DETERGENT THEORY
A detergent is a compound capable of removing, dispersing and suspending dirt from the surface
being cleaned.

Detergents are surfactants, i.e. they lower the surface tension of water. Detergents have a
molecular structure with a water-soluble part (hydrophilic) and an oil-soluble part (hydrophobic).
When the surfactant is very hydrophilic, the product is a good wetting agent with little detergent
power; if, on the contrary, the surfactant has a large hydrophobic part, we have a good
emulsifier with little detergent activity.

A surfactant with good detergent capacity is one that has a good balance between its hydrophilic
and hydrophobic parts.

The detergent activity of the surfactant is influenced by temperature, addition of acids, alkalis,
solvents, salts and gums.

Surfactants can be classified on the basis of their molecular structure as:

Anionic Cationic Nonionic Nonionic (Neutral)

AUXILIARY SUBSTANCES

What is commonly known as a finished product called detergent is a mixture of one or more
surfactants with detergent properties, plus diluents and auxiliary substances such as those
described below:

SOLVENTS

They are used together with surfactants for degreasing, some of the most commonly used are
naphtha, benzine, carbon tetrachloride, butyl cellosolve, ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and pine
oil, among others.

ACIDS

For the cleaning of food processing machines, surfactants, usually nonionic, are combined with
acids such as phosphoric, oxalic, citric and gluconic acids.

ALCALIS

They impart sufficient alkalinity to saponify fats of vegetable or animal origin; the most
commonly used are caustic soda, potassium soda, ammonia and its derivatives, among others.

SUSPENSION AGENTS

They help to keep dirt particles suspended and dispersed, preventing their redeposition on the
surface being cleaned. The most common are carboxymethyl cellulose and bentonite.

INHIBITORS

They protect the surfaces being cleaned from being attacked by the detergent solution,
commonly sodium metasilicate is used.

OPTICAL BRIGHTENERS

They brighten and whiten fabrics by a light-reflecting effect when exposed to the sun, e.g.
diestearyl biphenyl disulfonate derivatives.

KIDNAPPERS

They are used to eliminate the hardness of the water and thus increase the foam. Traditionally,
phosphates (sodium tripolyphosphate) have been used for this purpose, but given their negative
ecological effects, it has been decided to eliminate them and replace them with EDTA.

ENZYMES

Manual for the elaboration of household chemicals products 3

Compiled by Mr. Quim
Widely used to remove food debris, an amylase and protease system is normally used.

DILUENT

In the case of liquid detergents, the diluent is water, for powder detergents it is sodium sulfate.

BLACK SHOE CREAM

(Yield: 180 g)
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
• 3 tablespoons of yellow wax (approx. 45 g)
• 3 tablespoons of stearic acid (approx. 45 g)
• 2 tablespoons of carnauba wax (approx. 15 g)
• 2 tablespoons of yellow petroleum jelly or simple petroleum jelly (approx. 20 g)
(ingredients
above mentioned are available in large pharmacies).
• 1 cup of turpentine (equivalent to 250ml, available in tlapalerías)
• ½ teaspoon of black synthetic dye "aniline" (available at
large pharmacies, or tlapalerías)

• pewter saucepan with ½ liter capacity
• stainless steel soup spoon
• flat plastic container preferably with screw cap (reuse your old shoe cream containers)
Preparation
In the ½ liter container we pour the yellow wax, the carnauba wax, the stearic acid, and the
petroleum jelly. We leaven in a bain-marie, and leave it until it melts, approximately 15
minutes. To facilitate the mixing of all the ingredients, stir with a spoon until a liquid consistency
is obtained.
Then remove from the water bath and away from the stove slowly add the turpentine.
Finally, add the colorant and spoon it into the mixture (if you notice that the color is not intense
enough, add more until you obtain an intense color).
Packaging and preservation
Pour the contents into the plastic container and allow to cool until the product hardens. Do not
forget to label it with the name of the product. Keep tightly closed, in a dry place.
Expiration

