The End of Horsing Around in Kuta?

Wo r s e n i n g Tr a f f i c Congestion in Kuta, Bali May Foreshadow the Final Days for Horse and Carriage 'Dokar' Trade.
The days may be numbered for the dokars or horse drawn carriages that ply the streets of Kuta in Bali. Members of the Denpasar Dokar Association are find that the chronic traffic congestion along Kuta's busy beachfront and competition from taxis are making the horse-drawn transport a less-thanpreferred mode of public transport by Bali visitors. NusaBali quotes a dokar driver, Mak Din (27), saying: it's as though dokars are less preferred by visitors, especially in Kuta's current situation of traffic becoming more and more congested. The estimated 42 dokars who work in Kuta are also finding the competition for customers extremely

intense. Equally intense is the competition for parking spaces along main roads from at which the horses can rest while waiting for passengers. We are often compelled to keep driving our dokars just looking for a place to park, complained Mak Din. As a result, dokar drivers are having run-ins with the police and local authorities when they park in areas officially off-limit for parking. Continue to page 2

Badung Regency Predicts 10% More Tourists in 2012

Ambitious Tourism Targets from Badung Regency for 2012 Bring Warnings About Putting Quantity Before Quality in Promoting Bali Tourism
The tourism service of the Badung regency of Bali is targeting 3 million tourist visits to tourist objects in South Bali in 2012. This target is more than a 10% increase over the estimated 2.7 foreign million tourists projected to visit Bali in 2011. We are optimistic that the currently conducive condition of tourism will allow us to achieve 2.7 million foreign tourists this year. When we look at the latest data, foreign tourists who have visited Bali so far this year have exceeded two million people, explained the head of tourism for Badung, Cok Raka Darmawan to the Bali Post. Darmawan said that various efforts are underway to achieve current arrival targets. Promotions are being carried out both in Indonesia and abroad. The Badung regency also continues to pay more attention to quality over quantity in promoting tourism in order not to damage Bali's reputation. He said that while the number of tourists visiting Bali continues to grow, the revenues obtained from individual visitors and length of stay are still much less than in n e i g h b o u r i n g destinations. Madiun also sees low quality visitors to Bali as an environmental threat, breeding a lessened respect for nature and sustainable tourism. Said Madiun, the government must focus on quality tourists with high spending and longer lengths of stay, because this type of visitor tend to have a higher concern for preserving the natural environment. www.balidiscovery.com

A two-faced cat is celebrating his 12th birthday, breaking a Guinness record in the process
FRANK and Louie - an American cat born with two faces - has made it into the Guinness Book of World Records after celebrating his 12th birthday.
The Janus cat is the longest surviving feline of its kind after he was rescued as a kitten when his former owner wanted to have him put down. Ref's knickers in twist over fashion foul, sends off six kids in Wales
A REFEREE sent off six members of a youth soccer team during a game in Wales following a spat over the colour of the players' underpants.
The unusual incident began when the referee spotted that a player from English team Bath City was wearing white cycling shorts under the team's red shorts, it was reported. Another player was spotted wearing black undershorts. Football Association (FA) rules state both pieces of clothing must be the same colour. The rule, h o w e v e r, i s r a r e l y enforced. Adding to the controversy, the two teenage players were ordered to change on the sideline in full view of the nearly 150 people in attendance - and their Welsh opponents Newport opened the scoring while they were off the field. One of the players was even ordered to remove the underpants under his cycling shorts after the referee took exception to their color as well, and he returned to the field wearing nothing under his shorts at all. "The referee may have been right on a technicality but I was made, the intended consequence was that 16- and 17year-olds should have to change their shorts in public at the side of a pitch. That cannot be the right thing to be done at this level," said Bath City chairman Manda Rigby. The incident led to a number of angry exchanges throughout the FA Youth Cup match and ultimately saw the sending off of four Bath players, an unused substitute and Bath manager Billy Clark as Newport went on to win 6-0.

Gang slang 101: 'You've never heard of sipping yak?

