Se mai foloseşte în engleză şi cu vb. care arată o aptitudine.
- Could you ride well at that time? (Călăreai bine pe vremea aceea?)
- Could he ski when he was young? (Ştia să schieze când era tânăr?)

De obicei, se foloseşte a lot (of) în propoziţiile afirmative în loc de much sau many:

GRADELE DE COMPARAŢIE ALE ADJECTIVELOR
1. adjectivele de o silabă formează comparativul adăugând ER şi
superlativul adăugând EST:
high(înalt) - higher(mai înalt) - (the) highest(cel mai înalt) :despre lucruri
the younger of the two mai...din ei doi(câteodată şi cel mai din doi)
many(mulţi,multe)

Folosirea prepoziţiilor
from(de,din,de pe) se foloseşte doar în propoziţiile care nu exprimă ideea de existenţă
in, on, under, behind în celelalte propoziţii
The dress in the wardrobe is blue. Rochia din dulap este albastră.
She wants to take the dress from the wardrobe. Vrea să ia rochia din dulap.
The mouse on the cheese looks very clever. Şoarecele de pe caşcaval pare f. deştept.
My mother wants to take the mouse from the cheese. Mama vrea să ia şoarecele de pe
The elephant under the bad is a toy elephant. Elefantul de sub pat este un elefant de j.

IMPORTANT :
I didn’t play tennis well, did I? N-am jucat tenis bine, aşa-i?
Dacă momentul(last months; three days ago) sau acţiunea este localizată sau dacă textul este de
domeniul unei relatări, reportaj se foloseşte Trecutul S. Deci, Past Tense arată un moment
determinat(terminat în trecut) al acţiunii de cele mai multe ori precizat prin adverbe de timp
precis iar Present Perfect are ca funcţie principalăindicarea anteriorităţii(moment început în
trecut şi continuat şi în prezent sau termin. f. recent).

PARTICIPIUL TRECUT
Participiul trecut al verbelor regulate se formează întocmai ca şi trecutul lor.
Part. trecut al vb. neregulate se învaţă din lista de vb. neregulate de la pg. 358.
ADVERBUL
Adverbul se formează de obicei prin adăugarea terminaţiei ly adjectivului din care provin dar
există şi adverbe care au aceeaşi formă cu adjectivul cărora le corespunde. În cazul adăugării
terminaţiei ly intervine o schimbare de sens. Ex.: hard= din greu, intens

ATENŢIE: SHALL şi WILL se pot inversa între persoanele I, II sau III pt. a exprima pt. pers
I ideea de voinţă, promisiune, hotărâre iar pt. pers. II şi III ideea de necesitate, ordin, obligaţie.
Ex.: I will do my best. Îţi promit să fac tot posibilul.
You shall drink that glass of milk, even if you don’t like it. Îţi poruncesc să bei p...
I won’t explain him the rule again. Nu vreau să-i explic regula din nou.
I won’t see him again. Nu vreau să-l mai văd. ( atenţie: will nu shall)
TO BE GOING TO
a. se poate folosi în locul viitorului cu shall şi will:
He is going to leave for London. Va pleca la Londra.
b. exprimă intenţia:
I am going to take one suit-case with me.(Am de gând să iau un sg. geamantan cu mine)

Ex.: Ai(aţi) citit cartea aceasta? Have you read this book?
N-au plecat încă, nu-i aşa? They haven’t gone yet, have they?
Forma III a vb. to be este been; a nu se confunda din acest motiv PPS cu alte
timpuri. Ex.: De când sunt prieteni? How long have they been friends?
Sunt prieteni de ani de zile. They have been friends for years.(since 1960)
How long(since when) has she had that car? De când are maşina aceea?
She has had it since she graduated. O are de când a absolvit facultatea.
She has had it since she has worked in this office. O are de când lucrează în acest birou.
Pt. diferenţa dintre PPS şi TS vezi ex. 247/p.208 din Engl. fără prof.
How long have you been teaching in this school? De când predai...
2. Ce-ai făcut ieri dimineaţă? TS(did) acţ. trecută încheiată şi timpul precizat exact
3. Ce-ai făcut toată săptămâna aceasta? PPS interval de timp încă neîncheiat etc.
Expresii uzuale: big şi large se referă la volum, capacitate sau cantitate iar
great la importanţă

Prepoziţii şi expresii:
There is a piece of cheese on a plate on the kitchen table. (Este o bucată de brânză, pe o farfurie, pe masa din bucătărie.)
There are several chairs round the kitchen table.(În jurul mesei din bucătărie sunt mai multe scaune)
Below(sub) the kitchen floor there is a cellar(pivniţa) and above(deasupra) the kitchen ceiling, there is the garret(podul).
The cupboard is against one of the kitchen walls and opposite the cupboard there is the clock.
(Dulapul se află lipit de unul dintre pereţii bucătăriei şi faţă în faţă cu dulapul se află ceasornicul.)