Manual for the elaboration of household chemicals products 8

Compiled by Mr. Quim
As long as your cream is kept closed after each application, it will remain in good condition for
more than one year. If it dries out due to misuse, repeat steps 2 and 3 of the preparation
procedure.
Interesting fact
Wax is a solid substance secreted by bees to form honeycomb cells. Due to its composition, the
cream provides the leather of your shoes with an excellent shine, which is caused by the
presence of fatty acids among others, which allows it to be lubricated.
Benefit
By producing your product yourself, you will save 50% compared to a commercial product. You
will also be able to choose the fragrance of your preference (we recommend adding the mirbana
fragrance) for your shoes, with the different fragrances available on the market.
Instructions for use
Before applying the cream, first remove the dust from your shoes with a cloth, then apply
evenly, and finally, with a dry cloth rub to provide shine (if you notice that the cream did not
cover any scratches on your shoes, you can apply again). General recommendations
It is advisable to work in a ventilated place (open the windows of your kitchen to let air in),
otherwise you may suffer eye and throat irritation.
When washing your shoe cream containers, it is recommended that you soak them in hot soapy
water and clean them with paper towels to remove wax residues. If you notice that the
container still has a black color, add water with a little chlorine bleach and let it soak for the
necessary time.
If for some reason you should get wax on your clothes, let it dry and scrape it off with a brush.
It is recommended that you iron any remaining residue by placing the fabric between two
blotting papers. If you still see any wax residue, take a rag dampened with benzine or other
solvent and rub it over the affected surface. Afterwards, normal washing is recommended.

As the salt solution is added, the viscosity increases, however, care must be taken to do
so gradually, since an excess of this solution causes the viscosity to decrease, leaving the gel as
water. (Problem solved by adding more sodium lauryl ether sulfate).

IV INDICATIONS FOR USE

Pour undiluted hand-washing liquid soap into a dispenser and apply a small amount to
the palms of your hands. Scrub, wash and rinse.

This product has an approximate yield of 2,000 washes per liter.

Compiled by Mr. Quim 5
Can with a capacity of 350 g (you can use your previous wax containers or use a large,
empty and clean tuna can) with a lid preferably.
Fine mesh strainer.
Whisk (you can use a plastic fork, a tongue depressor or a wooden stick). Adhesive label.
Latex or plastic gloves.
Procedure:
The carnauba wax is crushed in the molcajete or with a hammer on the floor inside a bag,
until a fine powder is obtained.
The 31/2 tablespoons are taken, strained and deposited in the can.
Place 1/3 cup of yellow wax, together with the carnauba wax in the same can.
Two cups of water are put to boil in the two-liter saucepan, (to speed up the process, you can
cover the saucepan in the heating stages).
Once it is boiling, the can is heated in a bain-marie and left for a few minutes until the waxes
are completely melted. Once liquid, the fire is turned off and the pan is placed outside the
stove in a safe place, so that the cup of turpentine can be added little by little, being careful
not to spill it from the can.
Then place the pan back on the stove and turn it on. If we have a saucepan with a lid, heat
for one minute with maximum flame. If we have a pan without a lid, heat for two minutes
with minimum flame.
With the aid of a whisk, the liquid mixture is stirred for ten seconds.
The can is removed from the pan and left to cool in a safe place exposed to the open air for
three hours. At the end of the time we incorporate the mixture with the whisk stirring gently
until a semi-paste consistency is obtained, which is left to stand for 5 hours.
Finally, the small spoonful of mineral oil is added and a quick stirring of thirty seconds is
made with the whisk, so as to obtain a creamy and smooth wax.

Packaging and preservation:

Keep this product in the can tightly covered. Do not forget to label it with the name of the
product, date of manufacture and expiration date. It is convenient to store your car wax in a
dry and dark place.