A NEW York jury was been given a confusing lesson in gang slang - when a New York Police Department narcotics expert and a defence lawyer sparred over the multiple meanings of words like "yak" and "scud" captured on surveillance recordings. Testifying against five alleged leaders of a notorious New York gang called "Goons on Deck", Detective Alfred Hernandez of the NYPD drug enforcement task force told jurors that "yak" means "crack"
and "scud" means marijuana. But Frank Rothman, lawyer for accused kingpin Jaquan "Jay Cash" Layne, tried to persuade jurors that, at least according to online slang dictionaries, "yak" actually means cognac and "scud" means, as the lawyer apologetically put it, "a female who appears to be attractive from a distance but who isn't, closeup". The disparity made for some amusing exchanges, it was "You've never heard of sipping yak?" Mr Rothman asked at one point. "No sir," the narcotics expert answered. "I've heard of somebody yacking, as in throwing up." Layne - who prosecutors said was taped on a pay phone, directing his crew and advising his girlfriend, Afrika Owes, on where to deliver firearms - was behind bars and unable to mastermind anything during the drug investigation, his lawyer insists.

Nestle ad first to pitch at canine customers

Nestle, one of the world's biggest makers of pet food, said it had launched the first television commercial designed especially for dogs, using a high-frequency tone to grab their attention.
"Dogs' hearing is twice as sharp as humans. They can pick up frequencies which are beyond our range and they are better at differentiating sounds," said Georg Sanders, a nutrition expert at Nestle Purina PetCare in Germany. Nestle asked experts in pet behaviour in the United States to research what would appeal to dogs and used the results to create German, which features a dog pricking up his ears. "The television commercial aims to reach both t h e p e t a n d t h e o w n e r, supporting the special one-toone relationship between them," said Xavier Perez, Brand Manager of Beneful for Europe. Nestle said in a statement the commercial follows an award-winning campaign in Germany that featured "sniffable" posters to attract dogs. Nestle's Petcare division reported first-half sales of 4.8 billion Swiss francs ($5.4 billion), accounting for almost 12 percent of revenue at the world's biggest food group. It competes with "So delicious, so healthy, Mars, maker of the Pedigree dog so happy," ends the commercial in food brand. the 23-second commercial for its Beneful dog food brand. The advert, to be screened on Austrian television this week, features a tone similar to a dog whistle, which humans can barely hear, as well as an audible "squeak" like the sound dogs' toys make and a high-pitched "ping."

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

'day again punters and welcome to the paper for another week, and what a week it was with the both grand finals being played. Needless to say the team that counts the most took a loss to Geelong in a nail bitting finish to the season. Unfortunately the Mighty Pies just couldn't get up over the Cats in the end and handed the big one over (oh the pain, the pain) I must take my hat off to Geelong as at the end of last season and the start of this one, I reckon almost everyone in Australia thought after they lost Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com their coach and then the apparent super star Ablett, that they would be a push over this year, which was simple put, not the case. I want to be the first to congratulate the Geelong coach, Chris Scott, for such a great first time in the coaching box and look forward to many years of pro A.F.L football from whichever team he is driving. In regards to the legend Mr Mick Malthouse, I would like to thank him for the brilliant work he did with the Mighty Pies and respect that his huge career within the A.F.L has come to an end. The job is NOW in the hand of Mr Buckley, who might bring some new ideas to the Pies as the new Mr Scott has done for the Cats. Well done to the Cats on the great year of footy, and yes I am counting the days before the bragging rights end for all the pirates that taste test the little greenys with me on occasion. Well done. Moving along, the N.R.L was a great grand final on Sunday with the Manly Sea Eagles getting up over the NZ Warriors to take the big one again. I'm not entirely sure why so many punters dislike the Sea Eagles, but at the end of the day they had a deserved win. The Warriors' I think are a team that should be watched closely for a while as they had a team playing in every age level at the grand final level, which means they have a heap of up and coming high end players in the wind. I'm not 100% sure why they have a team based in Australia and would have thought that to be called the NZ Warriors, they should be based in New Zealand. Anyway and great out come to the weekend for the Sea Eagles. Ok folks I'm not really in the mood to dribble on anymore about things, so I will leave you all for the week and let you think about what each weekend has in store for you all now the footy has finished. My bet is there will be a few lost souls next weekend without the Footy being played and I know a few people will be counting the days until the pre season starts again in February next year, or counting the days before the gloating stops from the premiership winners. I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, you must be gracious in victory & magnanimous in defeat. Enjoy your week, Bloody Pies, ALIASJ..

