leave the island!" Then he disappeared. The young lady hurried home to tell her father and mother about the strange, unsettling experience. Upon hearing their daughter's strange story, her parents immediately began making plans to leave Pawleys Island for their inland home. They did not know what danger they were fleeing, but they did know that their daughter was a sensible person and not prone to flights of fancy. The family left Pawleys Island before dawn the following morning. That night, as they lay sleeping in the safety of their inland home, a fierce hurricane ravaged Pawleys Island. The hurricane destroyed most of the homes on Pawleys Island, but the home of the young woman's family was undamaged. Bingham's Light-Location:Community of Bingham in Dillon County Don't really know the history of the story too much, i've heard different histories of it. But the one i heard was about this black man named Bill Bingham. Now other stories say his name was John Bingham. He was walking down these railroad tracks out near the swamps of Reedy Creek Springs. Ive heard diferent stories of why he walked these tracks, one was that he was a murderer and this is where he placed the bodies, one was he was walking that way to go home like it was a short cut or something. He walked with a lanteren. Story says that the train came and ran over him. Different stories say his head was cut off, some say he just got killed. And now he is still walking the tracks today

looking for his head, and the other story is that he is trying to get to his home. I never could find out the true history on it like most ghost tales. But i will tell you tht it is really a ghost/spirit there. So here's my story of me,my friends and my cousins that use to go on ghost hunts. This is a very popular story in my neck of the woods, the story hangs around high schools around here. Because thats where i heard about it. So we got a litle history on it and planed our road trip. We live in Darlington and Chesterfield county. We got the directions from our friends that has been before. i will fill you on them later. The story begins with us getting out of our cars and trucks. We had to take about three vehicles cos there was about 10-13 of us going. We pulled into the old muddy road not far from Interstate-95. We had to get out and walk, because of the rain that destroyed the road. It has mud holes that are very deep, you would have to walk it out a good mile to get to it. Because of mud, holes and dirt humps that are piled up so no one will enter with vehicles. So we walked on til we got to the cross roads. Now the rail road tracks are not there anymore, but you can tell that was once some there. My cousin had to instruct us on what to do cos he was there once before. We all stood there and started screaming out his name "Bill Bingham come out!!!come out Bingham! After about one minute we saw a faint glow in front of the way we were facing. It moved closer and closer towards us.Then it would vanish, then reappear again. If you cursed at it,it would change colors from white,to red to green. So i come up with the idea of us walking towards it where it would appear. As five of us walked we heard the others scream out "it's behind you!"I turned around and it was floating between our group. Then it vanished, then reappeared in front of us,i mean like face to face! I could see a dark black shadow behind the light. Could not make out a body nor a face, just a shadow. I could not feel any heat off the light, just coldness. It didn't have a shine nor a brightness to it. Just a glow to it. After standing there for just like a minute or so, one of my cousins couldnt take the fear any longer, so we started to run back towards the cross roads and it followed us.then vanished again. Another time we went it was about 8 of us,we walked the mile then got to the cross roads and made the call to Bingham. It came out and started to float fast towards us, our friends that was there for the first time got scared and started to run,the mud was so bad they kept on slipping and falling. Me and my cousin that has been there before just stood there and said to eachother "we gotta see whats with this light" as it got like 30 feet from us the fear ran through my blood,i couldnt stand there any longer. I could like feel that it was mad,i felt a bad vibe from it. Because it was changing colors. The way it was floating it surprised me, it was like a lanteren swaying back in forth. So we started runing, we slipped and fell so many times, ever time i looked back at was like 10 feet from us still floating fast. It passed the cross roads and went about 100 yds from chasing us. It just vanished then reappeared in front of us. It just sat there floating in one place then after a few seconds it just vanished. I've thought it over and over trying to figure out if it was a prank or not. Me and a friend came back to the cross roads back in the day light hours we scanned the area for prints or cords/ropes. But none were found. There's no way a human can run through that mud we ran through without falling, and we never heard any sounds while it floated. What we saw there both times is what other people saw and told us. My conclusion of it is that is really the ghost of Bingham. Lights of Ravenel On a stretch of road 20 miles south of Charleston an accident happened on night. Three teenage boys were run over and killed by a log truck. The three boys were buried at the Baptist Church cemetery located on the same road. It is said that if you go to the church and knock on the door 3 times and say, ? want to see the light??d repeat this process 3 times. Three lights will appear to you where the boys were killed. Devil's Stomping Ground In the county of Lancaster, near hwy. 521, there is an area similar to a crop circle, as it is a circular area in which there is no life, no plant