Interesting fact:

The first ancestor of today's cars, a steam tractor, was built in France in the second half of
the 18th century, and in 1892 in Paris, Levassor built the first real automobile, as it had a
special place for the engine, and even had a clutch and gears. Many inventors and
manufacturers began to build automobiles, which at first were so expensive that only the rich
could afford them, until Ransom Olds, founder of the Oldsmobile factory, built the first

CAR WASH

INTRODUCTION

The car wash involves four parts:

a) Body

b) Clothing, upholstery and dashboard

c) Machinery

d) Tires, wheels and fenders

They have been classified in this way because they are surfaces with different finishes and
dirt problems.

Body

It is a steel surface coated with automotive paint and glossy finish, which can be dulled by
the use of harsh detergents, so traditionally it was only washed with water, however, if we
use mild detergents we can carry out a deep cleaning without damaging the paint and if we
also leave a light protective layer of silicone oil, we will give the surface shine, while avoiding
the effects of acid rain. However, if we use mild detergents we can carry out a deep cleaning
without damaging the paint and if we also leave a light protective layer of silicone oil, we will
give the surface shine, avoiding at the same time the effects of acid rain.

IV INDICATIONS FOR USE

Apply with a spray gun on the plastic or vinyl surface, which has been previously cleaned,
then wipe with a cloth to clean the excess of the product.

It is also excellent for cleaning and polishing wood surfaces by rubbing them with a cloth
dampened with this product on dust-free surfaces.

IMPORTANT NOTES

The water used to prepare the products should not have been stored in tanks or cisterns
that are not washed regularly, it is preferable to use tap water from the inlet.

• Powder colorants should be diluted in water before adding them to the products, so that
the color intensity can be better controlled. If you have the three basic dyes; blue, red
and yellow, you can obtain all the shades of the rainbow by mixing them. Anilines and
water-soluble vegetable dyes are recommended for cleaning products. In the case of
cosmetics, they must be approved by the Ministry of Health.

• Essences should be stored in containers that protect them from light. They are added at
room temperature, never when the product is hot.

• Solvents such as isopropyl alcohol and xylol, which are flammable and form explosive
substances with air, should be stored in ventilated places where smoking is prohibited.

• Acids and alkalis are very corrosive to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract and should be
handled with gloves. In case an acid comes in contact with the skin, wash with sodium
bicarbonate solution, never with water alone.

In case an alkali (monoethanolamine or soda) comes in contact with the skin, wash with
citric acid solution, never with water alone.

• Formaldehyde is a very toxic substance that should be handled with gloves and should
never be mixed with bleach. Never put more than what is indicated in the formulas.

Manual for the elaboration of household chemical products 6

Compiled by Mr. Quim 1
• Thickeners such as carboxymethylcellulose and carbopol dissolve better if left to hydrate
in water for 12 hours before mixing with other ingredients.

• The salt for thickening products containing sodium lauryl ether sulfate should not exceed
one third of the detergent itself or of this detergent, because in this case, instead of
increasing the viscosity, it decreases it. Never add it directly, add it previously dissolved
in water, at the maximum concentration, to better control the final viscosity.

• The pH of a product is a variable that is very useful to control to ensure consistent

quality. pH indicator paper strips and potentiometers to obtain this data are available
from laboratory instrument suppliers.

• It is advisable to make batches of 20 liters of each of the products, since these can be
made in plastic buckets of this capacity and can be easily agitated with a wooden shovel.

• One kilogram equals 1000 grams.

• One liter equals 1000 milliliters

• A liter of pure water weighs one kilogram, but not all substances weigh one kilogram.

• The information contained in this publication is provided with the intention of training the
reader in the manufacture of products, however, since we have no control over the
production practices and selection of raw materials, we assume no liability expressed or
implied in the presentation and use of this information.
The trademarks of the products mentioned here are the property of their manufacturers
and we do not have any relationship with them nor do we describe the original formulas,
we only provide the formula of products that work in a similar way.
* See important notes in this manual.

III MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUE

Dissolve the ingredients in the water in the order of the formula and adjust the viscosity at
the end with the saturated solution of common salt (table salt dissolved in a little water). Mix
in each step with moderate agitation.
