HOSPITAL VISIT MOHAMAD SAHIR BIN ZULKIFLI ME0211030365 TUANKU JAAFAR HOSPITAL, SEREMBAN

On 5th of October, in conjunction with IMU nursing week, my friends and I are required to visit Tuanku Jaafar Hospital in Seremban which is also one of IMU teaching hospitals. IMU Clinical School is also situated near this hospital. Main purpose of this visit is to familiarize student with hospital situation, the very place in which they will be working. The Mission of Hospital is to promote health through health education and promotion activities and community-based clinics, with the sharing of information with individuals, communities and other health-related agencies. Secondly, to save lives, reduce suffering and help to obtain early and full restoration services for diagnostic, curative and rehabilitative quality, efficient and effective. Lastly to, provide quality training and continuous professional development for all categories of medical, allied health and medical students. We arrived from IMU at about 8 a.m and were brought to IMU clinical school where we have a short briefing about the activities on that day. After that we were split into several groups consisting of five to six students per group. Aisyah Ismail, Hazirah, Azah, Amir, Aisyah Yusof and I are in the same group. Each group was accompanied by a sister and our groups sister is Sister Azah. In the first half of our visit, we were brought to A&E department. A&E stands for Accident and Emergency where all cases coming to the hospital should go through. Similar to other hospitals in Malaysia, this department is divided into three zones i.e. Green, Yellow and Red. Green is for stable patient. Yellow is semi-critical and Red is for Critical. During our visit there was one patient in red zone who was on ventilator. This department has its own x-ray room and pharmacy in order to keep things running smoothly in this department.

Later, we were brought to 6B ward (Female Medical Ward). Here we met another sister who was in charge in this ward, Sister Zaiton. We spent most of our visiting time here as there was confusion about our schedule on that day. This ward has 42 beds which are divided into 7 cubicles. There are two types of cubicles here; 3 acute and 4 sub-acute with each cubicles is supervised by a sister. Besides, there is one operation theater where minor surgery is done. There is also an Observation Room where they monitor newly admitted patient(s). A BiPAP, or Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure device and three ventilators are stationed in this ward. Patients admitted into this ward generally suffer from nephrotic syndrome, hypertension, diabetes, and acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma (AEBA) or undergone surgery and referral from orthopedic ward. After briefing from sister Zaiton, we were allowed to walk through the ward and have some chat with the patients. On that time, there was 28 patients and most of them are 30 years old and above. I have an opportunity to talk to a patient who happened to be of the same age as mine, a girl, science teacher-to-be who was admitted due to hypotension and suspected of dengue infection. There was also an old woman who was very talkative despite suffering from asthma. She shared her experience raising her children who became successful today. She also gave her insights about the doctors in Malaysia. Moreover, we learn how documentation of medical report is done by healthcare staff i.e doctors and nurse. We also observed how IV blood transfusion is carried out. Overall, this hospital visit did not offer me new experiences because prior to IMU, I went through numerous hospital visits during my secondary school and A-levels. But at least I learnt that different hospitals have different approach in order to provide healthcare services to the people. For me personally, the posting was not so well-organized as maybe due to shortage of staffs or the nurses were busy taking care of the patients which I respect that. However, in overall it was a good experience.