growth, and not so much as an ant or earthworm can be found within the circle. The story is that this area served as an execution site for the Waxaw and Catawba Indians. Evil spirits are said to frequently visit the site to collect the condemned souls of the executed. Or either it is where the devil comes to think of evil to bring on to mankind. The consistent feature of the site is an overwhelming feeling of dread, despair, and nausea to anyone who stand in the circle and takes a minute to clear their minds. Test on the soil have confirmed that its is sterile and that this may be the oldest crop circle in the world. It is said that if you put objects in the circle, such as sticks or rocks, that by morning the will be gone or moved to the outside of the circle. Forty feet in diameter with plants growing to the edge, it is said that animals will not cross or even enter into the circle. Cry Baby Bridge-Union County. Right before you get to Rose Hill Plantation, there is an old bridge with rusted steel frames at the top. Legend has it that, if you park on the bridge and cut off your car, that you can hear a baby crying and then see the mother looking for it. One day in the 1950? woman threw her baby off the bridge in spite of her husband. Now, you can see her looking for the baby at midnight. Hound of Goshen The five-mile stretch of the old Buncombe Road, which runs between the church cemetery and Goshen Hill Plantation, is said to be haunted by the ghost of a dog. It is said that the ghost of a very white dog haunts this road and frightens anyone who comes through there. The story dates back to the late 1800's this road was onetime a stagecoach route between Ebenezer Church in Maybinton Township and Goshen Hill in Union County. Lights at the Burial Ground There is an old Indian Burial Ground not far from the town of Catfish, on Hwy. 16. It is said that if you go down the road about 3 miles and turn off in the field you will find an old dirt road with a chain blocking the drive, this is river bend road. People say that they have seen lights down their and that weird things happen to their vehicles when the lights come near. Badwell Cemetery In McCormick ,S.C. is a cemetery that is very old (several hundred years) it is the place of burial for French Heugonaut settlers. The cemetery is surrounded by old stone blocks, and the gate was iron with the grim reaper on the front. There has been numerous sightings of a troll walking the perimeter. The gate is no longer on the entrance, due to theft. There has been many strange occurrences at the site by young and old alike. Lands End Lights Here are some pictures of my travles to Beaufort to see the Lands End lights. Just outside of Frogmore, on lands end road there have been many sightings of a ball of fire and light floating along this stretch of road. Many people say that it is the ghost of a civil war solder that was beheaded, and is for ever in search of his head. Others say that it is from the ghost of some run away slaves that were caught and hung from one of the large oak trees that line this road. Another story states that a bus wrecked on this road in the late 1940's killing the driver and a couple passengers. which ever story one picks many still see the light every year. I yet have been one, but plan on more trips to Lands End to try, and to get more pictures and video. The only pictures that came out are so from the Chapel of Ease ruins. I will post more picks of lands end when i get them. Summerville Lights The story goes that a woman had a husband that was a night conductor for the Summerville railroad company. Every night around midnight you could see her, waiting by the tracks with her husband lunch and a lantern.. waiting for him to stop and eat. One night, he never showed up, and she was told that his train had derailed and he was beheaded in the accident. Although they buried his remains, she never accepted the fact that her husband was gone, and so she went to the tracks at midnight with her lantern and walked up and down, waiting for him. People of course began to think she was crazy, but she continued this nightly ritual until her own death. Mysteriously, the lights have never stopped coming though. It is said that if you go to the tracks just before midnight, you can hear the normal sounds of the night, crickets chirping, frogs croaking, the breeze blowing, etc. but for some odd reason, and this has been the case for every person who has seen the light. at midnight, the sounds suddenly cease. As if a presence has quieted them momentarily. Then you can see it, usually its far off, a light and nothing else coming your way. If you stick around for the light to get closer, it is said that the light will chase you. Hit and Run Outside the town of Clinton, in a community called Lydia Mill, there is a cemetery set back off the main road. Upon driving down the one-lane road into the cemetery, a person suddenly appears in the middle of the road so close to the car that there is no time to stop, swerve, or miss hitting the person in any way. After hitting the person, and the driver getting out to check on the person, there is no one to be found there. Old Montorose Cemetery The Montorose Babtist Church was originally located on top of this hill about five miles out of Florence and all that remains is the cemetery. The church was allegedly burned to the ground in the early 1900?Most of the gravestones are gone and all are broken and worn. One account of the haunting was that while taking rubbings of the gravestones when the sound of laughter was heard. A little boy standing in front of one of the tombstones was seen laughing. As the person got near for a closer look, the little boy laughed again and then disappeared. The name on the grave marker was Joseph Wallace born 1822 and died in the 183---, the rest of the date was broken off the stone.