Shackleton's biscuit fetches tasty price

A biscuit which polar explorer Ernest Shackleton handed to a starving fellow traveller on an expedition more than 100 years ago has sold at auction in London for 1,250 pounds (almost $2,000).
The biscuit, one of thousands which formed the staple diet for Shackleton and his companions on the 1907-1909 Nimrod expedition, failed to reach its top catalogue price of 1,500 pounds ($2,390) at Christie's. A simple yet moving ceremony of remembrance was held at the Australian Consulate in Bali on Saturday, October 1, 2011, marking the events of October 1, 2005, when two terrorist bombings in Jimbaran and Kuta killed more than 20 people. Among those who died were 15 Indonesians, 4 Australians, one Japanese in addition to the 3 Indonesians who suicided when they detonated bombs at a beachside restaurant in Jimbaran and a restaurant at the Kuta Town Square. The explorers were forced to turn back after battling to within 160 kilometres of the pole. Their return journey became a race against starvation, with the group surviving on half rations. At one point Shackleton handed fellow explorer Frank Wild one of his own biscuits, prompting Wild to record in his diary: "Thousands of pounds would not have bought that biscuit." The biscuit was left at the hut at Cape Royds in the Antarctic where Shackleton was based during the expedition and is perfectly preserved. Nicholas Lambourn, a director at Christie's, said ahead of the auction that the biscuits were designed to provide the explorers with maximum stamina but they lacked a crucial ingredient. "They had a special recipe in an attempt to produce the right amounts of protein and carbohydrate," he said. "But they didn't understand the importance of vitamin C, they weren't perfect." In 2001, a biscuit from another Shackleton expedition sold for 7,637 pounds at auction, even though just several crumbs remained.

Turkish morgue is equipped for the living

Officials in a city in rural eastern Turkey, responding to an ancient local fear of being buried alive, have equipped the local morgue with the latest gadgetry in case any of the bodies stored there have been declared dead by mistake.
Alarms and electronic motion detectors in the mortuary in Malatya, a town not otherwise known for its modernity, will detect the slightest movement by a living person emerging from a coma or long period of unconsciousness. The 36 refrigerators will be fitted with interior door handles to allow their occupants to climb out of their coffins and open the doors, Akif Kayadurmus, head of the municipal funerals service said. "The device detects even the slightest movement and sends out an

alarm," Kayadurmus said. "We also placed a system at the feet of the deceased that opens the refrigerator in case of contact. The resurrections may be rare, but we have taken every possibility into account." The morgue, which is due to open this week, will also have a lounge, a cafe and digital information panels to allow mourners to follow the washing and wrapping of the dead in accordance with Islamic tradition.

HEIDI, a cross-eyed opossum who became an internet sensation in Germany, winning three times more Facebook admirers than Chancellor Angela Merkel, has died.
"The cross-eyed opossum Heidi has closed her eyes forever," said the zoo in Leipzig, eastern Germany. The animal, aged three and a half, had been treated for health problems for weeks and zoo officials decided to put her down "to spare her further pain and suffering". Heidi's distinctive eye problem was thought to be due to a poor diet before she was abandoned in the United States, or because she was overweight, leading to fat deposits behind her eyes. Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22 Forget about seeking a diplomatic solution for persistent issues. You must now talk them over, and with the kind of frankness you usually do all you can to avoid. Actually, that's been the problem. Tackle these in the most direct and forthright manner you can. You'll be amazed how much you clear up. Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 21 You long ago learned that those who insist on having the last word in disputes may win the battle, but they lose the war. But now, the situations in question are far more complex than you realise, so you could easily be drawn into pointless debates. The less you say, the better. Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 When you believe in something, you'll fight for it. However, you're urged to conduct a serious enquiry before you start a campaign. Not only are the odds good your facts are wrong, but once you begin exploring the actual situation involved, you'll realise that your first task is to rethink your objectives. Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 By the time of the encounter between the Sun and your ruler Saturn, in a week's time, you'll need to make some pivotal decisions. While you might feel that you're adequately prepared to deal with these, you're in for some surprises. The more you learn now, therefore, the better informed your response will be. Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 Explaining your ideas to those who're interested can be a pleasure. But attempting to convince those who're both ignorant and unreceptive is an entirely different matter. Figuring out what to say will require considerable thought. Bizarrely, what you learn in the process will be as informative to you as it is to them. Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 19 There have been times in the past when you've allowed yourself to be persuaded to go along with the ideas of others solely for their convenience. Obviously you regretted it later. Yet you're about to do the same thing again. This time, however, at least you've spotted it in time.

