State anxiety (S/A) is conceptualized as a transient emotional state or condition of the human organism that is
characterized by subjective, consciously perceived feelings of tension and apprehension, as well as by a
hyperactivity of the autonomic nervous system. It may vary over time and fluctuate in intensity.
Trait anxiety (A/R) indicates a relatively stable anxious propensity whereby subjects differ in their tendency to
perceive situations as threatening and consequently raise their state anxiety (A/E). As a psychological concept,
A/R possesses characteristics similar to the constructs that Atchison calls "motives" (those dispositions that
remain latent until activated by some situational stimuli), and that Campbell alludes to as "acquired behavioral
dispositions" (residues of past experiences that predispose one both to see the world in a certain way and to
manifest object-bound response tendencies).