This was sent in from vistor Ashely: I have also been to Montrose Graveyard.. I have been 2 or 3 times. it is getting hard to drive a car up there now. if i could make a suggestion that is to take an SUV or truck. but the first time we went we pulled up near the mass gravestone and got out of our car. we read the stone and was informed that it is the one stone that now represtents all that was ever buried there. you can see where people have gone up there and thrown bottles and such at the stone to intice things. we stayed around there for about 5-10 minutes and then made our way back off the hill. and gosh yes is it a hill! at first you dont think you are getting that high, but we came to realize it the second trip. the second trip we had 2 cars. well a car and truck. the truck decieded to ride up and then back down like my friend and i had done the previous time but my friend and i this time decided to circle the site. you could see a small road from where others had done so. this time we saw the left over gravestones. there are about 3 or 4 tops still up but in really bad shape. and the dates are old, like of the 1800's as you posted in your decription. they are broken and hard to read. after seeing the dates on there i decided to look out towards the road and yeah we were up there on that hill. i got this fear all of a sudden that something was going to happen like maybe we would see something and it try to push our car off the hill, so we left. but both times we never really saw anything. i dont know if it is because we have enough respect not to trach the place with bottles to intice things or what but again if someone decides to try out this place good luck.. and always be careful. Prospect Church There is an old church located on the Prospect Road. The name of the Church is Prospect Church. They say that on certain full moon nights, you can park your vehicle at the very last park on the right side of the church and you can see a man moving the curtains as if in struggle from the last window of the second story. This was sent in from vistor Ashely: i have been to Prospect Church... I live in Florence and it is found in/around Hartsville I believe it was. When you turn onto Prospect Road some directions tell you a certain amount of miles (most all say that same amount) but actually they are usually wrong. Just ride down the road until you come across the Church on the right. I dont recall there being a sign up anymore. But they have put up a flood or street light which ever you want to call it. It is kind of right off to the side of the church and makes difficult to see in the window. Maybe some people of the church heard about the story and didnt want curious people coming there all the time to see. my friend and i sat there for like 5 minutes looking at that window on a full moon night and couldnt see anything. the glare from the light did not make things easier. but the curtains are still up and some what open. anyone who decides to check this site out good luck in seeing something. (i think the light really messes things up.) The Bride Of West End-Newberry, S.C The story goes that on certain nights you can see the dreary form of a lady in a wedding dress sitting in the trees, standing by her grave, or roaming the fields next to the cemetery. She is said to be waiting on her star-crossed lover to come and pick her up to go to their wedding The Swamp Girl On the long stretch of road, between Sumter and Columbia, there is a bridge that is said to be haunted by a beautiful young woman. She was supposedly killed in an accident when the Wateree River Bridge was first built. Since that day she has been seen at the bridge where concerned motorist will offer her a ride. She accepts and gets in the car; she then tells how she trying to get to Columbia to visit her sick mother that lives on Pickens Street. Once the car reaches the Columbia side of the bridge the girl vanishes from the car. One couple went to the address that the young woman give them, to find her sister that told them that the young girl had died on that bridge and has reappeared on the anniversary of her death many time before. Haunted House Just outside a small community called Healing Springs, there is an old house on top a hill. This house was built on top of a couple graves. People have said to see lights inside the house, even though no power is run in the house. One personal account of the haunting goes as follows...Upon driving up to the house, we got an Erie feeling. Large oak trees with low hanging branches that are covered in Spanish moss surround the house. Three friends and me entered the house through the front door. We explored the house, room by room and then exited through the side door. While sitting in the car in the driveway, we started hearing a tapping noise on the vechile. The sound was random and moved al around us. After about 5 min. of hearing this, one of my friends that was in the back, started yelling to look at the house. There was a low glowing light in the back room that was slowly moving to the front. The light would only fill the room that it was in, not casting light to the others even though they were joined with open door ways. We left before the light reached the front were we were at. We stopped down the road and all talked to make sure we saw the same thing. Hagoods Mill Cemetery Outside of Barnwell on Hwy. 64 there is an old cemetery located way back in the woods. A walk of about 1-mile you reach the old