Magnetic Rotary Encoder Overview Finally, a rotary encoder thats rugged, easy to use, accurate, and inexpensive.
Up to now, most rotary feedback solutions were complex, often inaccurate, difficult to install, and expensive. Those days are over. Balluffs S2E Rotary BML encoder is a lower cost, more effective improvement on standard rotary encoder designs. The basic design of the S2E consists of a magnetically-encoded ring and a non-contact sensor head. This assembly installs easily and provides a quadrature output at up to 46,000 counts per revolution. An available mounting hub allows the magnet ring to be adapted to a wide range of applications. LED Home Position Indicator Aids fast set-up and position trouble shooting

Accurate The S2E is capable to providing up to 46,000 counts per revolution at speeds up to 5,200 RPM. A once-per-revolution index established on the ring provides for positional homing or revolution counting and monitoring.

Easy to Install The S2Es magnet ring can be installed directly onto virtually any rotating shaft. The sensor head is positioned adjacent to the magnet ring.

Magnetic Rotary Encoder Applications Balluffs S2E Rotary Encoder provides accurate information for a wide range of applications.

Angular Measurement The S2E provides accurate angle measurement for any apparatus that revolves around a shaft. For example, the S2E can be mounted on the spindle of a miter saw. An output signal can be sent to a digital display to give the operator an accurate visual indication of the angular position of the saw blade.

Rotary Motion to Linear Tracking The S2E provides the PLC the position information necessary for virtually all conveyor-based manufacturing operational functions such as multiple station error proofing with single station rejection. It also provides conveyor speed control monitoring. Position information provided by the S2E can also be used by the central PLC to develop software driven programmable cams.

Motor Speed Control The S2E provides the PLC with up to 46,000 counts per revolution to monitor motor speed up to 5,200 RPM. The once-per-revolution index pulse can be used to count revolutions, which allows precise control and allows the PLC to accurately monitor and control motor speed.

Magnetic Rotary Encoder How to Order BML Rotary Magnetic Encoder BML-S2E
When ordering a BML-S2E system, the following factors must be considered:

Desired positional resolution in m or counts per revolution (CPR) Maximum rotational speed of application Speed of input electronics (e.g., PLC counter card or other input device)

Position Resolution The BML-S2E is available in resolutions of ranging from 4,600 to 46,000 CPR. Higher resolution means higher accuracy, and results in more pulses for a given amount of rotational movement, and typically requires higher speed input electronics. The resolution is determined by the sensor head, and is selected in the ordering code (see table below). Resolution is not field-changeable. Maximum Rotational Speed Higher rotational speed results in higher frequency pulses on the output of the BML-S2E. Pulse frequency is also determined by position resolution; higher resolution and/or faster rotational speed = higher frequency. Speed of Input Electronics The frequency at which a counter card or digital display can accept a quadrature pulse signal is typically limited to some maximum value. This is normally expressed in kilohertz (kHz) or megahertz (mHz). The BML-S2E sensor is capable of producing output pulses at frequencies as high as 2.1 mHz. However, if the counter card is not capable of accepting pulses at this frequency, care must be taken to select a minimum edge separation value that corresponds to the maximum frequency of the counter. Mounting Hub The optional mounting hub, when used with the appropriately sized quick-disconnect (QD) bushing, provides a quick and easy method for mounting the magnet ring to rotating shafts with diameters from 0.5 to 1.5. The mounting hub allows the magnet ring to be secured to the shaft, and then rotated into the correct position. The LED on the BML-S2E sensor head provides a visual indication of home position.