My sons are twins. I don’t always know which is which. Nu îi deosebesc întotdeauna.
You boil the eggs while I toast the bred! Tu fiebe ouăle în timp ce eu prăjesc pâinea.

Compuşii lui some, any, no + thing, where, body, one (+ else)
EXPRESII UZUALE:
some: se foloseşte în propoziţiile afirmative şi se traduce prin nişte, ceva, câţiva, câteva,
puţin(ă). Ex.: There is some tea left(A mai rămas nişte(puţin) ceai).
any: în prop. interogative şi negative = nişte, câteva, câţiva, puţin(ă), vreo respectiv=nu, nici un,
nici o. Ex.: Is there any milk in that bottle? E puţin lapte în sticlă?
any în prop. afirmative = oricare, orice Ex.:Take any record you like.
no se foloseşte în propoziţiile negative, cu verbul la formă afirmativă şi se traduce prin nu, nici
un, nici o, ca şi not any.
EXPRESII UZUALE:

something = ceva
somewhere = undeva
anywhere = undeva,nicăieri,oriunde
nothing = nimic

ATENŢIE:

Când pronumele interogativ sau subs. precedat de un adjectiv interogativ este subiect, predicatul
din propoziţia interogativă rămâne la forma obişniută (cea din propoziţiile
afirmative):What impressed you most?
Când sunt complemente directe, interogativul se formează cu do, does sau did:
The picture (statue, painting) which (that) I noticed was very expensive.
Pronumele de întărire se poate plasa după subiect(I myself read it)când accentuiază sensul sau
la sfârşitul propoziţiei(I read it myself)
EXPRESII UZUALE:
Nici mie nu-mi place piperul. I don’t like pepper either. Neither do I like pepper.
(atenţie se inversează)
Nici el nu poate comite astfel de erori. Neither (Nor) can he commit such errors.

În rom. se poate folosi trecut - prezent(şi t.-t.) dar în engleză numai trecut - trecut.
She told us that the old man had been run over by a car. atenţie had been este TPS
I told them that I had been visiting their parents for many years. TPCont.
Când în rom. se foloseşte trecut- trecut (sau trecut- prezent dar este o acţ. trecută
anterioară unei alte acţ. trecute şi neterminată) în engleză se foloseşte Trecut-Trecut
Perfect Simplu sau Cont.
Regula e uşor de dedus pt. că prin astfel de fraze se exprimă anterioritatea(pt. care se folos. TPS sau TPC)
În rom. se foloseşte trecut - viitor iar în engl. se foloseşte trecut - Future in the Past.

Mi-a spus că are mai multe romane englezeşti. several se foloseşte când poate fi

Diferite excepţii:
2. După verbe ca to see, to hear, to watch, to feel urmeză fie infinitivul scurt, fie forma în ing:
3. După verbe ca to want, to wish, to expect, to like poate urma un acuzativ+infinitivul cu to.
Ex.: She wanted him to go. Ea voia ca el să plece.
Această construcţie se foloseşte atunci când acţiunea celui de-al doilea verb este făcută de altă
persoană decât subiectul primului verb. Dacă acuzativul se omite, se subînţelege că acţiunea
celui de-al doilea verb este înfăptuită de subiect.
4. După verbe ca to belive, to consider, to think, to report se foloseşte aceeaşi construcţie (She
belives him to be a good student) cu deosebirea că ideea poate fi exprimată şi în felul următor:
She belives that he is a good student.