rod iron gate of the cemetery. The gravestones are in a circle with the oldest staring in the center and going out. Many stories of green, blue, yellow, etc. lights have been seen floating around in the woods around this cemetery. They have also been said to shoot strait up and then back down to just disappear. There was also one story of a skeleton of a dog running across a side road near this graveyard. The Phantom Horseman of Columbia Sometime in the Spring of 1914, a strange occurrence happened. On the corner of Bull and Blanding Streets, a shadowy figure of a horseman appeared in the sky above the large oak trees. Observers described the image as a horse and rider of heroic size. The details of the figure were clearly visible down to the saddle and the reins. As the people looked on, the horse reared up and appeared to want to take off on some journey. The next day the news of the sighting spread. A crowd gathered on the corner to stare at the treetops. They waited patiently for the horseman to show himself again. The crowd was not disappointed. Above the trees the figure appeared again. Many in the crowd were scared that the white horseman was one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse (a biblical figure foretelling the end of the world). Others believed the image to be the ghost of stately General Wade Hampton, who was there to warn of the upcoming world war. The Third Eye Man The "Third Eye Man" was first spotted on November 12, 1949, on the campus of the University of South Carolina. According to school records, a strange man dressed in bright silver was sighted opening "a manhole cover on the corner of Sumter and Green Streets, directly opposite of the historic Longstreet Theatre." At 10:43 p.m., two male students watched as this man entered the sewer portal, and diligently pulled the manhole cover into its proper position. One of the students, Christopher Nichols (class of 1953), wrote for the Gamecock and immediately spread the news of this "Sewer man" -- as he was called in the article. After a few weeks, any interest in the "sewer man" died down. Almost six months later, on April 7, 1950, this "sewer man" was spotted again. A university police officer on patrol came across two mutilated chickens behind Longstreet Theatre. Feathers and chicken parts were strewed all over the loading dock of Longstreet. Believing that this mess was left by fraternity students or some other pranksters, the officer walked back to his car to report the scene. After calling into the station, the officer returned to the loading dock only to discover a silver man huddled over the chicken pieces. Immediately, the officer turned his flashlight on this man who looked up at the cop. In the beam of the light, the officer could make out a very disturbing face, grotesque in color and shape, and in the middle of this man's forehead, a third eye! It wasn't a large eye, but nevertheless, there was a third eye starring back at the cop! The policeman retreated from the scene and called in back-ups. When other officers arrived on the scene, there was nothing left on the loading dock except a few scattered feathers and bones. Of course, the cop who witnessed this "third eye man" was in hysterics, and was never able to convince the other officers of what he saw. In the late 1960's, the "catacombs" or underground tunnels at the University, were a favorite place for students. These tunnels connect most of the University. One night in early October, a group of fraternity guys decided to take three pledges down to the tunnels for a challenge. Entering the tunnels from the basement of Gambrell, the group of guys headed west towards the horseshoe. As they rounded the first corner, they were met by a "crippled looking man dressed all in silver" (according to police reports). This bizarre looking man charged at the students with a lead pipe, and suddenly the frat boys realized that this was no prank. One of the pledges, Matthew Tabor, was knocked to the ground by the creature, and suffered "minor cuts and minor shock." Two of the older boys immediately went to the police department, and that evening, the first "third eye man-hunt" took place. After hours of searching the tunnels, the police came up with nothing. However, they did take precautions by sealing off most of the entrances to the catacombs, and by declaring the tunnels off-limit to any person, student, or faculty member. According to one of the maintenance men who still works at the University today, "we don't use the tunnels unless it is absolutely necessary." There have been several sightings in the late 80's and early 90's, though most were dismissed by the University Police force. Those who are adventurous enough to climb down into the tunnels risk being suspended from school. Students WILL find a way into the catacombs from time to time, but there is always the possibility that they will come face-to-face with the ominous third eye man. Airport High School-Columbia, South Carolina

The original part of this high school is said to be haunted by the ghost of George Pair, the schools first principal. It is said that Mr. Pair frequently appears in the hall wearing a dark suit with a red tie. His wife who still teaches at the school says that George has told her he just wishes to protect the students. He closes the doors of teachers that work late. He follows students and teachers to their cars after late night activities. It is said that one may hear Mr. Pairs footsteps walking through the hall though the halls were carpeted many years ago. It is said that this activity was caught on video by a group of adventurous teachers and students in 1994. Phantom Hitchhiker-Columbia, South Carolina On US 76, it is said that an old, ghostly hitchhiker appears at the entrance of the bridge-usually on rainy or foggy nights. The lady, who appears to be in distress, is usually offered help by most. The apparition, who is said to be extremely lifelike, gets into the back seat and tells the driver she is en route to Columbia to visit her mother. Giving them an address on Pickens Street, she continues to converse with the driver before becoming silent. By that time, the car is across the river, the woman has disappeared. It is said that in the 1940s, a woman was killed in the spot that is now the beginning of the bridge, while trying to get to Columbia to see her mother. Thomas Rose House-Charleston, South Carolina Dr. Ladd traveled from Rhode Island to seek his fortune in South Carolina many years ago. While taking up residence in this house, he got in an argument with another man, so they decided to settle the disagreement with a duel. The next morning, Dr. Ladd had decided that a duel was not the solution, so he fired his gun into the air. The other man, who was still quite angry from the previous day, shot Dr. Ladds kneecaps out. After three weeks of agony, he died of gangrene. He is often reported to be seen in the house, especially in times of distress. The Battery-Charleston, South Carolina In a place known for Southern hospitality, its no wonder that some residents would want to linger. But the residents of some Charleston, South Carolina haunts seem unwilling to ever let go Even after death. Charlestons Battery, also known as White Point Gardens, sits on the edge of the meeting place of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. Long before the area became a scenic retreat and peaceful park, both Fort Broughton (established around 1735) and later Fort Wilkins occupied what was then known as White or Oyster Point, named for the eerie white and skeletal piles of bleached oyster shells covering the peninsulas point. The Battery has been a place of conflict since its colonial beginnings. Frequented by pirates and later a key location as Charleston tried to defend itself from the Unions invasion during the Civil War, Charlestons Battery has seen enough death to explain it being haunted. Charlestons Most Haunted Inn Behind the wrought iron gates of No. 20, known more popularly as the Battery Carriage House Inn, ghosts have continued on well beyond their expected stays. Built in 1843, the battery Carriage House is part of a larger, private home, but visitors who dare overnight are welcomed by the B&Bs staff. Heavy footsteps are heard on stairways where no one is seen walking. Strange glowing masses appear, change shape and fade away and cell phones act oddly in Room 3 of the Inn. Shutters open and close on their own and some visitors report seeing faces on one of the Inns beautiful mirrors. Beginning in the early 1990s, reports started coming in about more oddities. People report feeling like they were being watched in the middle of the night, and perhaps most disturbing of all, some visitors claim to have seen a headless torso dressed in layers of clothing, overcoat on top haunting Room 8. The strange headless torso is thought to be either the remnants of a colonial pirate or a man from the Civil War period. His overcoat is of a coarse material, which, depending on additional details could belong to a man of either historical period. Speculation rages over the figures identity and people get an uneasy feeling when he appears. He is possibly one of the many pirates and near-do-wells that met their end dancing the hempen jig in 1718 when Charleston tried and hanged nearly 50 pirates. Charleston was overrun by pirates and was one of Blackbeards favorite ports. Anne Cormac (later Anne Bonny, the famous female pirate) grew up in the area and met her husband, pirate James Bonny in Charleston. It was from Charleston that Blackbeard kidnapped Council member Samuel Wragg and his young son, holding them hostage until his crew received necessary medicines. Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate met his end at the end of a hangmans noose after his pleas were ignored. He was buried on White Point Shoal (now the Battery Garden); although most pirates were dumped unceremoniously into the ocean. Is it possible Bonnet still roams the area, displaced and angry, threatening in a raspy, breathy way because his final words were useless? The other frequent ghostly visitor is the gentleman ghost. It is believed that the gentleman ghost is the spirit of a well-bred well-educated young man whose family owned the house decades ago. A college student with a supposedly sensitive nature, the young gentleman jumped to his death, leaving his motivation a mystery to friends and family alike. Now he seems to frequent Room 10 of the Inn, ghosting by like little more than a shadow sometimes with the scent of fresh soap as if hes just bathed. Occasionally he is rumored to take a liking to certain members of the opposite sex, ghosting nearby them and giving the sensation he is lying beside them, his arm gently around them. Whether you visit Charlestons Battery for its history or the pleasant Southern hospitality and authentic warmth, be aware you may not be aloneeven in your most private moments!
