Presentation Outline: Introduction of the tablet revolution and the guest speakers Speakers Name Content of Speech Jeremiah Wong When you hear the word tablet, what do you associate it with? These days, a tablet is more than just a pill you pop into your mouth, its something you can touch and interact with. Daphne Tan Thats right, as we all know, the Tablet has integrated into our daily lives we use it for entertainment, business etc. But do you know in the medical world, its also widely used? Thats why today were very pleased to have Dr Serene Jean, Dr Cheryl Cheong & Ms Wendy Yee on our set, to share with us how the Tablet technology has revolutionized the medical world. Dr Jean, I understand that in your line of profession, you use the Tablet very often. How has it benefited your line of work? As we all know, us gynaecologists have to be on standby 24/7. So the Tablet allows me to monitor my patients on the go. What do you mean by on the go? Is your tablet always connected to the database of your hospital? Yes, my tablet is synched to the hospitals database so this allows me to access my patients records and diagnosis even when Im not in the office. Thus allowing me to respond quickly to emergencies, which is critical in my line of work. Before we had tablets, our reports were mainly on paper and searching for a particular report or diagnosis was timeconsuming. Especially during emergencies, time was a key factor. Were talking about seconds here, not minutes.

Jeremiah Wong Back to where we left off, with the understanding of the usage of tablet in hospitals, lets move on to the usage of tablet in medical schools. Ms Yee, as a medical student how then has the tablet benefitted your learning back in Zanyang Medical University? In my university, most students use laptops to access the schools resources and textbooks for reference. But I have chosen to use tablets, as it is lightweight and much more portable. I used to carry a laptop and some bulky medical textbooks to school, but now, the tablet is all I need. All you need? Does that means that you do not need textbooks unlike the others? Yes, the tablet not only acts as my textbook, it can also do what my textbook cannot. As Im currently reading Pharmacology, the tablet acts as an interactive encyclopaedia that allows me to access my schools resources and relevant applications to learn more about drugs and their uses. Oh I didnt know that there are such applications available! Can you give us some examples? Theres this application called Mobile Pharm Phlash (Aaron Stringfield, 2011), which is a pharmacology flashcard application designed by FA Davis. This company is well known for its medical text and drug guides for nurses, which highlight drug features of some of the most frequently prescribed drugs.

Cheryl Cheong In my profession, I also use apps like the Visible Body 3D Anatomy Atlas (Wan, 2011). With this 3D anatomy, I can make my diagnosis clearer through the illustrations to my patients. These illustrations also provide patients with visual aids where they can identify affected areas and ask questions. Theres also this application called CDTOG (Current Diagnosis and Treatment Obstetrics and Gynecology) (Lewis, 2011) which covers over 1000 diseases and thoroughly illustrated with informative drawings and clinical photographs. I use this to enhance my patients understanding of their illness and at times for my own reference too. Other than serving as an interactive encyclopedia, I understand that the tablet is also useful as an administrative tool. In fact personally, I use my tablet to update myself on current news and organize my documents. What about you Jeremiah? For me, I can harness the organizing capabilities of the tablet in scheduling my various appointments. I understand some tablet also has 3G wireless capabilities and this has benefited doctors in terms of their consultation with their patients. Is this true for you, Dr Cheong? Yes, actually this is an up-and-coming technology we hope to harness in tablets. We hope to be able to hold online consultations with patients through the internet where they are at the comforts of their own homes. This is especially useful for patients who are bedridden or not very mobile. However, it is still in its experimental stages in Singapore.

SKIT 2: Depicts how online consultations between patient and doctor can be held using tablets Casts: Daphne Tan as Doctor Jeremiah Wong as Patient Conclusion: Jeremiah Wong Emphasising how the use of tablet can improve the medical status of Singapore using an example of how the Daphne Tan tablet revolution have entered the medical college in New York. As what Dr Cheong has mentioned, this technology is indeed worth looking into and we hope that in the near future, this technology can help facilitate and advance the state of the medical world in Singapore. Yes, in fact, this tablet revolution has already made its way in to Weill Cornell Medical College in New York (Newswise, 2011). In a recent press release by the college, titled iPad Revolution for Weill Cornell Medical Students It is said that starting in fall 2011 semester, all incoming first- and second-year students are being provided with a new iPad 2 in place of the printed course notes and texts used by most students around the country. The students there will now be able to download course materials, see video or hear audio recordings of lectures, submit electronic course evaluations, access their grades, collaborate with other students, and save their notes and coursework. One of the students there mentioned that "With an iPad, it will be easy to keep personal and patient records updated in real-time as you're meeting with the patient, checking reference information, and even looking up body-scan images on the fly, while making rounds,"