HOROSCOPE PREDICTION 29 Sept - 2 Oct 2011

Aries Mar 20 - Apr 19 When partners or close associates said they'd shoulder the responsibility for certain rather pivotal arrangements, you were as surprised as you were relieved. What you forgot was that they wouldn't bring your fighting spirit to the proceedings. Not only will they not do things as you could have, you should expect compromises. Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 Initially you rather hoped that one particular individual would recognise the problems they were causing everybody else. However, you've only just realised they've no idea the impact of their actions, which means you have no choice but to raise the issue in question with them directly. And the sooner, the better. Gemini May 21 - Jun 20 You so loathe being having others try to impose their will on you, that you bend over backwards to avoid doing the same. However, somebody seems determined to ignore what's clearly their responsibility. And, as time is passing swiftly, you've no choice but to tell them exactly what they must do. Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22 The last thing you're in a mood for are serious discussions about tedious matters. But once you're actually talking things over, you'll realise how small a part those things you've been dreading play in these. Tackle and settle them as swiftly as possible, and you can turn your attention to far more rewarding topics. Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 Ordinarily you're upfront about both your feelings and your desires. But in dealing with one particular individual recently, you've discovered that they take ages making even the simplest of decisions. Now that you're in a rush, you're adopting an uncharacteristically roundabout way of organising arrangements that involve the individual in question. U.S. casino offers plastic surgery jackpot

Rolling the dice and playing the slots at one Atlantic City casino may have gamblers in New Jersey cashing in on an unexpected jackpot: botox, cheek implants or liposuction.
One winner of the Trump Taj Mahal Nip, Tuck and Lift Sweepstakes could walk away with $25,000 towards an array of plastic surgery procedures, according to the casino. Players earn chances to win the lucrative makeover throughout the month of October, with a drawing for the winner held on October 29 at the casino. "We wanted to change the face of a typical casino promotion and with this one we are literally doing it," Trump Entertainment Resorts Senior Vice President of Marketing Kathleen McSweeney said. "Many people have something they want to change; a nip and tuck here, a lift there, but the cost of these procedures can be quite c o s t l y, " s h e s a i d i n a statement. The estimated cost of a breast augmentation is between $5,000 and $8,000 with an upper and lower eyelid tuck costing roughly $5,000, a c c o r d i n g t o infoplasticsurgery.com pricing cited by the casino. Botox injections run a couple hundred dollars while liposuction could cost between $2,500 and $10,000, according to the estimates. The prize money will be awarded in cash, it said.

Britain's cure for economic slowdown - drive faster

The government has come up with a literal cure for economic slowdown -it wants drivers to drive faster on the nation's motorways.
"Now it is time to put Britain back in the fast lane of global economies and look again at the motorway speed limit which is nearly 50 years old, and out of date thanks to huge advances in safety and m o t o r i n g t e c h n o l o g y, " Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said. The speed limit on Britain's motorways is 70 miles per hour (120 kph), lower than in many countries in continental Europe. "Increasing the motorway speed limit to 80 mph would generate economic benefits of hundreds of millions of pounds through shorter journey times. So we will consult later this year on raising the limit to get Britain moving," Hammond said. The government is seeking ways to boost a faltering economy without breaking with its austerity plans. Its "drive faster" plan was condemned by environmentalists who said it would lead to increased oil consumption and carbon emissions. Hammond said he was confident higher speeds would have only a marginal effect on road safety.

