MICROSOFT SHAREPOINT

1. INTRODUCTION
Microsoft SharePoint is a web application platform developed by Microsoft. It is designed as a centralized replacement for multiple web applications and supports various combinations of enterprise website requirements. It is typically associated with web content management and document management systems. SharePoint's multi-purpose platform allows for managing and provisioning of intranet portals, extranets and websites, document management and file management, collaboration spaces, social networking tools, enterprise search, business intelligence tooling, process/information integration, and third-party developed solutions. SharePoint can also be used as a web application development platform. SharePoint is designed to be highly scalable. It is capable of supporting multiple organizations on a single 'server farm'. Microsoft provides SharePoint at no cost, sells premium editions with additional integration and functionality, and also provides SharePoint as a cloud computing solution as part of Microsoft's Business Productivity Online Standard Suite and Office 365. The product is also sold as a cloud solution by local third-party vendors. SharePoint provides various methods for customization and configuration of web areas, all of which have granular governance configurations. Beyond basic page-editing, file-storing and custom design capabilities, one of the more prevalent forms of configuration is the ability to install third-party customizations called 'web parts. SharePoint is the business collaboration platform that enables you to connect and empower people through formal and informal business communities, within the enterprise and beyond, and to manage content effectively throughout the information lifecycle. The consolidation of collaboration solutions onto SharePoint 2010 makes it possible to cut costs through lower training costs, increased IT productivity and cost-effective maintenance, all within a governable and compliant platform. Whether deployed onpremise or as hosted services, these integrated capabilities are enhanced by Search technologies and make it possible to rapidly respond to business needs based on datadriven business insight and faster solutions development and deployment.

2. HISTORY
SharePoint has its roots as early as the mid-1990s. But most people had their first experience with SharePoint with the 2007 release. The first official branded SharePoint technologies were released in 2001: SharePoint Portal Server 2001.This product was positioned as a portal product that helped business aggregate corporate information through navigation and search. In 2003, SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 were born. SharePoint Server 2003 very quickly gained momentum and was widely adopted in the enterprise as an intranet solution.

Later in 2004, Microsoft developed Spark. But spark addressed only some customer requirements. Customers really asked for was one integrated platform for Web Content Management, portal and collaboration.

In October 2007 Microsoft released Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.SharePoint 2007 was built of Windows Server, Sql Server, and the .NET framework. However SharePoint 2007 heavily leveraged the .NET FRAMEWORK (ASP.NET 2.0), which was more mature and had rich functionality such as master pages and web parts. SP 2007 had tremendous business success. It changed the way customers and partners think about business collaboration. It delivered an integrated platform that featured collaboration, portal, search, content, management, business forms and business intelligence technologies.

In the past few years, Microsoft has continued innovating and making strategic acquisitions to deliver the best value to customers and partners. On May 12, 2010, Microsoft launched SharePoint 2010.It is designed to deliver the most comprehensive and best productivity experience available today.

3. SHAREPOINT 2010
SharePoint 2010 comes in 2 flavors, SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation. SharePoint Server 2010 is the more feature rich version. SharePoint Foundation is the platform that serves as the solid base for the server version. SharePoint server can be thought of as the superset of the functionality found with SharePoint Foundation. One way to sum up the difference between the two options is that SharePoint Foundation offers fewer out-of-the-box parts, list templates, and site templates. The most notable difference is that SharePoint Foundation is a free download whereas SharePoint Server 2010 is licensed from Microsoft.

Moving from SharePoint Foundation 2010 to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 extends SharePoint Foundation 2010 to provide a full-featured business collaboration platform that scales from the enterprise to the Web. This enables businesses to meet growing demands for internal and external collaboration and meet the fast-changing requirements of the new world of businessknowledge transfer, support for the next-generation workforce, virtual teams, open innovation, collaboration with partners and customers, and morewith a single, extensible, centrally managed enterprise platform. Whether deployed on-premise or as hosted services, SharePoint Server 2010 helps companies cut costs with a unified infrastructure while simplifying how people find and share information across boundaries. 14.APPLICATIONS
Intranet portal A SharePoint intranet portal is a way to centralize access to enterprise information and applications on a corporate network. It is a tool that helps a company manage its data, applications, and information easier. This has organizational benefits such as increased employee engagement, centralizing process management, reducing new staff on-boarding costs, and providing tacit knowledge capture. Enterprise content and document management SharePoint is often used to store and track electronic documents or images of paper documents. It is usually also capable of keeping track of the different versions created by different users. In addition to being a platform for digital record management systems that meet government and industry compliance standards, SharePoint also provides the benefit of a central location for storing and working on documents, which can significantly reduce emails and duplicated work in an organization. Extranet sites SharePoint can be used to provide password-protected, web-facing access to people outside an organization. Organizations often use functionality like this to integrate third parties into supply chains or business processes. Internet sites SharePoint can be used to manage a public website. Due to the complex nature and hardware requirements of SharePoint, it is not typically considered for this purpose unless there is a scalability requirement or an integration with extranet/intranet facilities.

CONCLUSION
In this small report, I have tried to summarize the research work which span over last 10 years and which continue to discover new bounds in the thrust of more improvements in the Microsoft SharePoint. SharePoint helps to quickly create and manage contents in your organization, collaborates in new ways through the social capabilities, search makes it easier to find relevant content, streamline business processes, combine and visualize information.More and more organizations worldwide are realizing the business benefits of using Microsoft SharePoint as their platform for enterprise collaboration. SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint Server 2010 update the core SharePoint technologies to meet the rapidly changing needs of businesses operating in a more cost-conscious and competitive environment. Not only are they making it easy for employees to collaborate using familiar social computing tools, but they are doing so without placing an incremental burden on their IT organization. This is because SharePoint Foundation 2010 and SharePoint 2010 can be managed using the same administration tools and IT skills as the Microsoft productivity tools the organization already owns.
