Message from The Chairperson, Board of Governors

We strive to impart management education to prepare business leaders and entrepreneurs to stand up to global competition.
Heir to a glorious tradition in learning and scholarship, India today is modern, young and focused in reinventing itself to take its rightful place among the comity of nations. Demographically speaking, every second Indian is less than 25 years old today. The vast energy of such a youthful nation is finding creative outlets in all fields be it education, business, commerce, defence, sports, governance etc. This is the context in which we have to view management education in our country. There is an insatiable thirst for knowledge, skills and entrepreneurship among the youth of India, as can be witnessed in the explosion of graduate and post-graduate education, academic and professional. Their needs can be satisfied only by quality educational institutions with requisite standards in every respect. Delivering anything less will be unjust and unfair to the aspirations of thousands of young hopefuls. We, at the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), are acutely conscious of our responsibilities in this regard and have been striving to render quality management education with values, to those seeking managerial skills for the past 21 years. Our overarching emphasis has been on Excellence with Values, which in fact happens to be BIMTECHs credo. Successive evaluations by independent third party specialists like N.B.A., The Nielsen Co., Cfore etc have attested to the fact, that overall we are in the 15-16 rank range all-India, near the top among private b-schools in Northern India and again in the top echelons when it comes to foreign university collaborations and timely updation of curriculum. When the conduct of business has been called into question on grounds of greed and amorality in the context of the recent economic meltdown, our emphasis on values, a proud legacy of the Birla family, is well absorbed by BIMTECH students and stands them in good stead in their careers, which has taken quite a few of them to the levels of top management. We have ensured that the BIMTECH students can find complete selfexpression in the institutes ambience and can aim for the stars. We are therefore rendering all help to them to make their dreams come true. It gives me great pleasure to commend BIMTECH to the youth of India.

Jayashree Mohta

From the Desk of Director

I welcome you on behalf of the Birla Institute of Management Technology and thank you for showing your interest in us. In an era that has come to become the epitome of competition, B-schools face the very pressures that they prepare their graduates for. The pressures of performance and quality apply to B-schools too, like never before, and the skilful handling of these very pressures makes the Birla Institute stand out in the crowd. "Excellence with Values" is our guiding principle which is reflected in every activity of the Institute. The founders and patrons, Syt. B.K. Birla and Dr. (Smt.) Sarala Birla, have always emphasised adherence to excellence, ethics and values in their businesses as well as in educational institutions established by them. We take care to inculcate these values among our students while shaping and sharpening their mindsets by the academic rigor of our programmes. Due emphasis is placed on exposing our students to real-life situations of the corporate world and facilitating interaction with the best minds in the industry and with those who have achieved their mission with strong ethical undertones. Students are always encouraged to develop an entrepreneurial spirit in their personality so that they spot opportunities, mobilise resources and develop innovative solutions to the critical problems of today. BIMTECH provides a transformational experience to its students who are expected to maintain the highest standard of personal integrity, professional commitment and business ethics. Life at the campus is a rare social experience that develops a sense of belongingness to the community among students and makes cross-cultural interaction easier in their future lives. It is a community that continues to grow the bond even when the days of campus life are over. Looking forward to welcoming you to the Institute.

Academics, Learning and Pedagogy

Learning starts with the study group formation of the students for the duration of their stay on the campus. The formation of the group is self-done on the basis of the chemistry of social life, culture, academic background and work experience. They share ideas, thoughts, culture, and personal experiences. This makes their stay enriching. Despite a tight schedule, they are able to manage their time to enjoy, go on adventure trips and develop life-long relationships. BIMTECH gives high priority to inviting industry mentors for making business education more relevant. The class room guidance, with a combination of internal professors and external industry experts, prepares a candidate on the fundamentals and industry practices simultaneously.

International and National Alliances

With the emerging market tag of India, there are many opportunities explored for better management and business models. The new and changing environment has called for knowledge and skill sets sensitized to global environment, cultural issues and multiple skills. This has been very well coordinated and attempted by European Union in a very organized manner. However, India has been doing it on personal capability mostly. BIMTECH is one of the few business schools which started the student exchange programme as an integral part of the education and exposure. The office also intervenes in the quality expansion through research sharing and faculty exchange with some of the foreign universities. It has signed agreements with many universities around the world and explores more in the western world.

