droites.

UNE RELECTURE
DU MOYEN ÂGE ARMÉNIEN
Bernadette MARTIN-HISARD
Summary : This analysis of the two most recent books of Nina Garsoïan, a collection of
articles published between 1984 and 1988, and a masterly study of the period of formation
of the Armenian Church, highlights the doctrinal problems which had to be solued bet
ween the Church of the East and the Church of Constantinople in the Transcaucasian
context : a slow and complicated process.
1. Nina G. Garsoïan, Church and Culture in Early Medieval Armenia, Aldershot 1999
(Variorum Collected Studies Series).
2. Nina Garsoïan, L'Église arménienne et le Grand Schisme d'Orient, Louvain 1999
(CSCO vol. 574. Subsidia 100), 635 pages.
1982, sous le titre Armenia between Byzantium and the Sasanians.
rieur, demi-».
29. «As a result of their double rejection, the Armenian Chalcédonians, outside of the
small group of the ruling aristocraty, seem... to have formed a separate entity or "nation"
of their own, distinct from both the Greek and the Armenian worlds» (p. 108-109).
31. «Rather than fuse with the Armenian Chalcedonian aristocracy, the Royals and
their legitimist supporters, especially the Pahlawuni, closed ranks against them, disregar
ding any claim of ethnic solidarity» (p. 115).
32. «The overwhelming mass of the Armenian inhabitants of the empire, isolated by la
nguage more than by ethnic background, by religion (which prevented them from assuming
the authentic, Orthodox, Byzantine identity), and at last by the mythology surrounding their
lost king, remained alien and alienated — incorporated but not assimilated» (p. 124).
