ED 321 Lesson Plan # 5 Prior to writing your lesson plan, you must answer the following questions: 1.

What are the discipline issues or challenges in this classroom? a. My lessons have usually happened on Fridays, when the classes are regrouped for flexible Fridays. Because of this, I have usually done review lessons prior to tests. A challenge for me has been to control the undercurrent in the classroom so that all are able to participate. Some strategies that I have tried in the past are raising my voice, using a whisper, and pausing. 2. What discipline principles/strategies have I learned that would help me be more effective in dealing with these issues? a. Learning Love and Logic has had a big impact on me. I have started wanting to incorporate more one liners into my teaching, but seem to only remember them after the fact. I have started incorporating Love and Logic Parenting Magic and it has helped me gain confidence in my ability to use them in the classroom. Knowing that my Cooperating Teacher would not be at school for this lesson, I considered it to be the perfect opportunity to counter some more social behavior.

Wisconsin Model Academic Standards, Grade 8 Mathematics F.b.1. Solve single-variable inequalities using symbols.

Understanding(s)

U Essential Question(s)

Students will understand how to put application problems into a verbal model then into an inequality statement.

Can you translate the application problem into a verbal model? Can you use the verbal model to generate a solvable inequality statement?

Students will know

Students will be able to

How to translate the application problem into a verbal model. How to use the verbal model to generate a solvable inequality statement.

Translate the application problem into a verbal model. Use the verbal model to generate a solvable inequality statement.

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Assessment will be informal. Before students leave the classroom, they will need to work through an application problem showing the following components: 1. Verbal Model 2. Inequality Statement 3. Solution 4. Interpretation of Solution Students will complete this on a piece of paper, instead of an index card, to ensure they have all 1

the space that they need. Stage 3 Learning Plan L

Introduction:
Warm Up Activity to activate background knowledge. The students will work through a multi-step inequality, recalling the steps needed to solve them. We will go through the solution process together.

Procedures:
I will open the lesson with another comic strip. This one shows that sometimes everyone gets frustrated with math, but we can think of other ways to get to a solution. There are a series of questions that we will work through involving planning a charity event, video game high scores and magazine production. For each question, we will set-up a verbal model, derive the inequality statement, solve and interpret.

Closure:
Remind the students that applications will also answer the question What am I ever going to do with this? Assign homework. They will need to continue working on their college project, as certain components are due next week.

**This lesson was specifically designed to be a short lesson due to anticipated chattiness with substitute teacher present.**
