Essential Marks of the Church

BY PASTOR SANTOS YAO Genesis 12:1-3

Every church has its distinctive. The cults major on the minor and deviate from the truths of the Scripture. The liberal churches espouse the social gospel and water down the truths of the Scripture. Evangelical churches uphold the truths of the Scripture, and faithfully preserve and defend the faith. Francis Schaeffer, in the 1970s, summarizes the distinctive marks of the church into two: orthodoxy (sound doctrines) and orthopraxy (right living/Christian love). These are two distinguishing marks that separate the Church from heretical and liberal churches. The book of Acts also showed us the distinctive marks of the Church. From its early beginning at Pentecost, the Church was pictured to be distinct from any social and religious groups of the day. Specifically, the Church was : 1. A Spirit-filled Church v. 42 - it is a Church filled with the capital-S Spirit (the Holy Spirit), not the small-s spirit (human spirit) - it is the Holy Spirit that controls and influences the Church, not any single individual, nor any influential people - to be Spirit-filled does not denote speaking in tongues, or any other manifestations emphasized by the charismatic groups - the emphasis is on the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), not the gifts of the Spirit (cf. 1 Cor. 13) - because it is Spirit-filled, we find oneness of mind and purpose (homothumadon)... likewise the concrete acts of loving sacrifice... 2. A committed Church v. 42 - NASB: they were continually devoted to (proskarterountes) - literally, the word means: clinging tightly to... will not let go - it was a total commitment... a continuous commitment... a daily commitment - in their commitment, we find enthusiasm and great desire
