A. Personal Statement I started working as a biology intern for the Bureau of Reclamation as a high school student, and then continued to work there while pursuing an undergraduate degree in biology. As part of my job I helped with environmental compliance and work pertaining to the endangered species act. Though I enjoyed working for the government, over time and with more research experience I came to the realization that a career in molecular biology research was something I wanted to pursue. During my third year as an undergraduate I had an amazing opportunity to go to Crdoba, Argentina and participate in collaborative research between BYU and universities throughout South America, where the overarching goal was to study speciation of the Patagonia region. This international research experience provided me with important skills in collaborative research and cross-cultural communication that will help me work successfully with others to achieve my research goals. After returning from Argentina, I soon took off again to work at the University of Utah for the summer in Mario Cappechis lab. As an undergraduate with little research experience, I was very honored that a Nobel Laureate would give me a research opportunity in his lab. The summer I spent in the Capecchi lab was my first full-time molecular biology research experience and it helped me confirm my decision to leave a full-time biology position with the Bureau of Reclamation and go to graduate school to study molecular biology.
