God thought to choose a people for the work of saving men.

THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL IN EGYPT

The children of Israel were numerous and

strong. A king who had not known Joseph
said thus:

-The people of Israel are older and

stronger than us.-

Then, the Egyptians enslaved the children of

Israel. They screamed and moaned. Their
cries reached God.
God remembered the covenant made with
Abraham.

THE CALL OF MOSES

Moses was grazing cattle on Horeb, the
mountain of God.
God made himself present to him in
the flame of fire in the middle of a bush.
-Moses, Moses, I am the
God of your father,
Abraham and Jacob.!-

-I have seen the pain of my

people in Egypt, I have heard
their groans!-

-I have come down to free

them and take them to
good land!-

The king of Egypt laughed at Moses, believing

that Moses' God was a false God, like those of
Egypt, who had no power.

THE PASSAGE OF THE RED SEA

God guided his people. He went ahead of them; by

day, in a column of cloud;
at night, in a column of fire.

Seeing that the people had left Egypt, the king and his
courtiers became angry.
They followed the children of Israel and overtook
them.
They were camped by the sea, the people of Israel
were filled with fear.

Moses raised his hand toward the sea.

God made the waters part.
The Israelites passed through the middle of the sea,
on dry land.

- Raise your hand towards the

sea.-
Moses raised his hand toward the
sea and the waters returned to their
normal state, leaving the Egyptians in
the middle and hiding them in the
waters.

The Egyptians followed them and entered behind them but God said:

Speak in the assembly of the children of Israel,

and say to them: The Israelites spoke a language

Israelites celebrated the Passover festival. Thus they remembered the

They remembered God's passage punishing the Egyptians; of the
passage of the Israelites through the Red Sea and through the desert,
with the help of God.

God said:

"Choose a lamb and offer it as a sacrifice to God at sunset.

"With his blood you will mark the setting of the house; and that same night

THE STRENGTH OF GOD IN DAVID

THE MONARCHY IN THE PEOPLE OF GOD

BOOK 1
of Samuel
BOOK 2

All Israel knew that Samuel was a prophet of God. God

spoke his words to Samuel.
Samuel was the leader of Israel while he lived.

THE FIRST KING

When Samuel was old, the greatest of Israel came to see him.
- You are old, give us a king.
Samuel gathered all the families of Israel.
He cast lots. It was Saul the son of Kish.

Saul reigned, but he was not obedient to God. God chose David as king.

God said to Samuel:

-Stop complaining about Saúl.
Go see lsaí, the one who lives in
Bethlehem.
Among his children is the king.

lsaí brought his seven sons over. -

God has not chosen them. Do you
have any other children? - The
smallest. He is the one who takes
care of the flock.
-Go look for it. I hope so. When the
little one arrived , God said: That's
the one! Samuel poured the
perfumed oil over it. From that day,
the strength of God was in David.

THE PSALMS OR SONGS

The psalms are prayers that were prayed singing.

Today it is also customary to pray with songs.

The most beautiful of those songs were written in the book of psalms.
What we don't know is the music; only that they played instruments similar to

A prophet wrote to encourage those who were

THE BIBLE IS THE BOOK OF

GOD'S WORD

Bible is a word from the Greek language that means BOOK.

The Bible is the sum of many books, some long and others very short.

The Bible is not a book like any other, with many more or less interesting stories. It is the Book
of the word of God to communicate life to us.

The Bible is the word of God because in it God makes himself known to us and tells us what
he wants from us, throughout history, in the words, in the speeches of the prophets and with
the life and words of Jesus and his followers.

THE BIBLE HAS TWO PARTS:

OLD TESTAMENT and NEW TESTAMENT

OLD TESTAMENT OR OLD COVENANT

In the Old Testament we see God's action to free a people whom he wants to make his
own.
God intervenes in history through his prophets in charge of transmitting his word.
In this first part of the Bible it tells how God also makes a pact with men.

3
1st Year Children - Topic
10
He always sends them something. " If you do this, I will defend you, I will save you, I
will be your God... " You will also see how men get tired of fulfilling what God commands them
and do not fulfill the pact they had made with him...

Thus, this first part of the Bible is

called the Old Covenant or Old
Testament, which means the same
thing.

The other part of the Bible is:

NEW TESTAMENT OR NEW

COVENANT

The main part of the New Testament are the books in which Jesus' apostles wrote what
they had seen and heard about him.

He shows us all his love and power in Jesus and tells them that those who want to be
saved must only do one thing: believe ; that is, trust in Jesus. If you trust Jesus you will be
like him, you will be his same body, you will have his same life and God will love you as he
loves Jesus.
The word Gospel means Good News.

Search the New Testament for the names of its different books and write them in the box .

Discuss with your catechesis companions:
* Why did Miguel, in the end, remain thoughtful?
Imagine that you were not convinced by your mother's response.
* What answer would you give to their question: "Why are there children who are not
happy"?
Think about a time when you encountered someone who needed help and you helped
them.
* Who was he, what was wrong with him, what did you do, why...?

God has created all men.

He made us look like him.
He created us in his image and likeness.

That God created us "in his image and likeness" means that he made us similar to
him. And to look like him he gave us life and intelligence, the desire to live and be happy.

God made us to love and to think,

to be free and work,
to be brothers and share.
To always live happily with him.

Men are capable of understanding , loving and being free because we resemble
God. God is the Father of all men. Men and women are brothers, like the children of the
same parents.
Everyone, everyone, everyone... we are equal.

God wants us to live as his children and, therefore, as brothers.

This means that all men and women must love and help each other as siblings love
and help each other. Only then can we be happy.

MEN ARE CHILDREN OF GOD

BAPTISM GIVES US THE SPIRIT OF GOD

That is, their strength, their help, their encouragement... so they can always
continue to be their children.

We are a people that walks, and together walking we can reach another city that never

We are a people that walks, that marches through the world looking for another city.
We are wandering pilgrims in search of a destination, a destination of unity. We will

ends, without pain or sadness: city of eternity.
