What Is A Flower?

All plants produce flowers for the same reason: to make seeds so
another plant can grow.

A flower consists of stalk, which terminally becomes swollen to

form thalamus. This thalamus bears the floral organ sepals(green),
petals (coloured other than green), stamens (microsporophylls),
and carpels (megasporophylls). Sepals and petals constitute the
non-essential organs and simply help in attracting the insects for
pollination, Stamens represent the male reproductive organs of a
flower, A stamen consists of a terminal, swollen fertile part-anther
and stalk-like part-filament. Internally an another contains four
pollen-sacs in which pollen grains are produced. The anther splits
to release the pollen grains. Carpel represents the female
reproductive part-stigma, the middle tubular part-style and the
basal swollen part-ovary contains one or m ore whitish oval
structures called ovules. Ovule contains egg in the embryo sac.
Four basic parts of a Flower
A flower is the part of the plant that makes the seeds. The main
parts of a flower are the carpels and stamens. These parts are
often found in the center of the flower. There are egg cells in the
carpel and pollen cells in the stamen. All flowers have four basic
parts: sepals, petals, carpels and stamen. Different flowers have
different numbers
Peduncle: The stalk of a flower.

Receptacle: The part of a flower stalk where the parts of the

flower are attached.

Sepal: The outer parts of the flower (often green and leaflike) that

enclose a developing bud.

Petal: The parts of a flower that are often conspicuously colored.

Stamen: The pollen producing part of a flower, usually with a

slender filament supporting the anther.

Anther: The part of the stamen where pollen is produced.

Pistil: The ovule producing part of a flower. The ovary often

supports a long style, topped by a stigma. The mature ovary is a

fruit, and the mature ovule is a seed.

Stigma: The part of the pistil where pollen germinates.
Ovary: The enlarged basal portion of the pistil where ovules are

produced.
Fill in the Blanks

1. A flower is usually made up of f____ parts which are

arranged in r_____ inside each other.
2. The sepal is the outermost ring. It pr_____ the flower when it
was in bud.
3. The petals of a plant are often b_______ c______ to attract
in_____.
4. The stamens are the m____ parts of the plant which produce
the yellow, dust-like p_____.
5. The carpel is the f_____ part of the plant which produces the
f______ once p________ has taken place.
6. A flower can be pollinated either by in_____ or by w_______.
7. When a flower is pollinated by in_____ the in_____ go to
feed on the n_____ of the flower. They brush against the
s______ and collect the p_______. Then they brush against
the c______ of the same or different flower and pass on the
pollen that way.
8. When a flower is pollinated by w_______ the w_______
blows the pollen. In this case the flowers usually have small
or non-existent petals.
9. The pollen reaches the carpel at the place called the
s______. It travels down the s______ until it reaches the
o_______ where a f_______ is formed.
