Various Goings On - Volume 1

Southwest Victoria has much to offer the rail observer and we take a look at a selection of operations and locations in this beautiful region. Filmed during 2008, both broad and standard gauge operations are featured, including Warrnambool, Ballarat and Portland in the far southwest corner of Victoria. We observe V/Line passenger services at Warrnambool hauled by the mighty N Class locomotives. The size of this motive power can be appreciated as we see them maneuver around the short trains used for these services. In addition to passenger services, the weekday container freight operation is also featured. At the time of filming, the service was in the hands of rail operator El Zorro. This situation was soon to change as El Zorro were to lose this operation to Pacific National only a short time after these scenes were taken. We see an evening service preparing for departure to Melbourne North Dynon. Time is taken to look at the grand regional railway station that is Ballarat. Whilst passenger services are largely in the hands of V/Line's Velocity trains, there is still much of a railway atmosphere to be observed. In 2008, the original signal boxes and signal gantries still stand, though they are sadly out of use and have seen better days. Bonus footage is included.

Adventure Steam
This DVD is a compilation of two programmes celebrating the 2-foot narrow gauge. The Avontuur Adventurer - The first narrow gauge train started its service in 1903. In 1920 the arrival of the first Garratt locomotive on the Avontuur line heralded an era of new Garratt construction for the South African Railways. After re-gauging the lines in Namibia, Class NG15 engines were brought to South Africa. The engine crews nicknamed them Kalaharis and the locomotives soon became very popular. They look like toys, but dont be fooled they were good workers puffing their way through the sugar fields, mountains and valleys. Narrow Gauge Superpower - A symbol of mechanical perfection, the steam locomotive is the least efficient and most romantic piece of machinery a man has ever created. Man tends to destroy other species and then put much effort to save them from extinction. It happened with elephants, rhinos and, of course, with the iron horse. Steam enthusiasts have been able to rescue a number of abandoned and decaying locomotives and wagons and restore them to their former glory. Witness the incredible power of the Garratt locomotive with its two engines sharing one boiler and one crew. Their ability to haul immensely heavy trains over rough mountainous terrain and lightly laid track is why they were the work horse of African railways, regarded a superpower among locomotives.

Steaming Under African Skies

The Under African Skies event was a hands-on experience for steam enthusiasts from all over the world. All of the working Sandstone narrow gauge steam fleet was operational at one time or another allowing enthusiasts to enjoy a variety of engines on the spectacular Sandstone Estate system. Up to nine locomotives could be seen operating at any time! Enthusiasts had to prepare their engine themselves and were provided with a suitable load for the experience. Photographers, in fact, had a special time as many of the preserved motor vehicles were used to accessories the rail photographs making for that unique Sandstone touch. Under African Skies ended one day before the Cosmos Festival and to cap-off the previous two weeks proceedings a world record attempt for the longest steam hauled 2ft narrow gauge train was successfully run. With four locomotives (three of them Garratt), 48 wagons and an estimated load of 475 tons this was certainly another one for the record books. During the Cosmos Festival an intensive train service was run using NGG16s, 113 & 153, the Lawley, the Fowler, Sandy and the O&K. In addition to the passenger trains, a special military train had been configured featuring specially camouflaged wagons and loaded with military vehicles and weapons.

