ABSTRACT

Jishin, Kaminari, Kaji, Oyaji : From Port-au-Prince to Le Grand Paris 2050: Merging GIS with 3D Models to Re-envision Sustainability Although a well-known Japanese proverb sets forth four things that we tend to fear: Jishin (Earthquake), Kaminari (Thunder), Kaji (Fire) and Oyaji (father and society) , todays Japan continually draws on a range of old and new tools to proactively address these factors. How might we use technology 2.0 (GIS and Skype), math and science to help bilingual learners re-envision varied natural catastrophes as problem solving opportunities that might move us towards a more sustainable future? Drawing on four case studies: Jishin (Port-au-Prince Earthquake), Kaminari (Hurricanes Katrina and Ike), Kaji (Guatemalas Pacaya and Icelands Katla Volcanos) and Oyaji (Le Grand Paris 2050), this RTI and IB-aligned make-and-take workshop helps participants merge 3D layers visible through Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) into hands-on, foldable, sustainability books for proactively visualizing design variables (networks, demographies and habitats) with future sustainability in mind. After actively introducing GIS, presenters help participants build student-friendly, Japanese-designed simulations of earthquake, thunder, volcano and urban renewal to see layers in sustainability problem solving. Participants see how our students used these tools to examine cases with cohort classrooms across the globe. GIS-based visual problem solving readily connects culture and eco-geography with Singapore, TIMSS and other math/science methods, and GIS reinforces effective literacy and numeracy approaches for both multilingual and special needs learners. Resources are presented in French, Spanish and Japanese, and take-home tools will be provided.