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (International Business)

Gradual integration of Indian economy with the global economy is now an irreversible process. This calls for professionals who are well equipped to handle the new demands of the industry in leading their businesses towards this direction successfully. The International Business Programme in BIMTECH strives to prepare the students for a successful and rewarding career in the field of international business and groom them effectively so that they eventually develop into credible international business professionals. The course content and the activities have been designed to help the students understand the complexities of international business operations and equip them with the knowledge base to deal with these complexities. The students are also trained on how to identify the existing opportunities in the area of international business and explore them.

Globalization of business is the order of the day. In financial services, pharmaceuticals, beverages, motorcars and popular music industries, Indian firms - large and small - are winning internationally. So you may want to study international business to understand the development in the field of international business, the challenges in managing international businesses, and the different approaches to accomplish them. Or you may want to study international business because employers know that their futures depend on their success in the world economy, and so they need to recruit those who will make that happen. The myriad faces of international business are fascinating. This is a vehicle which brings together different strands of business done by different people in different countries, coming from different conceptual structures and bringing with them different intellectual containers. You will not only study international business, you will experience it. The Centre for International Business and Policy has been striving to be a leader in providing students and business managers with the skills to understand foreign cultures and business practices and to perceive and grasp overseas marketing and investment opportunities, to overcome language barriers, and to deal effectively with foreign governments and international institutions.

The course enables the participants to understand the working of the global economies and offers a hands-on approach to global management challenges faced by companies, in a global geopolitical environment. The course includes classroom as well as experiential components. It will emphasize interaction with working executives and result-oriented approaches. The emphasis is to create a programme which will not only have a global appeal but also make sure that the students are grounded in their basics.

India stands at an inflection point. The last 15 years have given India the confidence that it can "play in the major league". India must put its development on a different trajectory. India @ 75 is an approach to this very desirable end. India can do this if we start with imagination, courage, passion, empathy for fellow Indians across the socio-economic spectrum and humility. Analysis of the past will not get us there. India has the opportunity to build a socially equitable, diverse culture that can be the beacon to the whole world. This is the opportunity.

Retail industry has emerged as a sunrise sector and is expected to make a remarkable contribution towards overall economic growth during the next decade-in the same way as contributed by the knowledge-based economy in the recent past. Entry of the leading business houses into the organized retail sector and the well-known international brands waiting to get green signal to enter the field indicate growth potentialities of the sector. Huge gap between demand for and supply of the trained managers has intensified competition for the available managerial talents within the industry.

The Centre for Retail is an initiative to groom qualified work force and educate professionals to play a leading role in promotion of the retail sector in India. Since its inception in 2002 it has been striving to create a new generation of smart retail professionals of international caliber. The Centre aims at enhancing employability of students with the most modern techniques and practices in retailing, as seen and experienced around the world. The approach to classroom education is interactive and based on the three principles of shared learning , namely, explore, participate and learn. Over the years, the Centre has also emerged as a knowledge centre in the field of retail management. In fact, its considerably dependable resource bank has become a ready reference for a sizeable section of the Indian retail industry. E-newsletters and journals, brought out by the Centre, on the business initiatives and evolution of retail are acknowledged within the fraternity and outside.

The Institute has entered into a tie-up arrangement with the following Indian as well as International retail institutions so as to get access to the best resources available in retailing and merchandising. The Centre for Retail was launched by BIMTECH in 2002, in order to supply quality managers, capable of shouldering responsibilities in a highly competitive retail marketing environment. Our students get apprised of not just all aspects related to retail marketing, but also get in-depth exposure to core management areas such as Marketing Management, Financial Accounting, Organization Behaviour, Quantitative Techniques and Business Economics. This ensures that they would be in a position to shoulder senior managerial responsibilities in future. I am sure our students will always remember BIMTECH as a stepping stone in their future endeavours.

I can attest personally to the high level of intellectual endowment of the faculty and the students of BIMTECH, as LOMA had done a very challenging joint project with BIMTECH in association with USAID and Bearing Point. Our association with BIMTECH is an ongoing one.