The BBC has apologised to the European Union after a Brussels official was repeatedly called an "idiot" while taking part in a flagship news broadcast on the eurozone debt crisis.
TV bosses said they contacted European Commission economic affairs spokesman A m a d e u A l t a f a j Ta r d i o t o apologise for "discourtesy" after he walked off the Newsnight show during a video-link appearance from Brussels on Wednesday night (local time). The clip turned into an internet hit and piled more discomfort on the BBC, which is already under fire for an interview with a self-styled independent trader who claimed bankers were "dreaming of another recession" so they can make more money. The Commission, the EU civil service central to international negotiations to prevent the eurozone crisis from turning into a global economic catastrophe, had earlier demanded a formal apology. Portuguese national Mr Altafaj joined a discussion panel including Peter Oborne, a noted eurosceptic columnist primarily associated with Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper.

"Obviously we are waiting for those concerned to transmit their apologies," she said, adding that by midday, only "oral" regret had been conveyed. BBC spokeswoman Helen Deller later said a further apology had been issued. "This was a heated, live debate regarding the European debt crisis about which there are strongly held views and positions," she said. "We certainly do not advocate Mr Oborne's comments regarding Mr Altafaj Tardio and Jeremy did robustly challenge him, criticising his treatment of the other guests. "Jeremy also pointed out his behaviour meant the opportunity to further explore the European Commission's position was lost. "We have apologised to Mr Altafaj Tardio for the discourtesy he was shown." The BBC was already on the defensive on Thursday over claims self-styled trader Alessio Rastani, who told BBC 24 "Goldman Sachs rules the world", was part of an organised hoax. The broadcaster said it was satisfied he was not a hoaxer.

BBC sorry for 'idiot in Brussels' jibe

In what Commission insiders viewed as an ambush, he was asked by star presenter Jeremy Paxman at the start of the debate: "Would you like to apologise, Mr Altafaj Tardio, for the lack of European leadership in this crisis?" Mr Altafaj defended the "political project" that is the creation of the eurozone in 1999, arguing that economics alone were not the reason to proceed with successive bailouts for Greece, Ireland and the Portugal. When Mr Oborne then came in, he referred to Mr Altafaj up on the screen as "that idiot in Brussels". Paxman, known for his tough questioning, then turned to the commission's representative and said: "Mr Idiot in Brussels, would you like to respond?" Mr Altafaj ignored Paxman's comment and stuck to his official line - defending his boss, Finland's Olli Rehn. But then Mr Oborne repeated the word "idiot," although Paxman butted in to say "will you stop referring to 'this idiot'," warning Mr Oborne that such language was "offensive". H o w e v e r, w h e n M r Oborne repeated the attack yet again, viewers could clearly see Mr Altafaj gently remove his earpiece and walk off his Brussels set in the background. "The basis for all work and certainly of our approach to the media is respect and professionalism - which was not respected in this case," Commission spokeswoman Pia Ahrenkilde said on Thursday during a break from the serious business of Mr Altafaj welcoming

Two 90-year-old women, Bertha and Betty, had been friends all of their lives. When it was clear that Bertha was dying, Betty visited her every day. One day Betty said, "Bertha, we both loved playing softball all our lives, and we played all through high school. Please do me one favor: when you get to heaven, somehow you must let me know if there's women's softball there." Bertha looked up at Betty from her deathbed and said, "Betty, you've been my best friend for many years. If it's at all possible, I'll do this favor for you." Shortly after that, Bertha died. A few nights later, Betty was awakened from a sound sleep by a blinding flash of white light and a voice calling out to her, "Betty, Betty." "Who is it," asked Betty, sitting up suddenly. "Who is it?" "Betty -- it's me, Bertha." "You're not Bertha. Bertha just died." "I'm telling you, it's me, Bertha," insisted the voice. "Bertha! Where are you?" "In heaven," replied Bertha. "I have some really good news and a little bad news." "Tell me the good news first," said Betty. "The good news," Bertha said with joy and enthusiasm, "is that there's women's softball in heaven. Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before me are here, too. Even better than that, we're all young again. Better still, it's always Springtime and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play softball all we want, and we never get tired." "That's fantastic," said Betty. "It's beyond my wildest dreams! So what's the bad news?" "You're pitching Tuesday."

