UBC Grade 11/12 Problems 1996

1. Solve the inequality: 2 x |3x + 1|. 2. In hockey, a goalies GAA (goals against average) is the average number of goals allowed per game. Kirk Hersh has a GAA of 2.74. In his next three games he lets in a total of three goals and his GAA drops to 2.54. After these three games how many games has Kirk played? For the rest of the season, Kirk maintains a GAA of 1.50. He ends the season with an overall GAA of 2.00. How many more games did Kirk play? 3. A woman cycles to work alongside a railroad track at 6 km/h. Every day she arrives at a crossing at the same time as the daily train. One day she is 50 minutes later than usual in arriving at the crossing and consequently the punctual train overtakes her 6 km before the crossing. What is the speed of the train? 4. Determine all values of x and y so that xy, x/y, x y are all equal. 5. Solve for x : x = 1+ 1+ 1 + .... .

6. Solve for x : x = 1 + 1+

1 1 1+ 1 1 + ...

7. Let x1 = a, x2 = b, a2 + b2 = 0, and let xn = xn1 + xn2 for n = 3, 4, ... xn Let X = limn . Determine the value of X. Does the answer xn1 depend on the values of a and b? You may assume that the limit exists.

8. AB is a diameter of a semicircle, CD is perpendicular to AB, AD = 1, AC = BD = x. Find x.

9. P A is a string 9 cm long tacked to vertex A of an equilateral triangle with perimeter 9 cm. The string is kept taut and wrapped around the triangle in a clockwise direction. What is the area swept out by the string?

10. The area between the graphs of y = 1 and y = x2 is 4/3. Find the area between the graphs of y = x2 and x = y 2 . 11. American radio stations use three or four letters for their call letters. The rst letter must be a W or a K and suppose no letter is allowed to be repeated in the call letters of a station. Find the maximum number of American radio stations with such call letters.

12. A dart board has a radius of 7 cm. Each region of the board is 2 cm wide except for the bulls eye which has a radius of 1 cm. If three darts are thrown at random and all hit the board, what is the probability of getting a total score of 150?

13. Suppose F (x) = 1 if x > 0, F (0) = 0, and F (x) = F (x). Evaluate G(x) = F (x + 1) F (x 1) for all values of x. 14. For the graph of y = f (x) shown, prove that if f (x) = f ( x ) + f (z), 2 then z < x . 2

15. Let tan A = x, tan B = y, tan C = z, 0 < A < , 0 < B < , 0 < C < 2 2 . Suppose that A = B + C. 2 (a) If y = x/2, nd z as a function of x. (b) Find all x such that 2z = y = x/2. 16. Suppose that f (x) satises the equation f (x) = f x x +f 2 +2 2 x 2x3 2x3 . Show how with x > 0. Also suppose that f (x) 4x 3 3 to calculate f (1) to two decimal places. [One can show that f (1) = .]
