Pool: Saturday 15 October the pool will be open between 10am-2pm only. Salvation: Army Band from Shoalhaven will be performing at Moyne Aged Care Sunday 16 October from 1pm to 1:30pm for residents and guests. If weather is fine it will be in the grounds but if raining it will be in the Kanyana Centre. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy the music. There will be no chapel on that day due to the concert. Showgirls: Zone Final judging is being held in Canowindra 25 February 2012 (the first event for the post fire Auditorium at the Services Club). To raise funds for the event a Trivia Night is being organised for Friday 28 October at the Bowling Club. Get a table of 8 together and enjoy showing off your knowledge of the trivial and absurd. Tickets are only $15pp which includes some tasty nibbles. Tickets are available from Bill Pauls Carpet Centre before Wed 26 October. Dont leave it to the last minute, or youll miss out on all the fun! Exams: good luck to all high school students who will be sitting their Higher School Certificate exams next week, and the Year 10 students getting a hands on experience on what to expect for the School Certificate with their trials starting next week also. Fire: the Tech Drawing Room at Canowindra High was damaged by fire on Monday morning. Thanks to the efforts of Bill Wilson & Kath Balcombe who were at school at the time, structural damage appears to be minimal and no student work or resources were lost. Fire investigators & detectives have confirmed the cause was an electrical fault in the wall near the door. Many thanks to Rob Ellis and Mick Vitnell who gave up their last day of holidays yesterday to clean up the site. It is hoped to have repairs underway this week.

POOL OPENING The pool opened to a cool day on Monday, that however didnt deter a couple of local lads having a dip. Captain Lycra (above) pulled on his cossies for a dive, whilst Nick Carne of Comprinting did a run and jump. Both swam a couple of quick laps before hyperthermia set in. Tuesday saw about 20 people brave the new season which demonstrated that Jarrods plan of opening early was a good decision, and activities and barbecues will be planed throughout the season. Council have also been busy with installing new portable amenities so that work can start on remodelling the existing toilets and change rooms, in keeping with the draft plan that was presented by Joe Lantz a couple of weeks ago. Swimming Club will start a week earlier than usual on Friday 28 October, and registrations will be done on line as required by Swimming NSW and your rego information will be sent out to you shortly via e mail. Registrations this year will be $65, plus a credit card payment fee of about 60 cents. For those without access to the internet there will be registration days at the pool before the season starts. Also a date for the future: Canowindra will be holding their annual Swimming Carnival on Sunday 29 January so be prepared for some carnival action.

ROAD TRAUMA WORKSHOP Over the past two months, Eugowra Police have been organising a Road Trauma Workshop to take part within the Eugowra Community. The workshop will take place at the Eugowra SES base on Noble Street, Eugowra. The workshop is designed to help educate young drivers and experienced drivers in a range of topics such as, Road Trauma, Road Rules and Safe Driver Tips. In addition, Police and Ambulance personnel will give first hand experiences of what occurs at a collision scene and the effects it has on families, friends and emergency crews attending. Attendees will also be presented with real photos and footage from serious collisions. SCHOOL LEAVERS GUIDE Young people leaving school at the end of this year can access a guide to help them find a career. Federal Member for Calare John Cobb is distributing the School Leavers Guide 2011 which outlines a variety of options for students aiming to enter the workforce or extend their education and training. Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said the publication was a valuable tool to help school leavers in the Cabonne Shire to consider their options for 2012. Year 12 students are just about to begin their Higher School Certificate exams and I know there will also be many other students hoping to obtain apprenticeships or traineeships next year, Cr Dowling said. This guide will answer many of their questions and help point them in the right direction to obtain detailed information about their preferred career options. The publication examines subjects such as exploring opportunities, education and training options, working while you learn, finding employment and financial and other support. It provides information on apprenticeships, TAFE courses and tertiary education, as well as Centrelink options, eligibility criteria for Youth Allowance, rental assistance, health care cards, Higher Education Loan Program, Commonwealth loans and scholarships, Abstudy, Indigenous Youth Leadership Program and Indigenous Youth Mobility Program. There are also sections on how to obtain a tax file number and a Medicare card, and enrolling to vote. Hard copies of the School Leavers Guide 2011 can be obtained from Mr Cobbs electoral offices at Orange and Bathurst or by phoning 6361 7138 (Orange) or 6331 2561 (Bathurst). The guide can also be downloaded from Mr Cobbs website www.johncobb.com.au and from Cabonne Councils website at www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au/news/ pages/8023.html