Crunchy crickets going mainstream in Australia

Looking for a taste treat for a special snack? Perhaps a packet of chocolate covered bugs, chocolate-chip mealworms or cricket lollipops will hit the spot.
Australia's Aborigines have been eating witchetty grubs for centuries, but now entomologist Skye Blackburn is breeding edible bugs and selling them to Australians from all walks of life, and as special treats at corporate functions and children's parties. "Eating insects is a fairly new concept," said Blackburn, who runs The G r e e n Scorpion and bug shop, a Sydney-based online venture that sells the creatures for human and a n i m a l consumption, as well as for collections. " O n Father's Day we sold a lot of gift packs, which included chocolate covered bugs, choc-chip mealworm cookies and flavoured lollipops with bugs in the centre." As with many business ventures, the beginning was serendipitous. "We were doing a pet and animal expo, and needed a good promotional item to get people to come over to the stall. So we started making the lollipops and they were really successful," she said. She also sells bugs ground up into chocolatecoated cookies, frozen bugs and roasted bugs, so they can be mailed to customers. A trial pack retails for A$20 ($19.64). The bugs can be bought by the 100 grams or in kilogram lots. flavour a little bit better than the mealworm." Blackburn said edible bugs also offer nutritional benefits. "Crickets are high in calcium, termites are high in iron and silk worms have special amino acid and good fats in them, while tarantula and water bugs mainly have protein factor," she said, noting that they are also low in fat. Sales are picking up. Blackburn said the shop sells 1,000 lollipops a week and that she has about 100 regular customers who buy raw insects to use as part of their daily diet, including university professors, doctors and lawyers. B u t eating bugs can still be a hard swallow in the land of the barbecue. "Som e people can't get past the fact they are eating a bug," she said. "Some people spit it out because that would be a normal reaction if you got a bug in your food. Others are willing to try and love it." ($1 = 1.018 Australian dollars)

A motorcycle mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Harley-Davidson when he spotted a wellknown cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage, 'Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?' The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, 'So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $39,675 a year and you make $1,695,000 when you and I are doing basically the same work?' The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic.... 'Try doing it with the engine running'.

Prognosticators who predicted the end of the world and got it wrong, scientists who built a wasabi fire alarm, and researchers who studied how the urge to urinate affects decision-making were among the winners of spoof LG Nobel prizes on Thursday.
The annual prizes, meant to entertain and encourage scientific research, are awarded by the Journal of Improbable Research as a whimsical counterpart to the Nobel Prizes, which will be announced next week. Warriors' future excites Johnson

