CONTINUOUS WRITING THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONTINUOUS WRITING Narrative Essay A narrative is a story with a sequence of connected events.

It could be about a personal experience or an imagined event or events. Narrative essays are told from a defined point of view, often the author's, so there is feeling as well as specific and often sensory details provided to get the reader involved in the elements and sequence of the story. Lets look at some typical questions: 1. Write a story about a man who returns to his home after many years. 2. The day I lost my temper. 3. Write a story ending with, I shall never forget this day for the rest of my life. 4. Write about an occasion when you got into trouble. 5. Write a story beginning with, I could not believe my eyes?.

Descriptive Essay Descriptive essay is when you are required to portray people, places, things, moments or experiences vividly so that the reader can create a mental picture of what is being described. In other words, you should be able to paint pictures using words. For instance, if you are describing a person, the reader should be able to visualise in his minds eye the person you are describing. If you are describing a place, then the reader should be able to see the place with his very eyes. Not everyone can handle a descriptive essay. You need to be competent in the language and you need an eye for detail. Besides, you should be able to appeal to the readers senses and evoke his emotions. Examples: 1) Describe a day when you were very sad. 2) A person who has influenced you the most

Argumentative Essay Argumentative essay is much more challenging as it makes great demands on your ability to put ideas and opinions across convincingly. To attempt this type of essay, you must be able to operate at a higher level in terms of thought, language and style. Choose this essay type only if you are able to write sound and compelling arguments using clear and logical reasoning. Flawed or faulty arguments and lack of conviction are some of the weaknesses of a poorly written essay. Examples: 1) Co-curricular activities are a waste of time. Do you agree? 2) Large families make happy families.

Expository Essay Some books and websites define them as "how to" essays, while others give a long and confusing definition that seems to include every possible essay type out there. Expository essays are simply essays that explain something with facts, as opposed to opinion. Samples of expository essays include: Essays that described how to do something. Essays that analyze events, ideas, objects, or written works. Essays that describe a process.

Reflective Essay This type of essay is aimed to reflect a personal event or experience of the author. The main condition is that it has to be a certain personal experience on which the author has his very own perception. This experience or even is revealed in the essay in order to demonstrate its importance for understanding social relations and the essence of people. It may be said that a reflective essay possess the traits of a philosophical analysis of different experiences we face in our everyday life. This type of essay reveals the creativity of the students and their ability to change standard perception to a unique one, to their own unique perception of social issues.