Steam Loco Safari Tours Drakensburg Explorer 2006 (THREE DVD BOX) This three-disc set covers the 18-day steam tour to South Africa from the 21st May to 7th June 2006. The tour group lead by David Rodgers has operated enthusiasts' rail tours to the country since the mid 1990s. This year, as the name implies, a sequel to the highly successful 2005 tour was organised. Although some routes and locomotive classes were identical to those featured in 2005, there were some notable differences; in all, 11 classes of steam locomotives saw service. Krugersdorp - Magaliesburg: 12AR & 15F 4-8-2s / Springs - Bethal: 12AR & 15F 4-8-2s / Springs Bethlehem - Ficksburg: 15F 4-8-2 & 25NC 4-8-4 / Pietermaritzburg - Thornville: GF 4-6-2 + 2-6-4 / Pietermaritzburg - Donnybrook - Creighton - Riverside: GF 4-6-2 + 2-6-4 & 19D 4-8-2 / Ixopo: NGG11 2-6-0 + 0-6-2 / George - Knysna line: 7A 4-8-0, 19B 4-8-2 & 24 2-8-4 / George - Outeniqua: GEA 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 / Camfer - Oupad: GMA 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 / Snyberg - Toorwater: 19D 4-6-2 This programme covers the tour from start to finish, and from a well balanced perspective, namely most photographic runbys, lineside footage, servicing stops and varied sequences from on board the train, which provide stunning views of varied scenery in all of five provinces. Twin Steel Through Nambia 1991 - 2008 (TWO DVD BOX) Previously known as South West Africa, Nambia is a vast, sparsely populated country, well known for its rugged desert scenery, large game parks and wilderness areas. Since steam traction had been withdrawn relatively early in 1960, the country was seldom visited by railway enthusiasts. In 1998 the Union Limited Tours, based in Cape Town, operated the first cross border steam tour to Namibia since 1960. Hauled by two oil burning class 19D 4-8-2 locomotives, the two week tour covered an incredible route of over 5000 km from Cape Town to Walvis bay and back. On board footage and line side action is catered for on both sides of the border. In view of severe logistical obstacles encountered during the course of the 1998 steam safari, it seemed unlikely that another such operation would be possible. However, in 2004, the UK based Railway Touring Company chartered the Union Limited train set for another and final steam trip in Namibia. We cover the majority of this journey, once again hauled by two oil burning class 19Ds. As a variation, the final two days of the tour in the Western Cape, featuring a 4-8-4 class 25NC and the Class 26, are shown. Finally, we bring the viewer some action featuring modern traction on the line between Windhoek and Swakopmund during 2006 and 2007. Recent developments with the introduction of new diesels built in China are also briefly reviewed. Southern African Railway Roundabout 1991 (TWO DVD BOX) This programme features all manner of operations, but chiefly steam, over the whole of Southern Africa. There are condensed reviews of past tours, but also much by the way of general operations not yet shown on our other programmes. These include De Aar - Kimberley steam Specials, Witbank Colliery steam operations, Magaliesburg specials, Trans Karoo Pretoria steam specials, final Germiston regular steam turns, Randfontein Estates gold mine Garratts, Welkom gold mine steam duties, Bloemfontein - Kimberley specials and Sishen - Saldanha heavy haul ore line. Also featured is Transnet Museum's 1991 "Brush with Steam" rail tour. The first leg to the Eastern Transvaal is on the recently restored "Union Limited" 1930's Vintage Train. The second leg departed for Kimberley with a lengthy 18 coach train behind 2 locomotives. Enthusiasts were treated to 5 days intensive steam action on the famous Kimberley to De Aar line. Locomotives to be seen in the 1991 week, frequently operating in double headed combinations, are as follows: Classes 25NC 4-8-4; 26 4-8-4; 25 4-8-4; 15F 4-8-2; 15A 4-8-2; 15CA 4-8-2; 19D 4-8-2; 16E 4-6-2; 16D 4-6-2; 16DA 4-6-2; 6J 4-6-0; 23 4-8-2; 15E 4-8-2; 24 2-8-4. Other motive power includes classes 12AR 4-8-2; GMA 4-8-2+2-8-4 and various diesel and electric classes. Twin Steel Through Zimbabwe 1991 - 1992 (TWO DVD BOX) Twin Steel Through Zimbabwe features regular operations, steam tours and cross border Union Limited rail safari tours. In addition to the locomotives rostered on the tour trains, various lineside sequences of regular steam freight operations in Zimbabwe are shown. These include action at Bulawayo locomotive shed and station, where the Garratt type reigned supreme. NRZ locomotive classes shown include 7, 9B, 12, 14, 14A, 15A, 16A, 19, 20A. Guest appearances from SAR locomotives (on the South African routes) comprise classes 12AR, 15CA, 15E, 15F, 16DA, 19D, 24, 25NC, GF, GL and GMAM.