His brilliant second-half performance was not enough to help the Warriors to a first NRL grand final victory but Shaun Johnson wants to hang around and be part of a club that has the makings of being a force for many years.
The Warriors contested finals in all three grades at the Olympic stadium on Sunday, with the club's NSW Cup team the Vulcans going down 30-28 to an experienced Canterbury side and the Under-20s side beating North Queensland 31-30 in golden point time. However it was the 21year-old half-back, with less than 20 first grade games under his belt, that almost single-handedly helped the Warriors run down Manly in a frantic last 15 minutes before Jamie Lyon's late try eased the Sea Eagles' nerves and sealed a 24-10 victory. Despite his lack of experience, Johnson was magnificent in defeat and his arrival as the brightest young talent in the NRL will almost certainly make him a man in demand when he comes off contract next year. The young Aucklander, whose exquisite pass set up Manu Vatuvei's try to kick-start the Warriors' best spell of the match, insists he has no interest in playing with any other club. "The best thing here is that we are all pretty close, we are good friends with the guys in the Vulcans and the 20s, we spend a lot of time with each other throughout the year," Johnson said. "I am so keen to stay here, I love playing with the club and with so many of my friends, and we feel we have a very bright future here." Despite his dramatic contribution in the second half, Johnson admitted he allowed the occasion to get the better of him in the opening 40 minutes. "I felt I belonged out there, I played my role, second half we showed what we can do, but credit to Manly their ability to hold us out and turn it around, is the sign of a good footy club," he said. "I think I was a bit overawed to start with, but it doesn't take much to make a play. "Looking back at the season, it is something I won't appreciate until I get home and sit down. In the specialized world of insurance, this one takes the cake -- or perhaps the pie -- a new policy called "SLICE" specifically designed to protect the owners of pizza parlors.
C a l i f o r n i a insurance brokerage EPIC Programs Group said the "Safety, Loss Control, Insurance, Coverage, Expertise" program would address liabilities pizza parlor owners face from their delivery drivers. The program, available in 40 states, includes mandatory driver training and other risk the food service industry. Hashim Amla will captain South Africa in this month's limited-overs series against Australia, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has said.
Opening batsman Amla, who will lead South A f r i c a i n t w o Tw e n t y 2 0 internationals and three onedayers against the touring Australians, will deputise for AB de Villiers who misses the series due to a fractured finger. Veteran wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, left out of the Proteas cricket World Cup squad this year, returns to the one-day squad and 23-year-old batsman Richard Levi was the only uncapped player included. "With the International Cricket Council's World Twenty20 less than a year away we need to keep a solid core of experience around the side," CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson said in a statement. "We will probably go in with seven batsmen, including Boucher at number seven, and we have kept all our bowling options that worked well at the World Cup," Hudson said. The selectors have kept faith with opening batsman Graeme Smith who stepped down as limited-overs captain after the World Cup. The series against Australia will be the first under new coach Gary Kirsten who guided India to World Cup glory in March. The limited-overs portion of Australia's tour starts with a T20 international in Cape Town on October 13 and ends with an ODI in Durban on October 28.

Cahill, Schwarzer ruled out for Socceroos

Socceroos stars Tim Cahill and Mark Schwarzer have been ruled out of Australia's upcoming friendly against Malaysia and World Cup qualifier against Oman. Everton playmaker Cahill has recently been hampered by ankle and shin complaints, while Schwarzer suffered a back injury in Fulham's 6-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Monday morning (AEDT). The injuries mean the Socceroos will be minus Cahill, Schwarzer, Brett Emerton and Harry Kewell for the friendly in Canberra on Friday night and qualifier in Sydney next Tuesday night.
FC in the muchhyped A-League opener this Saturday, Osieck decided on an entirely overseas-based squad of 19 players. Cahill was included in the original squad despite suffering a shin injury while playing for Everton against Manchester City on September 24. Osieck has drafted in Danish-based goalkeeper Nathan Coe to replace Schwarzer. The Socceroos had their first light training session on Tuesday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney.

Socceroos coach Holger Osieck surprisingly left prized ALeague recruits Kewell and Emerton out of his squad that was announced last Tuesday. With Kewell's Melbourne Victory taking on Emerton's Sydney

Woman finds out 'boyfriend' was lesbian sex offender

A Scottish woman who found out her boyfriend was actually a female sex offender has waived her right to anonymity in an attempt to help other women.
Single mother Nicole Lindsay dated 'Lee Brooks' for years before she found out that he was actually a she. Her real name is Samantha Brooks and she had once been jailed for abusing a 14-year-old girl. Samantha attended court in Edinburgh earlier this year charged with two counts of having sex by fraud. It's believed she deceived two women into believing she was a man. However her case was thrown out of court after another alleged victim and former friend of Nicole refused to cooperate with prosecutors. According to Nicole: "She got these charges dropped by playing a clever hand with the other victim." As Samantha is now a free woman, Nicole has broken her silence to ensure the deception doesn't occur again. She first started dating 'Lee' in 2006 when they started a long distance relationship. They broke up in 2007 and shortly after 'Lee' told Nicole she'd been sent to jail for allegedly beating up a pedophile. In truth, she'd been jailed for 18-months for sexual offences against a 14-year-old girl and had been put on the sexual offenders' register. They resumed their relationship after Samantha's release and even decided to get married. However Nicole's family grew suspicious of this 'man' with no facial hair or Adam's apple. "I didn't believe Lee could be a woman. We had been having sex on and off for years. But I knew he was hiding something." she had never been comfortable showing her naked body with a partner. suffered from testicular cancer which is why she couldn't see or touch his manhood. It's believed Samantha put condoms and padding over a modified wooden toilet roll holder to obtain sexual intimacy. She also bound her breasts using bandages and clingwrap saying she had scars. Nicole finally found out the truth in September last year when Samantha was arrested. She said: "When the police told me Lee was a she I just couldn't believe it. I was in shock. I've been through hell. "The thought of how Lee deceived me and my whole family has given me nightmares and made me feel sick. "I want to be sure other girls and vulnerable young women avoid this sick person."

