Longtime Optometrist Dr. Karen Rosen Opens Own Practice In South County
After serving patients in South County for more than 25 years, optometrist Dr. Karen Rosen opened her own practice in 2011, providing primary eye care and optical solutions to her patients. I have confidence in my sense of style to provide attractive quality eyewear at reasonable prices, Dr. Rosen said. I also intend to offer eyewear that lets my patients express themselves with some flair and individuality. As an optometrist, Rosen is trained in treating common eye diseases such as pink eye, glaucoma, allergies and dry eye syndrome. There is now an instrument that measures tears and determines whether a patient has significant dry eye. With new treatments, we can now help patients in ways we couldnt before, she said. Over the years, the profession has become much more technical with computers and lasers that make the eye exam easier, more efficient and of higher quality. Lenses and frames have become more attractive and provide better vision than in the past. Rosen gets the greatest satisfaction from having patients bring in their friends and families to see her. I really feel like one of the family, she said. I also enjoy successfully fitting patients with contact lenses when they have previously had problems with either comfort or vision.

Esse Health Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine Offers Convenient Office Hours For Busy Kids And Parents!
The Esse Health Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine office at 9930 Watson Road knows that kids (and their parents) are busy. Thats why its flexible scheduling and expanded office hours are invaluable in making healthcare more accessible and convenient. The office hours are Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 11:30 am. At the Esse Health Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine Office on Watson Road there are a total of five pediatricians and two nurse practitioners. Dr. John Madden is one of those five pediatricians and as parent of three children himself, Dr. Madden knows the value of having flexible scheduling for appointments. My passion comes from being a parent myself. Keeping kids healthy means working with parents and schedules to make sure everyone gets the time they need to have concerns addressed and to understand their childs health, growth, development and behavior. There is nothing more satisfying than helping to provide the tools a child needs to succeed, said Dr. Madden. Dr. Madden is accepting new patients.

Lori Chalupny (17) is considered the finest womens player developed in St. Louis. She starred for the St. Louis Athletica during the clubs brief tenure and captained the U.S. womens National Team.
Fenton was named in honor of Dennis P. Long. Long refers to soccer as Gods game. Raised on a steady diet of watching and playing soccer in south St. Louis, Long went to work as an office boy at Anheuser-Busch (A-B) in 1953. Taking night classes at Washington University, he worked his way up to become chief operating officer of the worlds largest brewery before leaving the company in 1987. While at A-B, Long put the full weight of the brewery behind soccer in St. Louis. For that, Lange devotes a special profile in his book to Long, just as he does for great players such as Keough, McBride and Chalupny. Denny is a crucial figure in the history of St. Louis and U.S. soccer, said Lange. Its been said that A-Bs support of the U.S. Soccer Federation kept the federation solvent in the late 1980s. He also was the driving force behind the construction of the Soccer Park in Fenton.
Had he continued as the No. 2 person at Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis would have had a team in Major League Soccer right from the start and eventually would have had a soccer-specific stadium, noted Lange. There has been no one since Denny Long with the passion and the power to do that in St. Louis. These days, Long and his son, Patrick, own and operate Sams Steakhouse near Grants Farm in South County. Long continues to be a fan of youth soccer in St. Louis. In his book, Lange laments that St. Louis can no longer lay claim as the nations soccer capital. For example, Kansas City has surpassed St. Louis in soccer and recently opened a $200 million soccer stadium. Lange offers advice on how to return St. Louis as a dominant force in U.S. soccer. Past soccer greats many who live in our own back yard are certainly an inspiration for the future of St. Louis soccer.
