1. Medini means earth; from Sanskrit Medas/medassu in Kannada 2. Medini Jyotishya is then related to earthly matters/whole of earth; generally applicable to the earth i.e., social groups/societies/nation-states etc 3. It is also related to physical/natural phenomenon that occur on the earth 4. Of the Skandhatrayas, this branch is closely related to the Samhita portion 5. Samhita means collection; it also means essence. As in Rigveda Samhita or Brihatsamhita 6. Varaha Mihira is the most acclaimed of mundane astrologists Mundane astrology, Astro-meteorology are concentrated here. So we will try to understand the effects of planets on: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. Role of comets, eclipses, earthquakes etc Varahamihira Varahamihiras Brihatsamhita is the first well-known and most comprehensive work that is available to us today. For the first time Acharya Varahamihira looked at the whole of India as a single entity and allotted various places to different rashis/constellations. In other words, he classified people according to their nature and character. Acharya also speaks about erecting annual charts for the nation and shows us how to construct the planetary kingdom for that particular year. He also talks about how to predict rains, mishaps, price fluctuations, wars and such other issues. One of the most useful contributions of Varahamihira to Medini Jyotishya is Koorma Chakra. The Chakra can be used effectively to predict mundane happenings in different directions of the country. It has also been shown effective in money matters. It is to be noted however that Koorma chakra is basically useful for India or more specifically Indian subcontinent. If we want to take countries that lie outside the continent of Asia, then we have to rely on Ptolemy, father of western astrology. Charts and Points to be considered 1. Horoscope of the concerned country with all associated charts like Navamsa, Dasamsa etc and Ashtakavarga: any chart related to Constitution like the Republic Day chart for India 2. Charts erected at the time of oath taking or coronation as the case may be.

IISreemII 3. Horoscope of the Hindu New Year that is Chaandramaana Yugadi. Even for other countries, this horoscope can be erected. (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada chart but, Sun and Moon together in Meena should be taken) 4. Sankramana charts for chara rashis (1, 4, 7 10) i.e., Mesha, Karkataka, Tula and Makara. This is also known as Soorya Vidhi charts when charts for all the 12 sankramanas are made. 5. Horoscopes for the Full and New Moon are also utilised 6. Planetary cabinet 7. Role of Sun, Moon and Mars 8. Role of eclipses 9. Role of comets 10. Earthquakes 11. Sapta Nadi Chakra, and 12. Ardra Pravesha Chakra Some controversies and Problems 1. There is lot of confusion about when the foundational chart of a country has to be erected. For example, if we take India whose history is clouded, when did it come in to being? With some justification, August 14/15 0000hr can be taken. In matters of government, constitutional issues should 26th Jan 1950 be considered is a matter of debate and research needs to be done. Similarly, as far as UK is concerned, some take 1st Jan 1800 while others consider 25th Dec 1066 at 12:00 hours. The debate goes on. 2. While predicting regular astrological principles are made use of. Thus, yogas, MD-AD-PD, PAC etc., are considered. The problem starts with Dasas, however. According to Parasara, a full or complete Dasa cycle is of 120 years duration. So which dasa is running for a country like UK or USA? 3. Many a times, especially when we go back to ancient times, time on which foundation chart is to be erected remains unclear. 4. While considering the charts of important national leaders also care should be exercised. Many a leaders do not give out their correct birth time for fear of misuse. Charan Singh, Morarji Desai, Rajiv Gandhi and even A B Vajapyee, MM Singh are some examples. 5. Even when modern events are not without dispute. For example, Japan had three constitutions in 50 years or so. A student of Medini Jyotishya should have wide knowledge of history, mythology, international relations, social and political issues of various countries. Many a times even the proverbs and legends, folklore also give fruitful clues as to the mundane matters. Vyakti, kaala and desha are equally important.