It is a familiar scenario for Power, who led the championship race for most of 2010. He led by 12 points going into the final race of the year in Miami, but clipped a wall and had to watch from pit-lane as Franchitti went on to claim the title by five points. He may need Franchitti to suffer a similar fate to stand a chance this season, with Las Vegas being an oval-type circuit, on which Franchitti has posted 14 of his 19 IndyCar race wins compared to Power's one.

Series leader Power started from pole position at the Kentucky Speedway oval and led the first 48 laps before Brazilian driver Ana Beatriz struck his car as she was exiting her pit and he was turning into his. The collision sliced a huge gash into the sidepod of Power's car, slowing it, and he could only finish 19th. The result was shattering for Power as his main rival, Scotsman Dario Franchitti, the two-time and defending series champion, finished second and took over top spot on the points standings. Franchitti went into the race trailing Power by 12 points and will now head to the October 16 season finale in Las Vegas with an 18-point lead over the Queenslander. Another podium finish for Franchitti will almost certainly ensure he edges Power for the title. "We had the fastest car, an unbelievably fast car," a rueful Power refuelled and hurried back onto the track after the crash but Franchitti, who started 11th, took the lead.

Power returned in ninth and was unable to match his early speed, falling to 23rd after needing crewmen to tape over the hole in his car. Ed Carpenter edged Franchitti at the finish line by just .0098 of a second, after the pair staged a wheel-to-wheel battle for the final 22 laps, to pick up the first victory of his IndyCar career. Franchitti vowed he would not be taking anything for granted

Australian selectors have rewarded Manly for its premiership success with rookie half-back Daly CherryEvans leading a Sea Eagles domination of the squad for the upcoming Four Nations tournament.
Cherry-Evans was one of five Sea Eagles named in the 24man squad, with Stewart brothers Brett and Glenn, Anthony Watmough and Tony Williams also earning a call-up following the 2410 grand final win over the Warriors. Williams and CherryEvans are two of six new faces in the side, with Keith Galloway, Corey Parker, Dave Taylor and Newcastle's Akuila Uate all in line for their first green and gold jumper. The tour of the United Kingdom will be Darren Lockyer's rugby league swansong, with the Test skipper to make his final appearance on Australian soil in the one-off Test against New Zealand in Newcastle on October 16. "His (Cherry-Evans') form's undeniable," Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens said. "I think Manly have plenty of claim and I don't think anyone would disagree the kid certainly earned an opportunity." Sheens also dismissed suggestions he had a personal issue with Watmough, despite reports this year his representative career could be over because of a clash. "I've always picked

Travis Auld said. The Suns said Brown and Weller had an argument with an unnamed person as they were leaving a party on the island. "The verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation when an unknown third party intervened," the club said. "The altercation initially involved Maverick Weller and then Campbell Brown. "Brown and Weller were questioned by Thai police about the incident, as were team-mates Jacob Gillbee and Joel Wilkinson, but no further action was taken. "It's important to note that Gillbee and Wilkinson were merely witnesses to the incident and not directly involved." The club added Weller had put himself at risk by becoming involved in the verbal argument, but said his involvement was "minimal". "The incident provided Maverick with a valuable lesson in relation to the additional responsibilities that come with being an AFL footballer," the club said. Auld said the Suns would review their procedures for players when they are on leave from the club. "This incident has been a major wake up call for our playing group - we will use it to further educate our players," he said.
