STUDENT INFORMATION: Series/Parallel Resistive Circuits utilize properties of both Series Resistive Circuits and Parallel Resistive Circuits. In this lesson you are going to learn about Series/Parallel Resistive Circuits. You will accomplish this by learning the steps used to solve for parameters in series/parallel circuits. This lesson relates to Voltage Dividers, Current Dividers, Potentiometers, and Rheostats. It is also an accumulation of every lesson that has been covered in BEC thus far. These principles relate to most of the other annexes in BEC. STUDENT HANDOUT PRESENTATION: I. Series Parallel Circuits: A series/parallel circuit is any circuit made up of a combination of series and parallel sections. The entire circuit appears as a single resistance to the power supply. Series rules still apply to the series portions of the circuit, and parallel rules still apply to the parallel branches. In order to solve for parameters in this type of circuit, steps must be accomplished in a specific order: A. Step One: Work out all parallel sections. Reduce the parallel sections to a single equivalent resistive value. This value is referred to as REQ. B. Step Two: Redraw the circuit. As the parallel branches are reduced to an equivalent resistance, the circuit should be redrawn as a series circuit with the equivalent values (REQs) in place of the parallel branches. Eventually, the circuit can be redrawn with all resistors reduced to a single resistance. C. Step Three: Find total current. After reducing the circuit to a single resistive value (RT), the next requirement is to solve for total current (IT). D. Step Four: Solve for series voltage drops. Since current is common in series, Ohm's Law can be used to solve for all series voltage drops, including that of the equivalent resistances.

E. Step Five: Solve for parallel currents. Since voltage is common in parallel, the series equivalent voltage drops are used to calculate the current through each of the parallel branches. Kirchhoff's Current Law shows that the sum of the individual branch currents is equal to the total series current. F. Step Six: Solve for Power. Solve for power using the individual values of currents and voltages for all the resistors in the circuit.
