Idaho State ATV Annual Meeting
The annual state meeting took place last month and new officers were elected, please check out page 2 for your elected officials. Incase you havent heard yet I was elected as the Vice President, and cant wait to serve all Idaho OHV enthusiast. There is no doubt that legislative issues will keep us busy, with out first one being the Interim ATV Task that has been established to look at Idaho Fish and Games Motorized Rule. As many of you know this issue started last year, it is now back in the forefront and will surely get lots of attention. Dave Claiborne (Boise ATV Club) and Mark Sauerwald (Mtn Home ATV Club) are leading the push from the motorize perspective. One of the key things that I have heard in the past year is what has the Idaho State ATV Association done for us . us being state ATV clubs. Many representatives from the OHV community (Dave Claycomb from Idaho Parks and Recreation, Sandra Mitchell from Idaho Recreation Council, and Adena Cook from Blue Ribbon Coalition) were are the state meeting and each one of them had great things to say about the state association and how we now have a voice in state issues affecting OHV travel. Prior to the formation of the state association, OHV users were seen as unorganized and no single voice. With the formation of the ISATVA we definitely have a voice!

Here is a great website to find ATV trails across the US. As of today Idaho has the most tracks loaded, so if you are looking for some great rides to some maybe new places you need to check out http:// www.everytrail.com Once you have accessed the page, click on find trips icon, from there you can filter on ATV rides and then on the state of your choice. When you select the trail that you wish to view, there are many with pictures also. You can download GPS tracks and also upload tracks.

4 Mountain Home ATV Club News September Meeting Picnic in the Park

Oct 2011

It was another wonderful September after in Idaho, and what better than to spend it with friends enjoying some great food. A special thanks to those that showed up earlier to halp Lynette and Lee getting everything setup. Just as we had it looking nice with tablecloths on the tables, as storm rolled in and the wind played havoc with the decorations.

After some great food and socializing it was time to get down to some serious games, and if you wasnt there you sure missed some hilarious stuff.

There always seems to be water game, and it is very entertaining and as always it was a lot of fun. After the water game it was time to see who had the best balancing/coordination.

It was another great time, a special thanks to Lynette for always putting together a first class event. For those that wasnt able to make it, you can always see plenty of other pictures on the Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/mhatvclub ~Rusty~

Winter Riding Tips

Oct 2011

With a dusting on the mountains this weekend, it only means one thing . Old Man Winters almost here! If this is your first winter being a member of the Mountain Home ATV Club you should know there is NO need to lock your ATV in the shed as we ride all year (except Dec) round. While lots of winter goodies (handlebar mittens, heated seats, windshields, etc.) can make your ATV ride more comfortable during winter riding, above all you have to stay dry to comfortable during winter ATVing. Snow riding to me is a fun experience, here are some simple things, as well as things to think about: The ATV- make sure its up to the test, change the oil, check the cooling system, basically fix anything that you would expect to break. Speaking of brakes, make sure the brakes are up to par. Pay attention to your engine, if it is air-cooled, remove snow accumulations from the fins, or the radiator on water-cooled motors, you will overheat and engine quickly covered with snow, sounds funny huh, but the snow insulates the engine not allowing the heat to dissipate properly. Think about how and igloo works. Bring extra gas when riding in snow as you will use more than normal. Tires: If you ride often in the deep snow you want real aggressive mud type tires (Super Swampers, Realtors & ITP 589's work the best in deep snow), the taller the better! Most of the club riding in the winter is only through a couple of inches of snow so you really want need the more aggressive ones most of the time. 2wd of 4wd? 4x4 is the best option here, though we have had some riders accompany us on 2wd quads, they fallow the 4wds who are plowing and smoothing out the ruts. The 2wd ATV's low center of gravity is the biggest downfall in deep snow, also the lack of a front differential. Dress warm! No cotton, like jeans, they absorb the water from the snow, and you will freeze your @$$ off. Snowboarding, skiing, or snow-mobiling gear is the best, but if you haven't got access to the right stuff, dress in layers with rain gear over the top. For the head, the helmet is great, with a baklava and goggles; your face should stay warm, well warm enough. Ski gloves with Gore-Tex work good, or snow-mobiling mittens are the best for keeping the fingers warm, however they do cut down on your dexterity, but then again so will frostbite. Deal with it! What to expect? Well, if you are riding on trails where quads have been before, its pretty easy, just get in the ruts and go for some slot car racing. Breaking new ground? Have the biggest & badest ATV (we will figure this out when the time comes) in front plowing, a sometimes-slow chore, lean back and pull up the front end on the higher stuff. Make sure to watch out for deep snowdrifts, or down trees covered with snow, they tend to cause major surprises! Stick to routs you know, or have been on when there was no snow, then you wont get lost (as quickly) and freeze to death. Freezing to death sucks! Bring water to rehydrate yourself, you would be surprised how much work deep snow riding really is. Make sure you keep your water in an area to protect it from freezing. Beer is a diuretic, it makes you dehydrated and you have to stop and pee more, not fun in the cold. Be persistent, keep trying, you will make it . Pay attention to your gas level, know where you are going, take a map and GPS, they help, things look different covered in snow, and visibility is usually limited. So dont be locking up those quads this winter come out an enjoy some scenic rides with us this winter.

Mountain Home ATV Club Sponsored Soccer Team

Oct 2011
The Mountain Home ATV Club recently sponsored a youth soccer team through our local Parks and Recreation Department. I have been fortunate enough to be able to attend a couple of their games, it is so rewarding knowing that the club has been able to sponsor such a great program and to see our youth enjoying themselves so much.

We got the idea from Tom Glass (Thanks Tom) from an article he sent out a couple of month ago, about getting involved in our local community.

1. I will respect the rights of all recreationalists to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. 2. I will respect public and private property. 3. I will park considerately, taking no more space than needed, without blocking other vehicles, and without impeding access to trails. 4. I will keep to the right when meeting another recreationalist. Yield the right-of-way to traffic moving uphill. 5. I will slow down and use caution when approaching or overtaking another. 6. I will respect designated areas, trail-use signs and established trails. 7. When stopping, I will not block the trail. 8. I will not disturb wildlife. 9. I will avoid areas posted for the protection of feeding wildlife. 10. I will not litter and will pack out everything I pack in. 11. I realize that my destination objective and travel speed should be determined by my equipment, ability, the terrain, weather, and traffic on the trail. In case of emergency, I will volunteer assistance. 12. I will not interfere with or harass others. I recognize that people judge all trail users by my actions.
