Clients are supported both on Server Core installations of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and on full installations of Windows Server 2008 and Windows server 2008 R2. For server platforms, the client support is independent of any other service operating on that server (e.g. domain controller, cluster services, or terminal services) unless otherwise stated.

For server platforms, the client support is independent of any other service operating on that server (e.g. domain controller, cluster services, or terminal services) unless otherwise stated. Console sessions controlled by Remote Assistance are supported, except for simultaneous use of Configuration Manager Remote Tools. For example, do not simultaneously use Remote Assistance and remote control on the same client. From the Configuration Manager console, there is no limitation for Remote Assistance and remote control when accessing different clients. The Configuration Manager remote control viewer is not supported on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 platforms. Fast User Switching (available in Windows XP in workgroup computers) is not supported in Configuration Manager 2012. It is supported for computers running Windows Vista.

Site system roles are supported on a Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008 with the exception of the reporting services point, Application Catalog website role and the Application Catalog web service roles. The Application Catalog website point and the Application Catalog web service point require installation of the .NET 4.0 framework available here. Also, you must perform some manual configuration on some site roles running Windows Server 2008. For more information, see How to Configure Windows Server 2008 for Site Systems.
2

Note that standard distribution points support Windows Server 2003 (including 32-bit), although some feature limitations (e.g. BranchCache) might apply. Branch distribution points have been deprecated and replaced with standard distribution points that can be hosted on Configuration Manager 2012 client operating system platforms, with the exception of Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 and Windows XP Tablet PC SP3.

1.4

SQL Server
Configuration Manager requires 64-bit SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition or SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, running Service Pack 1 with at least Cumulative Update 10 . Other versions of SQL Server, such as SQL Server 2008 with Service Pack 2 or SQL Server 2008 R2, are not supported. SQL Server 2008 Express is supported on secondary sites. When installing a secondary site, you are given the option to use an existing instance of SQL Server or to have Setup install an instance of SQL Server 2008 Express for you. Whichever option you choose, SQL Server must run on the same computer as the secondary site server. SQL Server Setup and Configuration Requirements: o You must install the database engine and replication components o You must install SQL Server Reporting Services if you plan to have a Reporting Services Point o You must use a case-insensitive collation (e.g. SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS) and it must be consistent throughout your hierarchy o You must use a dedicated SQL Server instance for each site o You may not install the SQL Server instance for more than one Configuration Manager site on a single SQL Server computer (due to port limitations, see below) o Configuration Manager 2012 Beta 2 requires SQL Server to use static port TCP/1433 (and TCP/4022 for SQL Server Service Broker if you use a central administration site or secondary sites). Because SQL Server named instances default to using dynamic ports, if you are using named instances, you must manually reconfigure the named instance to use the static port TCP 1433. o You must configure all SQL Server services (engine, agent, etc.) to run under the LOCAL SYSTEM account. If you use another account (e.g. NETWORK SERVICE or a domain user account), database replication will fail with certificate issues.

1.5

Supported Configurations

The following configurations are not supported with this beta version of Configuration Manager 2012: Clients and site systems from an untrusted forest. Workgroup clients are supported. SQL Server clusters Network load balancing (NLB) site systems (management points and software update points) SQL Server replicas for the management point Network Access Protection.

1.6

Language

Configuration Manager 2012 Beta 2 is only available as an English (ENU) SKU. Additionally, migration from Configuration Manager 2007 to Configuration Manager 2010 supports only Configuration Manager 2007 source sites that are installed with the English (ENU) SKU. Look out for an announcement about the availability of an International Client Pack (ICP) that includes the German (DEU) client. No other server or client languages will be released for Configuration Manager 2012 Beta 2.
