LESSONS ON PRAYER
We all know that prayer is a major source of power for our Christian life and ministry. But instead of going directly to the main Source of power, some Christians have come up with some fanciful ideas on how to avail power. Such as: 1. Going to some specific locations 2. Praying only at designated hours 3. Asking from some holy people 4. Assuming some specific posture 5. Holding on to some sacred objects Before teaching His disciples how to pray, He first of all taught them how not to pray. In particular, He emphasized that we should not: 1. Pray pretentiously (like the Pharisees) vv. 5-6 to show off to parade their religiosity 2. Pray repetitiously (like the pagans) vv. 7-8 to keep babbling some lengthy prayer to awaken their gods from slumber The key concept in the passage is: We are praying to the Father. The Father sees and rewards (v. 6) He knows (v. 8). In prayer, we are talking to our Heavenly Daddy. We are expressing our total dependence on Him, not to twist His arm to bend to our wishes. Yes, the Father does know beforehand, but He takes much delight in hearing from you and me.