Cherriots of Fire
The train to the Ficksburg Cherry Festival was hauled by Reefsteamer's flagship, 25NC No. 3472 double headed with 15F No. 3016. The locos performed flawlessly and attracted the attention of many bystanders and motorists during the event. The chilly mornings made for a spectacular show of condensing steam, especially on the steep grade out of Bethlehem. By the time the sun was up, all the passengers marvelled at the spectacular scenery but unfortunately the ideal conditions were not to last. Within hours the heavens opened, turning the railway track and festival grounds into a mud pit. The next day Reefsteamers ran three trips to offer others at the festival the opportunity of experiencing steam travel from a bygone era. That evening the crews prepared the locomotives for the return trip, hoping to make an early start. The trains pulled out of Ficksburg just after 5AM. With the sun just piercing over the horizon and through the golden sandstone cliffs, one could not stop wondering if this was a paradise on earth.

On The Footplate
Before the planned departure, the fireman shovels coal into the firebox and checks the steam pressure. The driver tests the brakes for the whole of the train and also checks the motion parts. He stares out of the window waiting for the right away signal. He pulls the regulator handle towards him. As soon as the steam force of the engine kicks in and the train begins to move, he gently releases the handle for a slow, smooth acceleration. The engine gracefully leaves the station through the maze of points and crossings. At days end, the driver sends the whistle signal and moves the train over the ash pit for the fireman to clean the fire, take on water and a load of coal. The driver oils and greases the loco and makes sure that the train is properly serviced. On the footplate the driver is the boss, and the fireman is under his supervision. This is the closest you will ever get to driving, firing and servicing a real steam locomotive.

Reefsteamers Great Trek (TWO DVD BOX) When steam traction made way for other means of transportation, the parting was sweet sorrow for those who remember its finest moments. The steam locomotive was too grand a machine to disappear into oblivion. A wave of steam enthusiasm swept the world and South Africa was not an exception. Reefsteamers are a group of amateur volunteers that are dedicated steam preservationists. A team of enginemen reports on duty to light up the engines and make sure that the right pressure has been generated before the departure. The locomotive has been oiled, greased and polished. With the tender filled by coal and water, the locomotive is ready for the right away signal. A steam whistle breaks the silence. The train starts to move and veritable billows of smoke shoot rhythmically from the chimneys high into the sky. The golden fields speed by, bridges whip overhead and railway crossings sing their warning songs. The train is leaving Johannesburg for the wide-open spaces of Africa. Rail Victoria - The Changing 80s (TWO DVD BOX) The 1980s brought many changes to the rail system of Victoria. In conjunction with the name change of 1983, there was a change in corporate colours for locomotives and passenger rolling stock. Through running of locomotives from South Australia and New South Wales was implemented. The removal of the Guards Van from freight trains brought about a reduction in Train Crew manning from three to two. This practice was later extended to include all passenger services. The 1980s saw changes to the rail industry of Victoria, which could never be envisaged by the forefathers of years past. This 2 disc set covers only part of those turbulent years. Locomotives in the Blue & Gold mix with colour schemes of V/Line, South Australia and New South Wales, it is all here! Truly a trip down memory lane. Digitally remastered and reedited for DVD.

Song of the Rails

Sandstone Narrow Gauge Railway is South Africa newest and boldest steam preservation project, you will be amazed! Over the past years, narrow gauge railway preservation in South Africa has been gaining new ground: fourteen kilometers of two-foot gauge track on one of the countrys biggest and most aesthetic commercial farms - Sandstone Estates. With the Great Maluti Mountains presiding, and their rugged foothills giving narrow gauge engineering the topography it likes best, the Sandstone Narrow Gauge Railway is Africas newest and boldest steam preservation project. In this video, we explore the history of the railway and its stable of locomotives including Garratts; we join the Sandstone drive to locate and give sanctuary to precious railway relics; and we witness the transformation from scrap metal into gleaming, fully restored engines hauling payloads on a working commercial farm. With its combination of spectacular mountain backdrop, pristine rural environment and brilliantly clear skies, the Eastern Free State is a prime photographic destination. This video shows steam at its exuberant best, and attempts to explain why people feel they way they do about it. Experience the Song of the Rails.
