Adventure Steam
This DVD is a compilation of two programmes celebrating the 2-foot narrow gauge. The Avontuur Adventurer - The first narrow gauge train started its service in 1903. In 1920 the arrival of the first Garratt locomotive on the Avontuur line heralded an era of new Garratt construction for the South African Railways. After re-gauging the lines in Namibia, Class NG15 engines were brought to South Africa. The engine crews nicknamed them Kalaharis and the locomotives soon became very popular. They look like toys, but dont be fooled they were good workers puffing their way through the sugar fields, mountains and valleys. Narrow Gauge Superpower - A symbol of mechanical perfection, the steam locomotive is the least efficient and most romantic piece of machinery a man has ever created. Man tends to destroy other species and then put much effort to save them from extinction. It happened with elephants, rhinos and, of course, with the iron horse. Steam enthusiasts have been able to rescue a number of abandoned and decaying locomotives and wagons and restore them to their former glory. Witness the incredible power of the Garratt locomotive with its two engines sharing one boiler and one crew. Their ability to haul immensely heavy trains over rough mountainous terrain and lightly laid track is why they were the work horse of African railways, regarded a superpower among locomotives.

Cherriots of Fire
The train to the Ficksburg Cherry Festival was hauled by Reefsteamer's flagship, 25NC No. 3472 double headed with 15F No. 3016. The locos performed flawlessly and attracted the attention of many bystanders and motorists during the event. The chilly mornings made for a spectacular show of condensing steam, especially on the steep grade out of Bethlehem. By the time the sun was up, all the passengers marvelled at the spectacular scenery but unfortunately the ideal conditions were not to last. Within hours the heavens opened, turning the railway track and festival grounds into a mud pit. The next day Reefsteamers ran three trips to offer others at the festival the opportunity of experiencing steam travel from a bygone era. That evening the crews prepared the locomotives for the return trip, hoping to make an early start. The trains pulled out of Ficksburg just after 5AM. With the sun just piercing over the horizon and through the golden sandstone cliffs, one could not stop wondering if this was a paradise on earth.

Reefsteamers Great Trek (TWO DVD BOX) When steam traction made way for other means of transportation, the parting was sweet sorrow for those who remember its finest moments. The steam locomotive was too grand a machine to disappear into oblivion. A wave of steam enthusiasm swept the world and South Africa was not an exception. Reefsteamers are a group of amateur volunteers that are dedicated steam preservationists. A team of enginemen reports on duty to light up the engines and make sure that the right pressure has been generated before the departure. The locomotive has been oiled, greased and polished. With the tender filled by coal and water, the locomotive is ready for the right away signal. A steam whistle breaks the silence. The train starts to move and veritable billows of smoke shoot rhythmically from the chimneys high into the sky. The golden fields speed by, bridges whip overhead and railway crossings sing their warning songs. The train is leaving Johannesburg for the wide-open spaces of Africa. All aboard for the steam adventure of a lifetime!

Rail Victoria - The Changing 80s (TWO DVD BOX) The 1980s brought many changes to the rail system of Victoria. In conjunction with the name change of 1983, there was a change in corporate colours for locomotives and passenger rolling stock. Through running of locomotives from South Australia and New South Wales was implemented. The removal of the Guards Van from freight trains brought about a reduction in Train Crew manning from three to two. This practice was later extended to include all passenger services. The 1980s saw changes to the rail industry of Victoria, which could never be envisaged by the forefathers of years past. This 2 disc set covers only part of those turbulent years. Locomotives in the Blue & Gold mix with colour schemes of V/Line, South Australia and New South Wales, it is all here! Truly a trip down memory lane. Digitally remastered and reedited for DVD.
