FEBRUARY 6, 2011 ESSENTIAL MARKS OF THE CHURCH

From the life of the Jerusalem Church, we learned there are some essential elements that distinguished it from any religious or social institutions of their day (and even our day): It was a Spirit-filled Church: The Church was directly under the control and influence of the Holy Spirit where His fruit was evident in the daily living of the followers of Jesus (Gal. 5:22-23) It was a committed Church: The Church was totally and continually committed to their calling as followers of Jesus, and to grow daily in every aspects of their lives to follow Jesus It was an instructed Church: The Church was devoted to learning from the Apostles (cf. Mt. 28:20) To know Who and what they believe in To discern truth from error To learn how to obey Him It was a fellowshipping Church: The Church was committed to togetherness to being one community of Gods people Sharing together Participating together Being together These essential elements distinguished them as the Church the assembly of Gods people people who were called out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Pet. 2:10). Lord willing, we shall continue looking at other essential marks in the weeks to come.
