DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (ECONOMICS)

The objective of this programme is to guide students to become high calibre economists so that they can generate and disseminate knowledge in the eld of economics. The courses taught and the preparation of the thesis or dissertation will enable students to acquire greater knowledge of economics and carry out scientic research. The award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy takes into account the comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the students and their ability to carry out independent research in their respective areas.

Admission Requirements
Candidates must possess the following qualications to be eligible to apply:

Master in Economics high cumulative grade point average from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or any institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate; or Other qualications equivalent to the Master of Economics from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia or other institutions of higher learning recognized by the Senate.

Period of Study
The period of full-time study is between six (6) to twelve (12) semesters. Part-time study is between eight (8) to fourteen (14) semesters.

Programme Structure
This programme comprises the following two modes of study: 1) Coursework and dissertation
2) Thesis (A) Coursework and Dissertation

Students under coursework and dissertation are required to pass 20 hours of core courses and 12 hours of module courses plus comprehensive examinations in three subject areas. Student will commence with research after fulfilling the coursework and comprehensive examinations requirements. Islamic Economics EPPE6514 Fiqh for Economics EPPE6524 Islamic Money Market and Capital EPPE6534 Advanced Islamic Economic Analysis Comprehensive Examination The comprehensive examination for students taking PhD (Economics) programme encompasses: Two qualifying examination in the field of economic theories, ie. Microeconomics and Macroeconomics; and Examination on area of specialization. Candidates who pass the comprehensive examination will be awarded the doctoral status. Dissertation A doctoral dissertation should not exceed 60,000 words (not including footnotes, abstract, appendices, formulae, tables, diagrams, etc). (B) Thesis A doctoral thesis should not exceed 100,000 words (not including footnotes, abstract, appendices, formulae, tables, diagrams, etc.).