RARE AND CURIOUS DINNER Rare & Curious: Governor Macquaries Collectors Chest is the topic of guest speaker Elizabeth Ellis (above) at a dinner to be held by the AFGW (Australian Federation of Graduate Women) Central West Branch on Thursday 20 October at the Japanese Garden. Elizabeth Ellis, OAM is the inaugural Emeritus Curator at the Mitchell Library and an Honorary Associate with the Department of History, the University of Sydney and is responsible for one of the librarys rarest acquisitions: Governor Macquaries Collectors; Chest. Her latest book Rare & Curious is the secret history of Governor Macquaries chest, a cabinet of curiosities associated with our longest serving 19th century governor, Lachlan Macquarie. Elizabeth will describe the chests travels and its return to Australia after languishing in a Scottish castle until the late twentieth century. Here at the Mitchell Library, Sydney, its contents of amazing arrays of New South Wales natural history specimens, collected in Australia for Governor Macquarie in around 1818, continue to evoke the same sense of wonder and delight as they did almost 200 years ago. Elizabeths book holds tales of ambition and failure, friendship and betrayal, intrigue and mystery all played out against the backdrop of the frontier landscape of colonial Australia in the early decades of the white settlement. President Anne Holloway and the committee of the AFGW Central West Branch look forward to welcoming members and friends to this dinner at the Japanese Garden at 6pm for 6.30pm. RSVP Ms Marianne Payten 6342 6716 or Anne Holloway 6345 1819 by 14 October. Proceeds from this dinner provide funds for the 2011 HSC Scholarship of $2,000 which will be awarded in the New Year. Applications for this scholarship are available from committee member Jenny White ph 6342 3847 or email auntjen@hotmail.com.au Applications from females from a Central West school or TAFE, with the highest ATAR intending to further her tertiary education close 31 January 2012.

CABONNE COUNTRYWIDE FESTIVAL The second Essential Energy Cabonne Countrywide festivities will be held on the weekend of 12-13 November 2011. After the wide success of the village festivities held earlier this year, community groups are already planning their events to encourage not only visitors from outside the area, but give residents opportunities to visit villages within Cabonne and see them in all their glory. The Canowindra Historical Society plans to hold a Green Gold Festival Saturday 12 November at the Museum as part of Cabonne Countrywide Village Festival. Everyone is invited to attend the unveiling of panels and pavers at 2pm, followed by afternoon tea in the cottage grounds. Saturday evening 12 November will see the biggest and most exciting fireworks display at the Molong Recreational Oval that the region has ever seen. Sponsored by Essential Energy, the Monster Display is being designed and presented by the world renowned pyrotechnic master Mr Steve Lee. It is anticipated that not only residents of the Shire but indeed families from surrounding villages, towns and cities will gather before 8.30pm at the Recreational Ground on the corner of Hill and Edwards Street for this SPECTACULAR FREE EVENING. Prior to the Fireworks Display there will be a free Sausage Sizzle for everyone in attendance and this is being sponsored by the Molong Gelato Factory. The Essential Energy Cabonne Countrywide weekend is an open invitation to everyone in the areas surrounding Cabonne Shire to come in and visit all the businesses, attractions and special places throughout the Shire. On Saturday the Rec Ground will echo to the sound of gunfire and horses as the Lachlan Living History Group bring back the days of Cobb and Co and Bushrangers. At 4pm a clinic will be held on the Skate Park and those interested are encouraged to bring their bikes, skateboards and scooters for the prize filled evening.