It’s a ten minutes walk to their villa. atenţie: „it’s” nu „there is”
Băiatului îi este greu = It’s difficult for the boy = E greu pt. băiat
Pronumele relative whom, which(la acuzativ) se pot omite, prepoziţia care le precede plasându-
se la sfârşit:
He shouted himself hoarse=He shouted until he became hoarse=A strigat până a răguşit.
You ought to pay her a visit = S-ar cuveni să-i faci o vizită.
You ought to have visited her from time to time = S-ar fi cuvenit să o vizitezi din când în când.
You shouldn’t buy so many handkerchiefs = N-ar trebui să cumperi atâtea batiste.
Tom shouldn’t have bought that tie = Tom, n-ar fi trebuit să cumpere cravata aceea.
The doctor must have been detained in the hospital = Dr. trebuie să fi fost reţinut la spital.
He is to have a talk with the architect, isn’t he? Urmează să stea de vorbă cu arhitectul, nu?
They are to meet and have a talk about the plans for the house= Urmează să se întâlnească şi ...
You needn’t have driven me to the station = N-ar fi trebuit să mă duci la gară cu maşina.
Unii vorbitori de limba engleză, în vorbirea familiară, omit pronumele cu funcţie de subiect.
Ex.: Thought you’d gone without me. Am crezut că aţi plecat fără mine.
Seems rather tedious to me. Mi se pare cam plicticos.

PREPOZIŢIE= parte de vorbire neflexibilă care exprimă raporturi sinctactice de dependenţă între părţile
diferite ale unei propoziţii
atenţie: had = a trebuit, trebuia trecut (interog., neg. cu did have,didn’t have)
Walking about the park I was listening to the birds which were singing merrily.
The Present Participle is sometimes treated as a noun. In such cases it may be preceded by the
definite or the indefinite article or by an adjective.
Ex.: M-am gândit să m-ă duc la un muzeu=I have thought of going to a museum.
1. cu adverbe care exprimă un timp nedefinit sau o frecvenţă ca: ever, never, always,
sometimes, often, seldom, rarely, usuallly, frequently, repeatedly
Ex.: L-am întâlnit adesea pe la expoziţii. I have often met him at some exhibitions.
I have been learning English for four years/since 1971(since I entered this school).
4. când acţiunea menţionată s-a efectuat în cadrul unui interval de timp încă neîncheiat, care
mai continuă şi în prezent(şi eventual şi în viitor); se folos. cu today, this week...
5. când acţiunea s-a efectuat(şi terminat) foarte de curând; se folos. cu: lately, just, recently, in
the last few days/weeks, of late
În ultima vreme nu l-am prea văzut. I have not seen much of him lately.
6. când acţiunea(neprecizată în timp, dar desigur de domeniul trecutului, deci încheiată) are
rezultate, consecinţe, efecte vizibile în prezent:

Îţi voi împrumuta/Îţi împrumut cartea după ce o voi fi citit/ o voi citi/ o citesc eu.
I shall/will lend you the the book after/when I have read it.
Evident, în vorbirea indirectă prezent perfect se va transforma în past perfect dacă principala va fi la un timp
trecut:
Mi-a spus că va pleca la plimbare după ce va fi mâncat/ după ce mănâncă/ după ce va mânca.
He told me (that) he would go for a walk after/ when he had finished dinner.
The P. P. C. shows an action which started in the past, is continuing in the present and is likely
to continue also in the future. Se folos. cu since şi for
Ex.: My friends have been living in this town(since 1970; for 5 years).
Ex.: The boy washed and combed himself properly for his sister’s wedding.
indicarea unei acţiuni sau stări trecute începute şi terminate înaintea unei alte acţiuni trecute
ori a unui moment din trecut; se folos cu: hardly, scarcely, no sooner, before, when...
Hardly had the teacher come into the room when the pupils surrounded him.

Formarea substantivelor din verbe: the suffix added to the verb to form the noun is sometimes -
er, as in climber, sometimes -or, as in editor
Viitorul simplu(The future indefinite)
Ex.: I shall begin now. Voi începe acum

is a construction in which the subject of a certain verb which is used in the Passive Voice is also
the subject of a second verb which is in that case in the infinitive and which immediately
follows the first verb. This construction is used:
1. with verbs denoting sense perception, such as: to see, to hear, etc. and verbs
denoting mental activity, such as: to think, to consider, to know, to expect, to believe, to
suppose...

When the verb to wish is followed by an objective clause the verb in such a clause has to
be in the Past Tense:
If that verb is To Be we have to use Past Subjunctive of the verb which is were for all

Ex.: Since he did not get along very well with his brother, he set out to make his own way in the

COMPOUND ADJECTIVES
IF + WOULD
Would is used after if when we are interested in the listener’s „wish” or „will”
When wish is followed by a sentence the verb of the subordinate sentence is either in the Past
Tense or the Past Perfect Tense:
When wish is followed by the verb to be in the subordinate clause to be is used in the Past
Subjunctive, which is were in all persons:
