    Chorley’s have been instructed to sell items from the estate of the late Melville Watts, OBE JP on Thursday 6th October 2011. Following the death of Melville Watts in the summer of 2010, the Gloucestershire newspapers were full of tributes and obituaries to a remarkable and generous Lydney man. He was a tireless fundraiser and, in helping to raise more than a million pounds for Lydney Hospital, its future being secured for several generations. Other organisations benefited from his fundraising enthusiasm and, as well as his home town being the centre of much of his vibrant work, he enjoyed many other activities and his love for the Forest of Dean and its local affairs was always apparent.

    Chorleys have been instructed to sell items from the estate of the late Melville Watts, OBE JP on Thursday 6th October 2011. Following the death of Melville Watts in the summer of 2010, the Gloucestershire newspapers were full of tributes and obituaries to a remarkable and generous Lydney man. He was a tireless fundraiser and, in helping to raise more than a million pounds for Lydney Hospital, its future being secured for several generations. Other organisations benefited from his fundraising enthusiasm and, as well as his home town being the centre of much of his vibrant work, he enjoyed many other activities and his love for the Forest of Dean and its local affairs was always apparent. One of Melville Watts joys was the country house auction where he acquired all sorts of interesting lots. Many were unseen by members of his family as they were discreetly hidden away in his den at Priors Lodge. When Chorleys were instructed to sell items from the estate, the secret purchases soon came to light, some still bearing the original lot number. A comprehensive collection of Gloucestershire books including Lot 125, Atkyns famous book, The Ancient and Present State of Glocestershire, 2nd edition estimated between 2,000-3,000; Lot 126, Rudders A New History of Gloucestershire, estimate 250-350, Lot 149, Camdens Britannia (est 400-600) and many books on the Forest of Dean will be eagerly sought after. One of the most eye-catching sections in the sale will be his collection of model boats including a Napoleonic prisoner-of-war bone model of a man-o-war, Lot 508) estimated to sail away between 2,000-3,000. Other highlights include Lot 496, a fully rigged model fishing boat (est 1,200-1,500), a smaller gaff-rigged boat, Lot 495,
